What do i put between my 3wood and 4iron?

So ive been using Garmin tags with my Approach s60 for most of the season, and i have the following numbers based on the results. Anyone any suggestions what they would change about the bag? I dont use the 3hybrid as i truly dislike it, hence the low numbers. Its where i am most interested in a change. So, based off my numbers what would you put in the gap between 3 wood and 4iron? Any other suggestions?

If these are total distances rather than carry, then I would suggest doing a gapping session on a launch monitor. IMO it is more important, and will give you a better idea on your gapping and what may fit in the spot between 3 wood & 4 iron.

If you don't like the 3 hybrid, then I would likely suggest a 5 wood. In my case, I have a very shallow 5 wood that is outstanding off the deck, but I can use it off the tee just teed up very low. You could go 5 wood, 7 wood, Heavenwood, driving iron. Not sure what else. At that point, it is pretty personal with what works for your game.

I would purchase both a FW and a driving iron to fill the gap. FW for calm days and DI for windy days.

You have inconsistent gapping across your entire set......from LW to driver (skipping over hybrid), this is what your gaps look like (in yards): 49, 17, 10, 7, 8, 7, 14, 21, 23, 28, 17. It seems strange that there is a 44 yard gap between your 6-iron and your 4-iron, yet only a 15 yard gap between your PW and 8-iron. I'd work to get those a bit more consistent, and then I would find what works between your 4-iron and your 3W.

I agree with the other posters that 5W seems like a good solution. Or try another hybrid in the 19-21* range to see if you can find one you like. It sounds to me like you may need to try more of them; I wasn't a hybrid fan at all until I found a Tour Edge Exotics one that I liked (still have it but not in bag currently), and the Titleist 816 kicked it out as I absolutely love that one. I just bought an 818 in a different loft just to have options.

Β

Also keep in mind that a hybrid might be more usable for certain shots, so even if you hit it very close to the same distance as one of the adjacent clubs (3W or 4i), it can still be a good tool.

I think you might just want to find a hybrid that fits better and averages 235.

Β

I'm trying to figure the same thing out. I have a 3 wood that goes like 250-260 and a 4 iron that goes 215. Currently i have a 5 wood that goes 240-250 which is a pretty big gap from the 4iron. I think a hybrid that goes 230 might be a better fit for me. search for 'trackman pga tour averages' which lists pga tour average distances / club (I can't post links yet) which might be useful to you thinking about this.

I would add it depends on the type of courses you play and the type of shots you would be hitting with the club in question. If you want something that is going to give you higher flight then look for another hybrid. If you are looking for something with a lower flight then 5w would probably be the best fit.

Given the limitation of 14 clubs, everyone is going to have a gap somewhere in their bag. As individual players, we make a choice over whether we want that gap at the top of the bag, or the bottom - typically. I suppose it would be possible to place the gap in the middle of the bag, if you really wanted to.

Β

Regardless of where in the bag that gap shows up, it needs to be filled with a versatile club, something that provides the full swing distance you need, but you can also take some off of when required. Some people find they are more comfortable doing that with wedges, others with hybrids or FWs.

Β

Additionally, the placement of the gap, and the club that is used to fill it might differ depending upon course, weather, or day to day confidence. Me personally, I switch between a 5w (18 degree) and a 3h (21 degree) to fill the 3w to 4i gap. Longer courses, I take the 5w, shorter the 3h (generally).

Β

Having said all of that, and like one of the above posters, I seriously question the distance data that you have supplied. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense. A 4i that averages 220 and a 3h that averages 207? What is going on there? Seems like an easy initial solution would be to find a 3h that you can hit as well as the other clubs in your bag.

The gapping looks a little odd to me. From what's posted, it appears that your 9i and PW are pretty dang close in yardages. As to what club to fill the role, 5 wood that's properly fitted to your gapping, or a different hybrid with between 19 and 20 degrees of loft that you're more confident with.

5W or 7W... or, try for a different hybrid. A Tight Lies hybrid is low profile, and probably gives you way more launch than you need with your clubhead speed.

Β

Likewise, as others have said, do something about the odd yardage gaps within your irons.

Hi all, thanks for all the comments. I do need to go do another gapping session and check the lofts of my irons, but being cast they shouldnt be bent. I think that at present the odd gaps are more to do with how and when i hit certain clubs. 90% of my rounds tracked are on the same course, where certain fairways/approaches i use the same clubs all the time, but elevations and drops are skewing my averages. One hole which is a 45 degree dogleg, i hit my 4iron every time, it catches the perfect downslope and on that hole i probably average 240-250 with that, bringing my overall average up. My 6 and 7 never get used off the tee so maybe would be a little longer average if they were. These tags are certainly not an exact science.

Β

Onto the hybrid, the numbers are so low, because i never hit it, cannot stand it, hence why i was asking the question on peoples preferences. I have some proshop credit from a recent win, so will go try the various options in the Ping range, that is all they custom fit, and see what gives me what i need, and then maybe go try some other options elsewhere. Im certainly not writing off another hybrid, just writing off mine.

Β

The Ping Crossover looks interesting, anyone have any experience with those?

As someone above mentioned, the one i have is A) old, B) super low profile, it was also an impulse off the shelf buy, the only club in my bag not fitted, so no surprises it sucks. Just not got round to looking at it until now, as i am 'relatively' happy with the rest of my bag. Will go hit all manner of options and see what takes my fancy.

I was playing a long par 3 the other day and saw a guys Ping crossover head launch into the water. Heard great things about the iron but glad I stuck with my Mizuno mp18 fli hi 2 iron. Use to have the 3 iron as well but preferred the 3 iron in my blade set. The mizuno fli hi driving irons launch very well and is my fairway finder. Am able to get enough carry when I have to, and always have that low punch shot stinger when I need to find the fairway. With my hybrid I tend to overdraw and mishits are hard to recover from. I would def try the driving iron route. A club fitter by me told me the driving iron was β€œarchaic” and that he doesn’t see why anyone would use one. I couldn’t disagree more, my worst miss is a 200 yard skull shot. My worst miss with a hybrid is OB. Give me that driving iron any day.
