Tell Me About Your i210 irons...

BCULAW

Recommended Posts

I had a UW with my i200 and at the time my GW was really only a full swing club for me and I loved it. Once I started flighting my wedges nearly 100% of the time I preferred a specialty wedge. As far as set wedges go, it’s one of the best.

I switched to the i210 gap wedge. I only use a gap wedge for full swings so it made sense blending into the irons. I will say that it spins a ton. Definitely more than the other gap wedge I was using. I also initially went with an i500 3 iron more to use as a driving iron than for gapping. I've since sold it but I think the i500 4 iron would gap nicely.

Dumb question.... why not the i210 3 iron?

210s are the best all around iron I have ever hit. From long irons to short irons, they are work so well. I tried so many of the player distance irons this past year including the 785s and just none come close for me. After ho'ing 919s, 785s, i500s, HM Pros, etc, I finally broke down and went to a complete iron fitting including gapping with my pro that had Mizuno, Titleist, Callaway, TM and Ping carts at his disposal. When I hit all the different irons outdoors on grass using Flightscope, there were +'s and -'s to each but nothing gave me the optimal spin, launch and shot groupings of the i210s. I so wanted to be hitting a forged club but the Mizuno got cut fairly quickly into the session due to turf interaction and I wasn't looking for a swing overhaul to make them as playable. I thought the Pings would be shorter as they spun more and lofts were weaker but as I begun to get the confidence, they were as long as any in their category. Once I got them from Ping after about 10 days we went though and gapped each club. I hit a minimum of 10 balls with each on Flightscope with the monitor turned off so I couldn't see distances and adjust my swing. I was amazed at the results. I had 10-11 yards gap between every club and know my exact averages. The gapping is something everyone should pay to have done for sure. Can't recommend the i210s enough and if the Ping sole works for you, there is nothing better.

Not opposed to it, but think the i500 might provide a little easier distance at the top end of the bag. I carry my 4 iron about 210, but have a couple of par 3s on my home course that can tip out around 230. Ideal would be a 3 iron I could stretch to those, as I hate hybrids for the most part. I'm thinking the hot face i500 might get there.

Ever heard of Ping staffers?

Well I am the opposite of that.

Seriously though I keep on chasing the feeling that I have in/get from my i200s (Project X 6.0 Rifle), but I haven't yet found it with any of the three different shaft set i210s.

Nippon N.S. Pro Modus3 Tour 120 X, Project X Rifle 6.0 hard-stepped once, and True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue X100. About to list the lattermost set and order another set of i210s with regular Project X Rifle 6.0s at D1 and they will then be identical to the i200s spec-wise.

Ah, that makes sense.

Gotta love the 230 yd par 3. The course here in the Twin Cities that used to hold the Senior tour event has a par 3 on one of its nines that can go to 240. Playing it upwind could provide entertainment...

I actually had a hole at my old home course in Lutz, Florida that was 131 from the blue tees, but tipped out at 260 to the middle from the back. Tee shot from the tips required every bit of a 240 yard carry over water through a chute in the trees off the tee box. Hit driver into it MANY times. You had to drive the cart over a bridge spanning swamp land to get from the back to the middle tees. Insane hole design that made absolutely NO sense!!!

That's nuts.

Imagine that hole with something like the sticks in my Sig. LOL

@BCULAW I spent some time in that area and did some work for TPC Tampa. Such a great course and practice facility. Really enjoyed my time in that area.

Will those two irons ever feel alike? I owned the i200s, was fitted to them (green dot, plus 1/2 inch, power specs) and really liked the feel of them. I have only hit the 210, but I know Ping touted an even thinner face and more elastomer. Also has a higher COG. I was surprised that there was a noticeable difference in feel. The 210 is softer but I didn’t immediately like it more than the 200. If I played them I am sure I would like it, but at the time it was more that the numbers were pretty similar so no reason to jump.

Sure was! I used the be the first player out (as a single) every Saturday before the first tee time. I called it My "therapy.". Bet I played close to 500 rounds out there. I used to live in the neighborhood there, but even kept going after I moved to South Tampa. Fun little track, and the staff treated me like a VIP. I still try to play it every time I'm in town.

@BCULAW Never had the chance to play HH. I helped TPC relaunch their new clubhouse restaurant. Lived in the area for about 4 months during that time. Was able to hit balls and play every day while there. Love that place!

I had them for a bit last year. Very similar situation. Hit them at the store and they felt great. I was hitting them better than my MP18 SC's at the time so I went ahead and found a set with DG120 S300's. Once I took them outside, I did not get along with how they interacted with the turf and the feel was not there for me. Mostly because I came from a Mizuno iron before. They are great irons in terms of forgiveness and absolutely loved the look behind the ball but they only lasted about half a season before I went back to mizunos.
