Paging brew4eagle.....

I noticed you posted a few items on the BST. What's the latest setup now?

Your input has been awesome on this thread and I'd be interested to see what you're carrying these days and why?

Currently have a 2020 Sun Mtn 2.5+ plain black (no logos) with a black EZ-Fit strap and a black single strap that can be swapped out.  The single strap is on bst with no takers.

I also have a 2020 Hoofer Lite that is on bst only because I have this weird obsession with not having extra stuff, some sort of minimalist ocd going on.  I found the 2.5+ for a great price and ordered the EZ-Fit, so one of the bags had to be sold in my mind, hahaha.

Both are great bags, and each has their pros/cons as I went through earlier in the thread.  Here's the black logoless 2.5+ with the EZ-Fit on it...

Thanks for the update, I get the minimalist thing.

Appreciate all of your feedback and insights to carry bags. Like most of us I'm always trying to find the perfect one. Recently found a new 2019 2.5+ and as you have said its a good one!

Yes, 2019 2.5+ is my favorite version.  2020 has one improvement (non-angled middle dividers) but 2019 looks better to me

I carried my 2.5+ last weekend with the EZ Fit swap, and as much a I like the EZ Fit (used it on many Titleist and SM bags), I put the X Straps back on and have redoubled my efforts to get the straps right.  The universal EZ Fit straps "twists" too easy and I have to focus just a bit more than I should to put it on.  The universal EZ Fit conversion is wildly comfortable though.

I currently have a Titleist Players 4 bag, and my only complaint about the bag is the legs that don't retract all the way.  I've had the Ogio Fuse (original iteration) and didn't like that they only had 1 big pocket.  They fixed that with the next generation.  I've also used the Mizuno 4 way stand bag, and that one was fine as well.  I think the Fuse was my favorite out the 3, but I'm fine with the Titleist for now.  Might end up in a Sun Mountain 3.5 at some point.

I think  it would be easier to perform open heart surgery for me than find a good walking setup for myself.  I just keep changing my mind.  In general I just love carrying and the SM 2.5 is perfect.  However when I play with my push cart friends I just can't help but feel that is a more leisurely way of playing golf.   I just dropped 200+ on the 2021 SM 2.5 and really want a push cart to fit flawlessly.  I'm not needing the storage space and won't be bringing the kitchen sink just because I am using the cart.

I keep pushing as I bring the kitchen sink. LOL Especially when golfing with my wife. Sort of like going on vacation. I use a cheap two wheel cart. I do take the wet weather/late year-early season stuff out of the bag in the summer but in my mountainous area, weather change can be brutal.

All,

Tried out a SM 2.5+ this weekend (loaded it up with my gear, including a 9 balls and a water ball) and walked around the store a little.  Incredibly light, but it had  two draw backs:

1) I couldn't get the straps to feel like the balance was right (others have talked about a process to get this right, so I'm not too concerned there)

2) the back pad didn't seem to be hitting me right ... or maybe the pad is just so minimal, but the bag felt uncomfortable resting against my back.

Is #2 above just the 'facts of life' with an ultra-light bag?  Would the 3.5 have a more comfortable back pad ... or possibly was the uncomfortable feeling related to the imperfect balance/set-up of the straps?

Would love to hear any input specific to the feeling/comfort of the bag on your back.  That was the only thing keeping me from walking out with the 2.5+.

Thanks WRXers.

When I get the Sun Mtn bags balanced for me, I also find that the back pad doesn't quite rest where I think it should.  I only found it to be somewhat of an issue on the 4.5LS as the plastic from the top of the bag sort of dug into my side.

The straps on the 2.5+ seem to be a bit picky to get right.  The first few times I carried it I also couldn't get it "quite right".  I ordered the EZ Fit upgrade from SM and while super comfy, the strap twist drove me nuts.  I added a couple of "webbing slide triglides" minimize the "sliding" of the two straps to the original straps.  For me it made a HUGE difference on how the straps fit.

That's just the way I cracked the nut.  I know others had success getting the straps adjusted correctly, but for me that was how I was able to get them very comfortable.

That’s why i don’t like the X fit straps.  They slide around as far as the load goes.  The Ez for straps stay put as far as a consistent load.  If you find the right spot, it stays there.  With the x strap the puck slides around and messes with consistency.   I don’t like that.

@Hougz79, do you have any pics of how you rigged the straps?

@brew4eagle, when you "plastic from the top of the bag" do you mean the opening at the top when the bag is standing up or do you mean the 'top' when the bag is laying horizontal across your back?  I think I was feeling something in the middle of the bag (longways) when carrying the bag ... so I guess that would be the "top".  Hearing that its an issue with the 4.5 makes me think the 3.5 would also have the same problem?

Been undecided all year on whether to get a stand bag to use in the wet instead of the titleist premium carry bag. Carbon bag came up in colour I didn’t like, but too good a deal to leave it. Delighted with it, slightly heavier but minimally, slightly better storage. Stand and excellent rain cover make all the difference, in the heavy damp ground we currently have.

Thanks for posting these pics, especially with the rain hood.  I've had good success with several Titleist bags and currently use the Players 4.  Been pondering the Carbon, and the rain hood just might seal the deal.

Got a 2.5+ for Xmas based on this thread (and others over the past few years).  It’s replacing a 10-year old 3.5 that’s served me well.  Was planning to replace the x straps on the 2.5+ right away but they seem OK having just loaded the new bag.

Overall, while the fabric feels a bit thin, I like the combo of size and weight.   I think it’s a keeper and looking forward to using it.

The flap in the photo is Velcro and let’s you tidy it up a bit, or you can kid of fold back and overhang a bit to tidy it up   , great coverage.

What an insanely comprehensive overview of stand bags we have here.  Had to join up and contribute as I am about to order the latest iteration of the Mizuno K1-LO bag as it seems to check the important boxes for me which is external stand so the interior does not fold and pinch the end of the grips leading to difficulty removing clubs and decent pocket locations including the small one for the RF which is a must.

I currently use a Titliest 14 way Stadry stand bag which has been pretty good but going to get an extra bag for the warmer months when less weight is good and the rain protection is not needed.  The Titliest has been good but certainly has some failings.  The stand is internal, so the base can pinch the grips creating issues with club extraction.  Which is a shame as I really like the 14 way top divider but it is compromised with the stupid stand mechanism.  The straps are comfy and the bag balances perfectly when carried but the lower strap frequently twists which is annoying.  I have never had this on previous bags by Mizuno, Taylormade or Ping.

And of course, there should be a place reserved in hell for the moron who designed the drinks pocket.  Why does it have to be at right angles to how the bag is carried and why put a magnet in there so it always closes flush as soon as you take a bottle out.  All these issues are easily overcome but still, for £200, it is annoying.

It is very waterproof though and happily means it takes far longer for grips to get wet in inclement weather, something that is frequent here in the UK.

Cannot fault any other part of it.  It is still in really good condition despite having played around 150 rounds the previous calendar year.  No broken zips or major tears or rips.  Overall good quality materials.

I bought it after sending back a Big Max Aqua bag.  It was awful quality and although considerably cheaper, was terribly made, balanced horribly when carried and the top was too small.  It is rare for me to return anything but I took it out the box, had a look and play for about 10 minutes and immediately decided to send it back and pay more for the Titliest.

Anyway, will report back when the latest Mizuno bag arrives to see what it is made of.

  • 3 weeks later...

It has been a coupla three weeks since I took delivery of the Mizuno KILO bag.  I will put a picture below of the variant I have as I think there were earlier ones.

I play about 4-5times a week, so this has been out approx 10 times now and I can give a decent overview on all aspects apart from longevity of materials and how it will wear over time.  I do play around 200 times a year and carry all year round, so I expect my bags to last at least a year but preferably 3.

This bag has replaced a Titliest Stadry 14 stand bag which I will still use when playing in wet conditions.

First up, it is light.  Very light.  I put all the stuff from old bag into new bag.  14 clubs, 6 balls, tees, pitchmark repairer, water bottle, RF etc.  Put it on my back and was astounded at the difference a couple of pounds can make.  The Titliest bag is not what I would call heavy but the construction is good and rain defeating components naturally weigh more and there is no effort to reduce weight as such.  It is hugely noticeable and more so when you have carried your stuff for 18 holes.  The main aim in bag replacement was to reduce fatigue.  100% win.  The bag is very very light.

Straps.  Big win.  Comfy, very padded and most importantly, the way they are designed with plastic hooks attaching to the centre patch, means they do not want to permanently twist like they do with the Titliest.  You still get the odd twist but that is more slack user error and the design means when you take it off, the straps are naturally encouraged to go back the way they should.  Much better design than the Titliest.

Top dividers and stand system.  I have gone from 14 way top and full length dividers which I really liked but there was an issue with the Titliest in that the stand system was internal with the bottom of the base flexing to enable the legs to pop out.  All fine but when the base flexes, the internal surface area where the grips sit reduces and causes grips to be squeezed together.  That results in difficult in getting the odd club out here and there and the same issue when replacing a club.  It was never a huge issue for me but if you play lots of golf, it does actually cause more wear to your grips and is a bit of a PITA.  Mizuno stand system is external, so the base area interally stays constant.  Grips do not get stuck and the 4 way top allows easy club removal and when you put a club back in.  They get a bit mixed up but no biggie and it's been an easy adjustment not knowing exactly where each club.  On balance, I think I prefer the 4 way top.  More so with an external stand system.  Another thinkg to note on the stand system is the positive and instant pop out nature of the legs.  They fly out on the Mizuno without catching your leg as you put the bag down.  Grab handle is in the right place as all bags are.  Cannot fault that part of it.

Pockets - It is a minimalist bag which is fine for me.  In the UK, we have pretty crappy weather from time to time.  Below freezing in winter and a good amount of rain at various points through the year.  I personally do not take waterproofs nor do I use pockets in winter for extra layers.  I don't feel the cold and in the rain, I dislike waterproof.  I prefer to embrace it, get wet and retain full movement in my clothes.  If on the other hand you want lots of space to carry a variet of clothing or kit, this bag is not for you as the pockets are quite tight.  You would get a waterproof jacket in and a beanie hat and a couple of spare gloves but not much more.

Ball pocket is ace.  Never seen one with a vertical zipper and thought at first it would not work but it does and access is much easier when the bag is on your back.  The small little pocket above it has always been the most important for me, as this is where i put my range finder.  It has to take an RF without it being in a stupid case.  It also has to retain the RF with the zipper open all the time so I can get immediate rapid access.  It does.  Just like the Titliest.  Perfect.

Bottle holder.  It is a stretchy mesh type construction and does its job but I would be concerned about how long it will last as it seems almost too minimalistic.  We shall see but it works in terms of ease of access and positioning.

Valuables pouch is what it is.  In the normal place.  You can easily get your keys and wallet and phone in there.  Fine.

Quality of zips.  Definitely not as good as the Titliest.  Everywhere they can save weight they have and it shows with things like the zippers.  They work fine.  No sign of any failure but they do not look strong.

Rain hood.  Pretty crap to be honest.  Unless the bag is waterproof, in my experience rain hoods are natty and as useful as a chocolate teapot.  It has been put in a cupboard and will never see the light of day.

Quality of materials.  The material is thin.  All materials.  The outer membrane, the materials on the handles and grab handles.  Around the top cuff.  Everywhere is minimalistic in order to save weight.  It seems strong enough and does what it needs to do but I would say my only concern with this bag will be the longevity of the materials used.  My local course has gorse, woods, shrubs etc and not just some standard long grass.  The rough in the UK is proper rough and just 15yds from each side of fairway you can often be properly off piste.  Walking through some vegetation would potentially be a concern with this bag due to the nature of the materials used.  An occupational hazard of stripping as much weight as poss I guess.  When I took it out the box, I thought at first they had sent the wrong bag as it looked far less substantial than what you see in the marketing pics.

All in all, I really really like this bag.  The dimensions are much smaller than my previous bag and when you factor in the significant weight reduction and how that positively impacts the overall carrying experience, it is difficult to be too judgemental on the weaker looking materials.  You cannot have one without the other basically.

So time will tell in terms of if it can do 200 rounds this year but overall, it is a good buy.  Easy to carry, easy to use, easy to select clubs, easy to access and replace range finder and the straps don't twist.  If it does over a year, I would probably replace it with the same thing unless some obviously better alternative was available.

@Cottis Thanks for the detailed review.  I've been lurking on this thread and thinking hard about a new bag.  After a in-store session of loading up several different bags the K1-LO emerged as the winner.  Agree that the straps are great and the feel on the back is fantastic.  Feather light with 14 clubs and 12 balls.  I tried SM 2.5+ and 3.5LS and neither felt good on my back.  They were light, but the carry just felt uncomfortable, particularly where the bag contacts my back.  It felt like there was no padding there.  The Hoofer Lite was second place, so I've had in mind probably go back in to a deeper dive on just the Hoofer Lite and K1-LO.

Any other K1-LO users out there?  Appreciate any more feedback, particularly on longevity.  I wish they had a few more colorways.

I got the sand camo colourway.  I would say it looks marginally better in the marketing gumph but not much in it.

Looking into getting a new bag after a few zippers on my older Ogio ripped.  I walk most of my rounds mostly carrying and occasionally using a pushcart if my back is acting up.  Truly only ride when my father is in town, so occasionally will have the need to stick the bag on the back of a cart.  Here are my current thoughts:

  • SM 2.5+: Little concerned reading about the strap issues above and uncomfortable back position.  I've been prone to some lower back pain.
  • Mizuno K1-LO
  • Titleist Carbon

I've read some excellent reviews of all of these above, but I'm leaning towards the Carbon soley because we have a few in the pro shop at the club.  Any thoughts on the 2022 models or if I'm missing another lightweight bag to consider?  Do any of these not translate well into push or ride carts?

  • SM 2.5+: Little concerned reading about the strap issues above and uncomfortable back position.  I've been prone to some lower back pain.
  • Mizuno K1-LO
  • Titleist Carbon

I've read some excellent reviews of all of these above, but I'm leaning towards the Carbon soley because we have a few in the pro shop at the club.  Any thoughts on the 2022 models or if I'm missing another lightweight bag to consider?  Do any of these not translate well into push or ride carts?

I've tried them all and Hoofer Lite was the winner

I can give an update on the Mizuno KILO.  7 months use, about 5 times a week.  I carry 100% of the time, playing a mix of 10 and 18 holes (10 finishes at the clubhouse at my club, so members tend to play 10 or 18)

I imagine this now has close to 150 rounds on it and my initial concerns about the flimsy nature of weight saving materials and potentially moody zips have been unfounded.  The bag is still in fine fettle and has no obvious damage apart from my mate stupidly shut one of the carbon legs in the boot (trunk) when putting it away and it sheared in half cleanly.  I installed a piece of pine dowl, epoxyed it together and duck taped the slight carbon fibres sticking out.  It is fine.

Apart from that, it just has usual wear marks on the cuff associated with removing and replacing clubs somewhere in the region of 10,000 times.  I have noticed some slight wear on my grips towards the butt end where they are slightly scooched together in such a small space at the bottom of the bag but not as much as on bags that have internal stand mechanisms that squeeze the grips together when in operation.

The other thing I am surprised at is that the bottle holder is still working.  It just seemed so flimsy and crap but it is still fine and I take a fairly wide bottle with me on every single round and remove and replace it multiple times.  The elastic is still strong and no rips or faults.  That has surprised me.

All in all, I still cannot fault it.  The strap system is hands down the best I have used.  No twist and still nice and puffy and comfy padding wise.  Great little bag.  Emphasis on great and little.  I will replace like for like when it does break.
