Las Vegas Golf Scene?

Recommended Posts

Two part query. I'm strongly considering retiring from the Chicago area to Vegas in a year or two and wondering what the overall golf scene is like. I've spent some time out there for business but have only ever played TPC LV. At this early stage, we're looking at Summerlin and Henderson.

Part 1: How's the public golf scene in each of those areas? I really enjoy playing different courses, and we're spoiled more than 200 tracks in the Chicago area. Although I don't mind driving 30+ minutes to play (I do that often here around Chicago), I'd like to know the quality of public courses within 10-15 minutes of each of the two areas.

Part 2: How's the private club situation between the two areas? As much as I enjoy the variety of playing different courses, I'm considering finally joining a club when I retire to help with building a new social circle and to have some regular games set up. If I go this route, I'd love to find a club that's got a great track that won't get boring.

We do plan on spending time scouting the Vegas area in advance (including living there for a couple weeks at a time during both summer and winter), but I'd love some input from locals now.

Thanks!

The public golf scene is pretty great IMO as someone who moved from LA. Tons of public golf and most of it is pretty affordable at the local rate. In the Henderson area you have Revere (B+), Desert Willow (C+), Legacy (B-), Rio Secco (A+), Wildhorse (C) etc. Summerlin gives you a lot more options in terms of public golf and also keep in mind its 5-10 degrees cooler than Henderson during the Summer: Bears Best (A+), Angel Park (B+), Arroyo (B), Rhodes Ranch (B-), Eagle Crest/Highland Falls (C+), etc. But also keep in mind that the drive from Henderson to Summerlin is pretty quick.

In terms of private, there are great options too. In Henderson, you have Dragonridge and Anthem. In the Summerlin direction, you have Red Rock, TPC, Spanish Trail etc. IMO, Dragonridge is the best of the bunch and seriously underrated. Beautiful course, challenging layout, amazing facilities, etc. TPC is really good too though.

Hope that helps a bit!

I will say probably 10 or more really good public courses, another dozen or more that are worth playing. some very high end private courses and some solid middle level private courses.    Vegas is a solid golf destination and you have another 5 good courses in Mesquite (50) minutes away and another 5 or so in St George (1.5 hours away)

Revisiting this thread since we recently closed on our house out in Vegas. Ended up in Summerlin, though the drive to Henderson and other areas isn't bad at all by Chicago traffic standards.

In addition to wanting to sample all of the public golf in the area, I'm really leaning towards pursuing a private club. It does suck that I landed 20+ minutes from the likes of DragonRidge, and Southern Highlands, but I will be checking out Red Rock CC.

I look forward to scouting some of the courses mentioned on this site (thanks again for the replies) and as well as running into some of the WRXers out there.

Looking forward to playing some of the courses mentioned in this thread.  We will be moving to Vegas here in the next month or two. Pretty much looking in the same areas as the OP mentioned Henderson or Summerlin.

I was in the same boat as you and moved here 2 years ago and wanted to join a club but I'm still having fun playing all the great courses around the vegas area.  I like angel park but I guess I've been lucky and have gotten paired up with some decent players and have had some of my quickest rounds there, but the quality on all the courses changes constantly so I'm always moving around from course to course and I haven't joined a course yet (maybe soon).  I've been lucky enough to play Shadow Creek a lot lately so I'm enjoying their quick greens!

I'm not a fan of Red Rock, but Bears best is great (not sure of the current conditions though)

Have fun!

@Haloha - Excellent.  Well once me and the family get out there maybe we can get together and play some golf!  I lived out there from 96-00, and played of few of the courses mentioned, however, I don't recall which ones.  😞 Lucky you in getting to play Shadow Creek.  I'm envious already.  Who do you think has the best short game practice area out there?

Coming to Vegas from Dallas 8/20-21. Playing as a single so luck of the draw who im paired with, I play to a 4 so hopefully the guys will want to play from 6600+.

I was going to play twice in one day at Paiute, definitely Wolf and then do people like Sun or Snow better? From what I read I was leaning Sun but have never played at the resort. The other day I was going to do one round and from reading here it seems like Rio Secco, TPC Vegas, Bears Best. I ruled out cascata due to price. To me the condition of the course is priority, so would appreciate any comments on that. As an aside, is bali hai any good? Thanks.

DeeBee, What public courses do you like best? Visiting in September, getting ready to make tee times. Looking for good conditions at reasonable green fees.

Re: Angel Park.

I play in a 4 day tournament every summer in Vegas. We play on some nice courses in the rotation - Dragon Ridge, Anthem, Southern Highlands, both TPC courses, Reflection Bay. We get there the day before and play Angel Park as a warm up. We play the course that is next to the Suncoast Hotel where we stay. It’s inexpensive and not a bad course. We play in July/August so it’s never busy though the driving range is a little sketchy.

The course itself has always been in good shape. Certainly not in the same league as the other courses we play there but nice enough that we play it every year.

Playing Paiute this week, they're in great shape. Wolf and Sun mountain are in a little better shape then Snow Mountain. Overall, they're in really good shape all the time and worth playing when visiting Vegas.

Jumping in on this as we will be in Vegas next weekend and a buddy and I are looking to play a round of golf. I love Wolf Creek, just might be a little far away since we will be leaving our wives at the pool - haha.

Similar to some of the comments above, condition is the priority - willing to pay for the experience. I hear Paiute Wolf is awesome, any other suggestions for this time of year?

Thanks!

Read the Google reviews, they've been taking a beating lately. Played Paiute Wolf & Sun Mountain the last 2 days. Wolf was in great shape. Sun is almost fully recovered from having annual maintenance on their fairways, but greens are great. Just some scrape spots which should be healed within a couple weeks. Not going to play Snow this time, but it looks in same shape as Sun.

Meant to follow up on this but Summer got in the way. Did you ever make your move to Vegas? We still haven't fully moved yet but will in the next 2-3 months. I'll be looking for some golfing buddies soon...

@DeeBee30 - Yes, arrived on 08/06, but won't have my clubs for a few weeks.  We are in a rental at the moment until we close on our house.  We ended up settling in the Henderson area.

Figured I'd ping this group. Will be in Vegas next week and trying to play Wednesday with a colleague. I know this is a shoulder month for golf in the area with overseeding, but wanted to see what you guys would pick between the following, price vs. condition wise. (if it's not listed, there's no tee times available in AM). Thanks

Angel Park - Mountain ($80-$103)

Angel Park - Palm ($112)

Reflection Bay ($65)

Royal Links ($134)

Siena ($117-$153)

Arroyo ($142-$186)

Paiute - Snow ($159)

Boulder Creek ($59)

Bear's Best ($269 haha)

Debated whether to keep this thread going or start a new one...thought I'd keep it here to preserve the great comments from everyone.

We finally made our move from Chicagoland to Vegas a couple of weeks ago and I'm anxious to sample many of the area courses beyond the 3 I've previously played. We landed in Summerlin, so most of the courses I'm eyeballing to get out on are west-ish. Unfortunately, it took me until yesterday to break out the sticks, and that was just at the Highland Falls range/short game area. It's looking like that may become my home practice area unless I join a club next year.

Anyway - which courses in/around LV tend to hold up better (ie. condition) during the Fall and Winter months? I usually tamp down my expectations over the next few months, but that's based on Midwest courses.

Right now, Boulder Creek, Coyote Springs, Pahrump, and Paiute are all in fantastic shape. Primm Desert is a lil rough, but Lakes looked good and I'll be playing Sunday there to check. Legacy had some long greens, but the course itself was decent. Chimera is usually in really good shape, but they got hit with something over the summer and I think they gave up until overseed, but I haven't been out to try cuz I'm scared lol. I played Angel Park Palm right after overseed and it was pretty good, I'm sure it's cleaned up some since then and is back to full speed. I played Revere Lexington Sunday, again it's fresh out of overseed so it's still healing, but conditions look to be on the up and up. I haven't played Rhodes in about a month, but it was in pretty nice shape already. And finally, Bali Hai has cleaned up after a long run of fighting, it should be in pretty good shape as of now. Don't pay full price tho, they always have local specials, you just have to call.

Being a local you may not know, but any courses offer specials that include tourists? We'll be there early November and because it's two of us the only way we can afford to play much is using Golfnow.

Wouldn't even mind playing some lesser courses (dumps) to even out the costs
