I was glad to find this thread because I'm considering ditching my 3W -- would love some input on what I'm thinking about.

So right now, here are my distances at the long end of my bag:

10.5* Driver: 255 yards

15* 3W: Probably topped, might roll 80 yards if it's dry and I'm lucky

18* 3H: 215 yards

22* 4H: 200 yards

25* 5I: 185 yards

I'm pleased with everything but, obviously, the 3W. I'm a high handicapper (it's coming down fast though!) with a relatively steep swing, and find hybrids are just a lot easier for me to hit. I also live in the Chicago area and, as the Windy City nickname might suggest, play on some really windy days ... so I've been thinking about trying to get a driving iron into the bag for the low trajectory. Carried a 3 iron a long time ago and it was money off the tee.

What I'm thinking is ... try a Callaway Super Hybrid, lofted down to 16 degrees in the draw setting, in place of that 3W. (Actually already went ahead and ordered the Super Hybrid off Callaway Preowned, because they only had one that met my spec at a sale price. I can always return it.) Then drop my 18 degree hybrid in favor of a 19ish degree driving iron.

My hesitation is losing that 18 degree hybrid. I hit it well and depend on it a lot right now as my second-longest club, since I'm so bad with the 3W that I never even try anymore. Having my 3H and the Super Hybrid in the bag at the same time probably wouldn't make sense, and I'd really like to have the low trajectory of a driving iron in my bag. Just hard to give up a club that's working well for me right now.

Makes sense to me. I imagine that 16h is going to fly much more than 2º differently. Do a straight swap, and I bet you'll find you keep them both.

You might also adjust them, assuming you can. Mine are labeled 17 and 19, but I play them 15.5 and 20. They fly literally about 6º different; my 15 goes out about 12-13 degrees when struck well, and the 20 goes about 18-19º.

As you can, you can return it. I remember those days...

Thanks, this is a good point -- I'm just going to give things a try with both of them for a bit and see how it goes. Since I'm not really looking to change the makeup of my bag dramatically by, like, adding a wedge or something, I don't think there's any real downside for now, even if there doesn't end up being a ton of difference between them.

I can't hit woods accurately or consistently. R&R is missing.

I hit 1-iron of the tee better then 3-wood and use C300 2H of the fairway. Look i am not a pro but i want to hit my shots straight.. control my despersion.. some might hit 3w better then 7i ... but thats just not me. Something about the mass of 3-wood plays trick on my mind.

Cheers... play your own game!

Haven’t tried it in practice yet, but my plan moving forward is: regular driver, short 12 degree driver, 19 hybrid.

i simply don’t have much use for a three wood. It’s basically a short driver for me already, so why not just make it a driver?

250 in to a par five is rare for me, and trying to hit my home courses par fives from 250 is a bad idea...

I would love to carry a fairway wood to help me reach long par 5s but it just hasn’t worked out for me. I carry driver then u510 2 iron. I rarely need a fairway wood and when I do I usually end up with a penalty or just not hitting a good shot. My misses with the 2 iron keep me in play I just don’t get quite the distance out of the fairway I need. Anyone else have this problem and if so what do you do?

I have always been a big proponent of 4 woods...as 3w's are great off the tee but hard to hit off the deck and 5w's are the opposite...but since I got the tsi2 4 hybrid (@20*) I've hit it so well I also went and got the 3 hybrid (@17*)...also, I play them with Nippon GOST shafts that are slightly longer, so in reality, I don't lose much distance versus the 4w.

Experimenting with converting back to fairway woods. I was a 17 and 20 degree hybrid player, but I felt I was lacking some options off the tee, and was having some difficulty with the 17 hybrid on hardpan. Took a gamble on the Cobra f6 Baffler, and it is an absolute beast. Its the fairway wood for people who hate fairway woods. Not leaving the bag ever.

Wishing they made a 7 wood version. I just picked up an F8 7-8W, and will give it a fair shake. But head is slightly bigger, when it should be smaller. Shaft is slight longer when it should be shorter. Looks like Cobra didnt remedy this in the radspeed line either. We need a Radspeed Tour 5 and 7.

I also faced similar issues with my 13.5 deg strong 3 wood.

However, I think I have finally found its use - I hit it from the tee in narrow fairways, and it finds fairways much better than the driver with little sacrifice on distance.

I also try to use it for par 5s if the lie and the grass length is perfect, but never experienced a "solid shot" putting my ball on green with two shots yet...

exactly what I’m going too…just hit hybrids soooo much better than fairway woods. The smaller head with the shorter length means better contact, but a little shorter distance which I’ll take

To be fair I’m testing the Apex Utility Wood this year

Twenty years ago when I played bush golf in Western Australia I used to smoke a 3 wood off the tee, and again off the fairway.

Twenty years of not much golf later, and I can't hit a 3 or 5 wood to save my life. Looking back, it's come to me that we played club length lie on every fairway, so we sat each fairway shot up on a nice lie, not unlike a tee box. Anyway...

I'm dropping them.

10.5* driver, 19* hybrid, then old school loft 3 (21*)-P(47*) irons plus 3 wedges.

In three months I'll change my mind again.

Im considering not carrying.

Can carry two of these three:

17 degree 4-wood

18 utility iron

21 utility iron

I don’t use fairway wood off tee, unless must for a par 3. Otherwise it’s driver or utility iron.

In the bag:

9 Degree BOM w/ Aldila NVS 65

17 Degree BOM 4 Wood w/ Aldila NVS 65

21 Degree Dynacraft Utility Iron

4-PW, 52, 56, 60 Alpha MDC Irons & Wedges w/ Apollo Acculite 95 Shafts
