Anyone Play a 9-Wood?

Im interested in this thought as well. I guess I look at myself as the player who's taking a 3/4 shot with almost every club except driver. I put such a premium on control. So for some time Ive played a four iron because Ive thought the shorter shaft will give me more consistent dispersion.

I too dislike hybrids, so I wonder if playing a nine wood and playing that same controlled 3/4 shot will get me better distance without dropping off in the control category.

Play a M4 7HL. 24 degrees. Absolutely love it. So easy to hit. Off the tee, off the deck, doesn’t matter. Ridiculously easy to control the flight. I even use it to get out out of trouble. 175-200 to the green and gotta keep it under a branch? No problem. Back of my stance and drag the club through the zone. Comes out like a rocket. Way easier and more forgiving than hitting a long iron stinger

Yes, for a couple of years now.  The most versatile club in the bag from distance.  Particularly useful for someone that doesn't coexist with hybrids, and/or no longer can reliably hit long irons.  Great for the more "seasoned" golfers amongst us.  For the record, 9 wood is a 24* V-Steel.

Yes, an Epic Flash 9 at 23* with an Evenflow Green shaft. Got it late in the season, so I've only hit it at the range and hit a couple of shots last week during a quick 9 holes, so I'm still getting used to it. Agree that it seems good for the "more seasoned" among us, LOL.

Clubs: Ping (Driver, 5W, 5H, 6H, 7i-UW), Cleveland (wedges), Odyssey 2-Ball counter balanced

Ball: Maxfli Tour (yellow) or Vice Pro (neon lime); Callaway ORG 7 bag; Shot Scope x5

The V-Steel 7 and 9 woods are basically the same size as a modern ‘forgiving’ hybrid model (e.g., TS2).  I have a regular playing partner that still carries a laminated 5 wood with a steel shaft despite an otherwise modern bag.  It is smaller than some hybrids (and sounds glorious when he hits it...),

What is it that drives some that direction - lie angle, look at address, ..?  I recognize most of the modern 7/9 woods are bigger with ability to incorporate some tech.

Not being critical - just curious.

If you hit fairway woods with confidence and do not like hybrid's, then go for it.   Vijay Singh bagged a 9 wood for years on tour.  Many LPGA pro's do also.   They use them because they work

Driver: Callaway Mavrik

4 Wood: PXG Gen 5

7 Wood: PXG Gen 5

Irons: Cleveland ZipCore XL (5-AW)
Wedges: Cleveland CBX 4 ZipCore  (54, 58)
Putter: Toulon Memphis

Yeah, I replaced my 4h with a 9w a few seasons ago. I had trouble getting the hybrid airborne at timed, but the 9w launches easily. I also have a 7w.

I carry both, but get less yardage with my 4h.  Part of me still wants to carry both so I can make the fairway a bit larger with the hybrid, BUT can add another wood or wedge.  Torn.

I am looking to add a 9-wood to my bag. Many of those available seem to have large heads. Who makes a 9-wood with a smaller (relatively speaking) head?

The Ping line (not SFT) are "normal" sized. The G30, G400, G410, and G425 should easily fit the bill. I currently play the G410 9w, but it replaced the G410, and G30 before it.

I played a round a few years back with a player who had a 15 wood. 'Definitely seemed to be the right club.

I think a big part of it is swing plane. Those with flatter swings tend to hit fairway woods better than long irons or hybrids.

Not for me, but I have a friend who bags a Wooden Ginty, and has since late 80’s or so!

Never left his bag “kind of”. It’s a 3rd generation of sorts. He bagged his Ginty until his Grandmother passed away, then he swapped his out with hers, which stayed in the bag from 06’ till his mother passed 2 years ago, then put his mother’s in his bag.  Come to find out, when he started playing golf at 8 years old, he hit his grandmothers old set, so they bought him a new set of clubs (Lynx Parralax) for his 11th Birthday in 92’ with his very own Ginty to go with the set.

I don’t know the loft, but he doesn’t carry a 3-4 iron, I think it’s in the 4 iron spot. It Only makes an appearance from the rough..... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Some of the more seasoned crowd - which is probably critical mass in this thread - may remember the old Austad’s mail order catalog from the late seventies.  They had a set back then that was ‘woods’ all the way to PW replacement.  I never saw them in the flesh but by today’s standards they were probably smaller than that old Adams V4 set.  Some of you guys just started you journey down the path of enlightens about 40 yrs too late...

I came in the golf scene when Austads was still around in the mid ‘80’s. I do remember thinking those were for old guys.  Now that I have a 7 wood, and a 9 wood doesn’t sound like a bad idea......
