Anyone Play a 9-Wood?

I switch between a 9 wood and a 4 iron. The 9 wood is great for that super high and straight shot but that is all it does. Very one dimensional.

I have a Ping G425 9 wood with a stock stiff Ping shaft, set to the small -. It plays at 22.5*. To me it’s straighter than a 22* Ping hybrid was for me to hit. I also hit it higher. Distance is the same, 205 yards. Very trustworthy.

I had been a 5w and 7w guy for a few years...then 4 iron and up

but started to struggle with 5w off the deck and it became only a tee ball shot for me when I didn't want driver

so

I recently went 7w and 9w.....7w can be off deck or tee now comfortable and lose maybe 10 yards from 5w

9w is a 'different' flight and carry/total package to the 4 iron , so I use them for different things

9w can be slightly longer carry as well

I've successfully replaced my 3 iron with a Ping G400 7 wood. I'm now considering replacing my 4 iron with a Ping 9 Wood. I play on a links course where wind is a major factor so is this a silly idea? Is there anything else I could try? I'm already using Mizuno Fli-Hi irons up to 6 iron.

You could consider a 21* or 23* hybrid.

I started using a 9 wood about 1-2 months ago. It’s great but not so much in the windy days/courses. It can still work for shots going with the wind but shots into the wind get caught up way too much. I use a ping icrossover as a substitute club depending on the conditions.

I tried a 9 wood because I liked the idea of having a 5 and then 9 wood for gapping, but the 9 wood was too high/spinny for me. I’d rather use a wood instead of a hybrid for forgiveness so I’d like to try a 7 wood with a short shaft. I feel like a 5 and then 7 wood at standard length wouldn’t have enough distance between clubs.

A high, straight shot than can approach 200 yards (depending on swing speed)?  Pretty good one  dimension.  Will outperform my 4 iron any day but that's me-- not consistent with 4 iron.

Agreed! It is a very good one dimension as that is one of the reasons I will play mine.

Spoiler

I am a lower ball hitter. Not crazy about hybrids. I have a Titleist TSR1 7 wood that I love, rarely mis hit it. It’s so easy to blast. High, soft landing shots. I think I will definitely replace my TSR1 5 hybrid with the TSR1 9 wood this year.

By the way, there’s a YouTube video on 9 Woods by “the average Golfer”. It’s pretty good.

With 4 irons these days ranging from 18* to 23* what club a 7 wood or 9 wood replaces has become super blurred.  In the mid 90's the 7 wood seemed to replace the 3 iron, but now things have changed.  One thing I would recommend is trying them and figuring which you need.  I am working through a possible 4 iron replacement (Mine is 21*) and am leaning towards a 21* 7 wood, and possibly shortening the shaft.  I hit the 7 wood plenty high, and shortening it but 3/4* shouldn't drop the height too much while pulling off a few yards.  Determining if I can play off speed shots with it will be the biggest thing.

When I have tried a 9 wood it was serious moon balls that didn't quite carry as far as my 4 iron, and also stopped right away, while the 4 iron runs out on a green maybe 20 feet.  On a fairway I can lower the 4 iron and have it run even farther, but I have not been able to really hit the 9 wood lower.  I think seeing that much loft messes with my brain to where I move around too much trying to hit it lower.

Many players swap the long irons and high lofted fairway woods depending on the course. If you're playing a course with firm fairways and little trouble in front of the green, then the long iron seems to be the right choice. However, play a course with deep front bunkers where going high and landing soft is the play, then the 9 wood might be the right tool for the job.

I mistakenly called the 9 wood one dimensional, I am sorry.  Yes, it only goes high and soft but you can hit it out of fairway bunkers, hit out of heavy rough, bomb it over trees from the other fairway, and is just so easy to hit straight.  It has become my favorite club.

I did the same thing (originally borrowed my wife's then bought my own) 😁  It's one of my favorite clubs, really like it for long par 3s.  I have an Atmos Blue S in mine that I pulled from a 7 wood

I put a Callaway Rogue ST Max 9w with a Fujikara Ventus Blue Velocore shaft in my bag about a year ago and it might be my favorite club.  Smooth easy 185yds to 200yds if I really get into it.  Just launches it, so much height!  I started laying back on one of our par 4s so I would have that club in my hand and from a flat spot versus a 6i or 7i with a down hill lie that has been kicking my a** the last year. Also cost more than my driver!

Started out G400 - presently play G425. Will switch to the G430 eventually.....really miss my G400 - it was small & very workable for me

The G400 series were excellent, but I eventually swapped them out for G410's or G425's because of the new adapter that allowed one to adjust the club to a flat lie. Produced a slightly less hook machine.
