I know bud. I have a golf studio in my house using a Uneekor sim. I'm pretty familiar with PGA tour average ball statistics. I play MP-20 blades with standard lofts and my numbers are pretty similar to theirs (Not at all implying I play to their level!). There's just no way I could spin a 6-iron enough to make it retain ridiculous spin after a bounce in 4" rough. In fact,  you'd have to have a pretty crappy delivery to impart more than, say, 7000 rpm with a 6 iron. They average 6231, fyi....

Two guys that don’t play any more saying they never would have done it...yet two players and two separate groups do the exact same thing to the contrary. Doing it differently doesn’t make it wrong.

It appears to me the issue is the rule change. The way the rule was afforded more integrity to the golfer. Besides, when we are waiting for an official, that's the perfect time to make a beer run to the fridge. It's all about managing time......be it on the course, or in the den.

Aside from just the extra benefit to the player, I think this whole situation is a possibly unforeseen consequence. You don't get relief in a bunker, which means you used to only get it in the fairway or on the green, where the embedded nature of the ball is there for all the world to readily see. In 4" rough, only the player knows what the hell's going on down there. I've seen guys at my club do what appears to be fluffing their lie or thinning the rough behind, but it's pretty tough to really tell from across a fairway.

 

Relief for embedded balls in rough is sort of necessary on some of the courses that I play, that are so terribly drained and inconsistently mown that the "rough" can easily be a mud-soaked patch of moss. But these guys play on pristine courses, there's really no need for a rule change for them IMO.
