From G400 to G425, but prioritize driver or fairway woods?

Hi,

I have G400 driver, 3W, 5W and 7W, and I'm very happy with them.

Now they are getting old-ish and I have heard a lot of positive stuff about the G425 driver and fairway woods.

When reading reviews, it seems to me that the fairway woods have improved the most.

Has anyone done a similar switch (changing both driver and fairway woods), and would like to comment?

Thanks!

As long as each current club gives the right launching conditions, you probably won't find much of improvements with the new release

Driver: Taylormade SIM, 8 degrees, VA Composite Drago 75 X-Stiff

3W: Taylormade M5 15 degrees, VA Composite Drago 75 X-Stiff

Hybrids: Titleist 915H (3-6)Project X 6.0 Flighted shafts

Wedges: Bridgestone J33 (50,56,60), Project X 6.0 Flighted shafts

Putter: Directed Force 2.1 Putter

Switching the driver was the most beneficial for me - as I've been accustomed to the fairway wood yardage & hitting tendencies.

You mileage may vary.... but I went the big stick as it was the most improvement over the 400 series .......for ME

I have not but I can tell you a little about Ping G425s.

I really like the current Titleist woods--part of it may be because I always have, going back to the Howitzer driver, the Pro Trajectory fairways, and a 983K driver with which I did fairly well.

Part of it is merely cosmetic.  Titleist doesn't use club numbers on woods which in practicality means less than nothing but it's just another little reason to like them.

But while 12 and 16.5° work for me, 18 and 21 aren't quite what fit my eye.  Mentally, at least, I want a wider gap to 19 and then 22°.   It is mental because we're talking lofts within the manufacturer's tolerance.  I understand that.   Ping G425s did came in 19 and 22°  (under the SFT sub-model classification), however,  and the launch monitor / sim said I hit the snot out of them.

That means less than nothing, perhaps, but I discovered something out on the actual course.  I hit them with both decent trajectory and decent dispersion, thus causing me to put the Ping shafts in my Titleists as well.   Trying the G425s even made my Titleists better, at least for me..

How many shots per round do you hit with each?  I would start with the club you use the most.

The G425 fairways are very nice compared to the G400, which I found spun more than expected.

That's a valid point! I hit my 3W pretty often off the tee (almost as often as the driver). And a lot of 7W nowadays.

So only the 5W is rarely used for me.

I really like the fairways and hybrids from the G425 line but not the drivers as much.  The former look so good without the turbulators and sound nice too.  For drivers, I had trouble launching the LST and couldn’t handle the sound of the Max.

This is the same assessment i had with the new G425 series. The FWs are super easy to hit.

Trade in your driver, 3 and 5 woods for -

G410 Max / Tensei Orange - The G425 may have a slight potential MOI advantage, but its feel and sound are grossly bad. I’m not normally a “feel” biased player, but in this case… The Tensei Orange is far better at allowing your own swing mechanics to produce a straight shot than a biased driver, which robs you of spin and distance.

G425 4 wood. Length of a 3 wood, trajectory of a 5. It’s just a better solution in every way to your current setup in my experience.

I would definitely try them before making a decision. IMO the G400 series was the best series PING has made in the last decade plus.  I've owned the driver and hybrid and am not convinced they are an improvement.  As always YMMV.

I will say this, I switched from g410 fwy woods and hybrid to g425. I don’t see any performance gain, but do prefer the no turbulator look. I’m not sure, but thinking I hit my g410 hybrid better than my g425. Not sure if it’s shaft, but I really loved my g410 hybrid. Not there yet with my g425.

For what it's worth (because I'm a Titleist driver/woods player), but I have 3 close friends that all play G400 drivers and woods that tried the G425s across the board and they all swore that the G400 was still longer and more effective. I would definitely do the testing before getting rid of those G400s.

I also had the G425 3W and 4H myself to test against my TSi2 versions of those and the Titleists blew them out of the water. But I've always hit Titleist well. My friends have not. I always trust their thoughts on Ping related items and again, they're all G400 lovers.

I thought I was " upgrading " my G400 Max Driver , 3 Wood with G425 Max driver and 3 wood but the driver was a mistake in my experience.  I love the 3 wood and

picked up a 19 degree hybrid.  I ended uo selling the G425 Max driver and put a Titleist TSi3 in the bag and like it .

I hit the G425 at a demo day, and it was a good club. There was not enough difference to replace my G400 Max. I do have G425 3&5 woods, and they are better than the G400s. Looking back, I wish I never got rid of my G25 fairway woods. I think they were better than either the G400s or G425s.

I played a G425 5-Wood and I really didn't like it and sold it super quickly. Can't speak for the driver or 3-wood but i never thought the term "too forgiving" could be a thing but that is how I would describe this club. I love to work the ball both ways with almost all of my clubs and can do it pretty extremely (super handsy player, huge Bubba Watson fan lol) but I found it impossible to do with this club. I found it physically impossible to hit anything but a high draw (i know this is an incredibly weird complaint) and sometimes found it drawing too much. Really wish they released more than just a "MAX" version for this club but I would 100% stick w the G400's you currently have

I put a low spin shaft in my G400 MAX and set it to -1.  It's up there with the longest drivers that's been in the bag but also hit alot more fairways with it.  I've tried the G410 LST, G410+, G425 MAX and LST.  They're all good but the G400 MAX was best of the bunch.  After horsing around with the G410s and G425s the G400 MAX just performed the best.  They all hit about the same distances.   My G410 7 wood is the best club I've ever put in my bag.
