compressed air grip removal

Recommended Posts

Just saw this and wanted to give my quick insight,

I have a 2gallon Compressor that maxes at 120psi.

I have yet to be able to blow off grips at the max 120psi, with the double sided grip tape. I have just gave up and cut them off.  I watched videos, that you could stick a tool or a coat hanger, but if you are trying to save the grip that might mess it up.

Once the grip is off and I use regular masking tape, I can blow the grip on with about 60-100psi, and 120psi if I really have a tight setup.

Depends on what type of grip you are trying to remove. If you are trying to put on or remove a 21" Jumbomax armlock putter grip on a LAGP armlock shaft, you need to go really high on the PSI.

But if you are removing a rubber or rubber-like grip, you need to be careful or else you might pop one. I have popped one before and its not fun on the ears.

Squirt some solvent in the end of the grip through the hole, then apply 20-30psi. Slowly start twisting the butt end of the grip back and forth, and it'll slowly come loose. Once it starts getting loose, work your way down the grip until it comes off. This can take 5-10 minutes.

+1 this is exactly my method. I've never ruined a grip this way

It takes patience and know how. I've also ruined plenty trying.

That about sums it up for any and all methods (I'm aware of) for getting taped grips off in a way they can be reused.

The big take away is that, if you think you might want to take the grips off w/o cutting them off so you can reuse them - and if you have a choice, avoid using tape to put them on in the first place.   That's the biggest benefit of the compressor - to use it during the installation.

I never knew that!  Thank you very much.  🙂

The theory is the compressed air is shot up and hits the grip cap, forced down between the inside of the grip and the shaft, loosening the grip tap adhesive, allowing the grip to come off. So if you put some solvent down the grip cap hole and only the top half of the grip comes loose, put some more solvent down the grip to attack the adhesive at the lower half. An recognize, sometimes the grip comes off, but some of the old grip tape is still attached inside the grip. If you want to re-use the grip, you need to get the old tape out for proper adhesion on re-install. Use a piece of wire bent a little at the end to snag the tape in the grip. If you have not plans to keep the grip you are taking off, cutting off is faster.

I frequently swap grips using my pancake compressor.  Like others said, I put some grip solvent inside the butt end of the grip and try to blow it through.  Works about 75% of the time, but some grips just won't release and have to be cut.  I use full pressure, so have to use a PVC pipe that is just bigger than the butt end of the grip while doing it.  This prevents grip blowout from the side of the grip.

^^^ exactly what I do, my compressor goes to 140 psi and I have my special "pipe" to prevent grip explosions.

You've got way too much time on your hands.

A grip put on with 2-way tape is only coming off in one of two ways: injected grip solvent under the grip or it's cut off.  10-15 seconds is my average time. 30 seconds or more and the knife is coming out.

I only use my compressor  to blow off grips for grips that went on via compressed air.

I've actually only done this twice. Both times to save a nearly new $20 grip. My tool of choice for removing grips is a utility knife. 😛

What do you folks use to put the solvent into the grip cap?  I've got a bottle with a spout, and that's not real conducive to getting the solvent into the hole.

I use my grip solvent gun to squirt into the hole.  The grip solvent gun and needle is still the best way to get off a grip - if you know how to use it.

So I have figured out how to pull grips off with air (including double sided tape installs) thanks to the above tips. So thanks for all that.  I have had success on assembled clubs as the club head seals the shaft cavity but what do you guys do to pull grips from loose shafts?  Thinking maybe fill the tip with quick dry epoxy and drill out later?  Any help is appreciated.

Jam a tee into the end and then some electrical or duct tape looped over it so the tee doesn't blow out.  It doesn't take much more than that.

I've had success with air removal of taped grips by wrapping the grip with duct tape (sticky-side out) to keep the grip from bubbling or blowing up rather than using a piece of PVC. Spraying some solvent in the butt end and trying to loosen the open end with a coat hanger and solvent might help. It tends to take a few minutes but usually can get them off. Most of the time tape is still stuck to the inside of the grip and is more trouble than it's worth, so unless it's a putter grip I really want to keep I'll just cut them off.

Compressors are best used for removing grips that were installed with a compressor.  So if you want to start installing grips with a compressor then great - get a compressor.

However, if you want to remove grips installed with tape and solvent, this is a significantly better tool to use than a compressor (IMO).

Spot on - the only grips I struggle with using one of these is a super stroke putter grip. I also use Bramptons HF-100 as it is a little more oily than spirit based and works better with the removal tool

/|\ This.

I put a tee in the end of the shaft and place it up against the wall behind my bench (no tape needed). I mounted my vice so I could turn it and do the grips this way. I spin it 90* to pull heads and adapters.
