This was an interesting comment by her, remembering that she failed to get through Q school after she turned pro (fate?):

Awesome stuff - they also claim that they invented the pavlova but Aussies claim we did.

A shortish story...

 

I was staying in Auckland on business and had breakfast at my hotel (Pullman Auckland) with my company's NZ head. He was an expat English guy that had lived most of his adult life in NZ, and like many long-term expats anywhere in the world, can be evangelical about their adopted country.

 

We walked out of the hotel just before 9am and I said to him "why don't NZers wear any colour, you all wear black, grey, blue denim or white". He disagreed. The Pullman is on a raised part of the CBD fringe next to parklands and Auckland Uni, a lovely spot. As we walked down towards our office in the CBD, we could survey the crowd of workers below us, scurrying to get to their offices and I said lets count how many are wearing anything with colour. Of 300 people, we counted 11.

He was flabbergasted, he'd never noticed it before. Once you realise that you can't help but notice it going forward.

 

Lydia has now spent a lot of her life outside NZ so may no longer be a typical NZer re clothing, but lets see what she wears over the next few tournaments. Lydia watch.

 

The real point of the story however - the Pullman had a small but excellent bar which had a fine collection of aged tequilas, very unusual in Oz and NZ 😁

Agreed, between Auckland and Perth (which is no Sydney/Melbourne either), the only memories I had of Auckland was going into the "boardwalk" area looking at the America's Cup "exhibit" and taking a cab to some good dinner place quite a distance away from the downtown hotel I stayed in - granted I was on a biz trip there too during the  NZ "winter season" (which pales in comparison to Toronto's winter) ... 

 

In Perth, at least I managed to go play at Whaleback Golf Course (and it was not a biz trip)... haha

 

Either way, I am still wondering why I'm freezing my Word not allowed off here  in Toronto - maybe I'm just waiting for the CP Open come August then I'll skeedaddle back to sunny tropics of SG haha (prolly not in another few years)

 

But I definitely concur, Aussie vs NZ to visit/live, no brainer... EDIT: some other places in Perth area I did manage to go to include: Ngilgi Cave, Cape Naturaliste etc -- all bec of my friends' insistence bec I was a "visitor" LOL.  I'd rather keep going to the, Whaleback GC instead esp when I only  Changi (as a "cheaper course") to play in SG (Malaysia no count -- that's another "country as well" and no, I'm not a member of Sentosa - and all those expensive GCs in SG LOL)

At times NZ is like an Antipodean version of the film 'Pleasantville' with its black and white world. There's a reason that the Hobbit/LOTR was filmed in NZ - like stepping back in time (or to Middle Earth haha).

 

However, I'm just chiding my NZ cousins, it is a beautiful part of the world. Australia is so remote from the rest of the world yet we think NZ is even more remote. Maybe in our current times that is a good thing.

 

Good skiing and fantastic food and scenery. Some stunning golf courses.

 

And Lydia (or is she Aussie....hmmm).

Grace Kim shot +4 in her first Epson Tour as a member; this is quite a sticker shock in terms of the caliber of competition here in the States.

 

Her talent is still there; I look for a much improved round tomorrow.
