Hovland’s Swing

Is it just me, or is Hovland’s swing just a little bit over the top? At a minimum, he is one of the very few that doesn’t shallow out on the downswing. Do I have this right?

No.  He shallows quite a bit.

He's def OTT and hits that little bleeder that starts out slightly to the left and curves back to the right.  He's not as OTT as the angle shows though IMO, or he would be hitting monster slices.

Interesting, I guess I didn’t think much about the difference. The first set of videos does seem to show that he shallows.

He clearly shallows the club. He flexes his lead wrist to start the downswing (cast A) and the shallows very effectively. His hand path may give the perception of more out towards to the ball, but if you listen to the AMG guys, that type of movement can also be a shallowing move (when done properly)

His move is OTT.... but doesnt mean he's way outside on it cause takes it back so shallow.

I like it. It’s an athletic move. Not a picturesque reverse C or anything, but the dude has power and coordination. Love his ballflight, too. 
As a hockey player with a pretty violent looking swing, this is right up my alley.

I’m a fan of that swing. Probably looks OTT but if you isolate the downswing without seeing the backswing, it all looks on plane and relatively ‘normal’ to me. 🤷‍♂️ If you could copy it and know how it works, you probably wouldn’t be on golfwrx! 🤣

Looks to me like he aims right and hits an intentional pull.  Not just a little either.

I love his swing. He likes to fade the ball but his clubhead is inside the ball until the very end and it doesn’t seem OTT to me.  His body position at impact is unreal and he’s also the nicest guy. He’s my favorite guy on tour.

Looks like a gravedigger’s swing to me. The Scandinavians in general are lovely people, if they keep off the gargle anyway !

Only on WRX… guy is 24 and 4th in the world (and would probably be higher if not for short game weaknesses) but yet his swing has to be flawed, by looking at it from our couch…

There’s an 18 hole course in Oslo which I’ve played. I believe he’s from there. But he attended a USA scheme - marvellous system. He likely had a shed full of these infernal gadgets - poor sod.

How do you get to these positions at impact if you are over the top and steep?

Basically his move involves a little OTT with the hands but the wrist move allows him to shallow the club successfully and still get to that position. It’s a solid move, just haven’t seen a ton like it.

Pretty simple swing, Hovland and others like Dustin who keep the clubface looking at the ball (face on same plane as the ball) don't have to tap the brakes in the downswing to square up the face through the hitting area.

His hands trace a line from the P4 hand position to the ball until about P5, and then get underneath it, where his left arm is inside a bit and the shaft is very shallow - pointing well outside the ball. Pretty dang good!

I may be wrong here but I think his hand path is on top of his backswing plane, but actually on a good delivery plane and giving the appearance of OTT. Since his shaft is pretty upright going back so the two kind of cancel our.

He's not over the top, he just has the left arm jutted out a bit.

Watching him more yesterday and today at Bay Hill, it sure looks like he hits a bit of a pull cut to me.  He’s fantastic, love him but unusual swing to be sure.  Anyone else see this graphic yesterday?   Blue line is through swing - clearly above they backswing ..

Whether the club head is above or below the line it traced on the backswing doesn't determine whether he's OTT. And I don't pay enough attention to the tour to know what his stock shot is but if his approach on that one was negative, maybe it's just how he wanted to play the hole?? But I'm not sure I trust that camera angle to tell us the path, anyway - doesn't look DTL to me. And his path is going right through his midsection, so pretty well shallowed.
