Did you ever finish a round and (despite a totally absurd double and triple) shoot a decent score, and think "dang, I'm not a bad golfer!"?

 

I did today. Not spectacular (except for this one putt). Just boring and solid. Consistent. Finished low 80s. But a surprisingly satisfying low 80s.

'Round', no.  'Hole', yes.  Most of the time, I've taken to seeing my golf as 18 separate holes rather than one round.  That way, when I have the inevitable 'blow-up' hole, I can just ignore it and move on.  That might change if I can ever consistently eliminate the blow-up, but I ain't gettin' any younger.

My group embraces the blow ups in a humorous way. We have a fun “cycle” which is a round including a triple bogey, double bogey, bogey, par and birdie. It makes for a lot of fun and kidding around and there are some decent scores made despite the triple and double. We have even had a few bi-cycles, doing it twice😀.

I try to not think about what score I'm shooting until it's over and yes, I routinely end up 3-4 shots better than I "feel" like I'm playing so yeah, it works. 

 

Granted, I don't think you can avoid it if you're playing really well, but in general it's great for players in the 70s and 80s.

i had this exact round (9 holes) on friday. 

 

played early and just wanted to get some swings in. next thing you know, i birdie the first hole. then i got distracted talking to the two old women i was playing with. 

 

i didn’t hit any great shots. had a couple of good up and downs. but i didn’t hit any bad ones. 

 

lazy bogey on 18 (played the back 9) and i look down at my scorecard expecting to pencil in a 5 for my usual 42-45 and to my surprise it’s a 37! 1 over and a lazy bogey on the last kept me from my first ever even par round.

As a member, I also do not shoot such garbage numbers.  All of our drives are 300+ and only two-putt in hailstorms.

 

While drunk.

 

And stoned. 

 

And shortly after our third wife leaves us.

 

 

We are professional.

Quite often. 15 holes or so and I'm right around par, maybe 1 or 2 under or over. But then those other 3 holes...ugh. Usually just a couple of bad swings or poor decisions that can ruin the round. That's golf I guess.

this happens all the time- But in both ways. I'm not a card watcher, so I don't keep a running tally. But there are many instances of shooting the same score, say an 84, and one day feeling like "that was terrible", then the next time- "Gee, I played pretty well...". It can come down to hitting a few more fairways and greens, but not making putts. On other days, it could be all over the place off the tee, but getting back into play and salvaging pars or bogies.

I find most of my rounds disappointing lately as I've started trending the wrong direction. For me it would be specific shots that come off really well, had a great iron shot yesterday on a tough par 3 that made me feel good.

My last round actually, although my thought wasn't "dang, I'm a good golfer." It was "that just felt really nice, if I can continue with the small improvements I'll be in really good shape."

2 friends and I went 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 over two holes. 4, 5 & 6 on a Par 4. 2, 3 & 7 on the next Par 3. That scorecard was a lot of fun to look at.

I’ve had a great time playing since retiring the scientific calculator to total my score.  Them gozintas weren’t!

Finished decent round with the thought that (insert swing thought) is DEFINITELY a step in the right direction and that with practice even brighter days are ahead. This has yet to actually occur
