Most Memorable Personal Golf Memory?

Mine was when I made my 1st (and only) hole in one while playing with my dad. How about y'all?

Without a doubt the first time I shot even par. I still have the score card framed in my living room. Two birdies and two bogeys. I was in a good mood for a month after that

If I had to choose, it was my most recent Hole in One. My first HIO was an accident and second was during casual round on a executive course the never felt legit. 

 

My most recent one, 6 years ago, was in competition, and was perfect shot, hit just as I wanted with a little draw to the pin, landed and release about 3 feet into the hole with about the same pace as you would putt it. It was beauty and helped me clean up at the prize table enough that I came out about even with the bar tab. 

 

Runner up - playing the Old Course for the first time.

Hard to say - I've had quite a lot of stellar memories. 

 

Teeing off on 18 at Pebble the first time was pretty special since that was a tee shot I'd wanted to hit practically my entire life. Playing the Old Course was an amazing - and physically brutal - experience. The feels certainly hit when walking across the Swilcan Bridge and realizing every great champion over the last 150+ years had done that same walk. Hitting #6 "Hogan's Alley" at Carnoustie in 2 was pretty awesome even though I didn't even come close to making the eagle putt. Or hitting it to 12 feet on #16; a crazy scary tee shot. My albatross at Hyland Hills outside of Pinehurst is up there. When I took down my high school team's top player - I was a sophomore, he was a senior - feels like my biggest competitive achievement. 

 

I could go on but I guess I'd have to go with the very last round I played with my dad before he passed. It was the first time in like 10 years he'd beat me - which he had no intention of ever letting me forget ... and the old man pulled it off 🙂

I'm a pretty competitive person and played collegiate sports--so i always said i wouldn't consider myself a golfer until i did well in a high level tournament.

 

So i would say my best memory is making my first points in the Quebec amateur interclub tournament. Either that or the first time i competed for my current club. First time i made points my club was in a lower group (almost like D2). The club i am at now is one of the top 10 in Quebec so playing for that team is quite an accomplishment

Shooting 40-29 with a lot of money in match play on the line in 1980’s on a tough course in FL.

 

Going birdie, birdie, hole-in-one, birdie, birdie, birdie in a money game against a Japanese pro in Japan in 1994.

 

Shooting my age at 65 years old.

 

Starting eagle, hole-in-one (4 under after two holes) about a year ago. The round went downhill after that :(.

 Getting arrested for trespassing with my buddy ( we were about 14 ) for jumping the fence to play on a closed golf course.

 

  We led the cops on quite a chase so they were pissed off

 

 The other kids in the neighborhood  cheered after we were escorted home in a squad car because the desk sergeant just laughed when   they tried to book us

A magical round on The Old Course with my wife and two daughters.  

 

Lots of memories tied for second that are family related.  Lots of memories tied for third that involve playing with friends old and new.

I`m only playing Golf for something over 2 years, but my most memorable memory so far was playing the first links course during a winter vacation on a dutch island.

 

The course itself was superb, but the setting was stunning. It wascold and rainy the whole day and my girlfriend and I were almost cancelling the teetime. But we went to the course and when we arrived at the driving range the rain stopped and the clouds rolled away.

We were able to tee off in the most beautiful sunshine and so my first links course was a fantastic experience. Let`s don`t talk about the score... 😉

Playing The Old course for the first time with a grizzled old scottish caddie, and then the missus filming my second shot to the 18th, and getting a little round of applause off people watching when i hit it to about 5ft (missed the friggin putt though)

The first time my older son beat me by a single stroke for 18 holes at age 11.

The first time my younger son beat me by three stokes for 18 holes on his 12th birthday.

He fell apart after the HIO and even put 2 tee shots OB on the last hole. He paid up and I never heard from him again! 🙂

I am lucky enough to golf with my daughter who is 7 on a regular basis. Many good memories of us last summer spending our evenings on the course. 

 

Hard to beat that.

Those memories are always great. I had a round in February where it was me, my mother, my grandma and my great grandma. One of my favorite memories in general, let alone golf memories

I have only really been playing for about 2 years, but I will share mine. 

 

Fall of 2020, my dad had just passed and I started playing golf with my brothers. Was in a deep depression because my mom had stage 4 cancer and I had just lost my dad.

 

We were almost done with the round and I wasn't playing well at all. I don't think I had a single par. One of those rounds that almost make you quit. Got to the 18th tee and I was taking practice swings and muttering complaints about where the ball was going to go. I then said "Come on, Pops...give me a little help on this one if you can".  I hit my tee shot and it was the drive of my life (to that point) straight as an arrow about 285 down the pipe. I hit my 2nd from 195ish (5i) and landed 3 ft from the pin for the tap in bird.  The hardest hole on the course and I just birdied it.

 

Now, for information purposes....I was averaging just over 220 with the driver at the time and about 80 of it was due east if you catch my drift. I didn't have another club in my bag that I could hit over 170. So I have zero doubt that I got help on that hole.

 

That was the hole that hooked me for a lifetime on golf. Every since I feel a connection to my dad when I am on the golf course. May sound crazy to some and that is the best way I can explain it.

Stepping off the tee box after hitting a drive on #1 and seeing that my teacher/coach was talking to an older gentleman about 40 feet away. I was summoned over to them and was introduced to Mr.Ben Hogan. I was 16 at the time, had read "5 Lessons" from cover to cover at least a dozen times, and had broken in the 70's for the first time around a week prior.

 

My teacher had caddied for him in the past and they'd kept a relationship to where my teacher was one of the few, non-family members, that was invited to Mr. Hogan's funeral. I'd heard my uncle talk about how Mr. Hogan had driven by the club on a couple of previous occasions (certainly out of his way), always unannounced, and simply just to visit an old friend.

 

Mr. Hogan shook my hand, and then looked at both of my hands (I didn't play with gloves then). He asked me to grip the 7-iron from my bag and noticed it was a Hogan '72 Apex, with #4 shafts. He moved my left hand a half knuckle stronger, had me leave my right hand as is, and told me to make a swing at a sweetgum ball, just off the tee box. I hit it and it flew with a tiny draw about 15 yards. He then told me to "let the hands go! Don't hold onto anything, and to just let the weight of the club release the club". 

He patted me on the back and wished me luck.

 

I'll never forget that day and have gripped the club that way ever since.

Around 3 months later I showed up at the course and my teacher brought a box to the lesson tee and told me to open it. In it was a new set of Apex II's, 2-E, with a 25th Anniversary Sand Wedge. All with Apex 4 shafts and Neumann grips. Also in there was a 3-paragraph letter from Mr. Hogan addressed to me, and 6 sleeves of the latest Hogan golf balls.

No, I’m not. I’m not on any other golf site, so I’ve not read it. If it’s the same story, perhaps someone “borrowed” it from a book I wrote that has the story in it? But, I’m the real deal. 😉

I only play casually and haven't accomplished much in the game, couple par 4 hole outs. So its gotta be 3 years back after the old man had finished all his cancer treatment and surgery, getting out to play 9 once he was feeling up to it. I was a bit emotional for sure, he introduced me to the game as a kid, and I only got back into playing like 4 years ago or so, so it was awesome to do that after fears it would never happen again.
