Simply put, your other clubs are going to be about 10º flatter. It's not always an easy thing to pop an 8-iron off a tight lie with the toe hanging that far. So if you're chipping, you either have to deal with the flatter club, or risk popping it while it's toe-down, changing the spin. That's why people are so surprised at the amount of spin this club will get; it's set up to work properly - it's not an "8-iron life hack".

 

It solves a problem because it essentially allows players a "long putt" even if they miss the green. A putting stroke is often much more consistent than a "manufactured" shot, and far less risky than a sand/lob chip for some. When you miss the green by a few yards, but can now have a "long putt" instead of risking a chili-dip, lots of players will try it out.

 

Other chippers haven't felt as solid, or didn't have the spin and control this one seems to have. There are a lot more players trying to go from 95->85 than there are 85->75.

Yes Ghost.  I definitely get the spin consistency advantage of a chipper.  I used to yip my chips and someone showed me the toe-down method of curing them and I never changed that method.

So finally held one....after tinkering I'm firm believer in matching whatever color code your irons & maybe minus 1". I felt the high swing weight as well. 

 

Ordered one for the wife - she seemed just fine practicing with the demo

Does it use the putter colour codes?

I don’t believe Ping will adjust lie angle, just loft. I went to a local club fitter to get mine bent to 40* loft and 2* flat. I did order it +1” at 36” like my putter and the graphite shaft that matched my irons.

 So total custom is easily possible.

I may be wrong but I remember someone saying they called Ping and was told they would not adjust the lie angle. May be wrong as failing memory forces me to use an eraser on my pencil 🙂

I know at the very beginning when they came out alot of stores sold out of them. I didn’t end up liking mine so I listed it slightly over $200 and got many messages from people stating that it was $179 at retail. I said yeah if you can find one. I just wanted to move it so finally accepted an offer for $170 shipped or thereabouts. If the prices are really that high I should have waited it out 😀

 

oh and to add right before the chipR came out their old ChipO was fetching over $300 on eBay.

I know my local galaxy sold out of theirs the morning of release.  I went in the afternoon of release and The mgr told me there were people at the store waiting for it to open, and they sold all 5 they got in before they could even put them on the floor.

I bought one as a Xmas gift for my dad, more as a joke.  He still has his old chippo in his bag that has been a running joke between us for years.  I may sell and just order a new one if I can get it by Christmas time.

As a follow-up to my post joking about putting a Stability Shaft in one of these, I’m now seeing that BGT has started to make stability shafts for wedges…

I got fed up with seeing good scores thrown away because of my chipping.  In my case," Father Time " and a few hand injuries have been wreaking havoc with my muscles, joints, and fingers.  I have developed a "yippy" or "jabby" stroke  with the delicate shots around the green. I'm still pretty good with shots that take a longer swing like flops and punches, but when it comes to the delicate pitches and chipping, I just don't have it anymore and I'm not going to waste hours on end searching for something I may never find again.

 

Long story short, I ended up messing around with the Odyssey X-act Tank, Cleveland Smart Sole, and the Cleveland Niblick before buying The Ping ChipR (black dot) a few months ago from a friend. I had the shaft extended 1" to match the length of my putters and tried a few different grips thicknesses before settling on the Winn Dri-Tac LT Oversize. I added one of Maltby's lead shaft counterweights weight to bring the swingweight somewheres around  D-9 - E-0. I personally think that the stock ChipR feels a little too "head heavy" from the factory.

 

Overall, the club has been a game changer for me.  The most important feature to me is the more traditional look of a regular iron when looking down at address. You can use a standard putting stroke but there are a bunch of ways to manipulate the clubface while still maintaining a putting stroke. On straightforward chips, I go hands ahead of the clubhead slightly and stroke through the ball with dead hands.  If I want to add a little height to the shot or just fly the ball a little further, I just open my stance and clubface slightly a little with a slight cutting action through the ball. You can add a little flipping action as well.   Pinnacles and Top Flite XL's will have more of a bounce & roll and my usual ProV1 has a little more of a check and roll.

 

It's a fun club to use and easy to calibrate distance with. It has similar feel for distance as my Odyssey OG Two Ball. 

 

I definitely recommend the club for anyone that struggles as bad as I was.   This chipper will be in my bag for the rest of my playing days.

I’m carding an 8.7 at the moment…not sure what defines “lower”
