New Ping ChipR

Recommended Posts

I’ve messed around twice with mine now. Playing at 33.5 blue dot. Feels best when I play it like a mini chip, which I’m not sure is any easier than with a wedge. Pitching on the other hand is much easier up to about 75 yards. I play to a 13 with a poor iron game and get up and down a good bit for reference.

Any lower handicap players using one? Which club did you guys take out of the bag? I’m thinking of dropping my 54-58, using the Chipr and having a 50-56

I'm a 1.7 and have it in the bag. I have a terrible short game and don't carry a driver any more, so have room in the bag. If I ever get back to carrying a driver I can drop the 3w or 5w depending on the course.

I had it adjusted to my putter lie angle, and bent to 40* loft. I like the dyla-wedge grip but prefer as much of a non-tapered grip as I can get, so to play around I pulled the stock, added tape to eliminate the shaft taper, 2x-sided foam tape for thickness, then blew the dyla back on. Looks like a fatty version of Finau's grips, but it feels awesome (and altering the grip was a free experiment).

I've played 1 round and a few practice sessions. I don't have it dialed in yet...as I haven't had time to practice. Which is why I bought it. I play 10 times a year and maybe practice that often. Allowing me to focus on one or two clubs and eliminating the practice time for multiple clubs around the green that is needed to compete in some local/state tournaments should be beneficial. In the couple practice sessions, it's definitely improved my distance-to-hole across the board. I typically have 2 dozen balls on the practice green and I'm in the 50-60% tap in range with normal chips, including several made chips. That has never happened with an 8/9 iron chipping. It may just be the honeymoon phase - but I am digging the club so far.

I've landed on a single-finger, reverse overlap grip for the putting-style stroke (normal putting grip is two-finger reverse overlap), then anything more than a normal putt stroke gets my normal single-overlap grip. I really like the consistency and plan to put the effort into the club for the next year.

Had mine bent to 41* and 2* flat (like putter) and have had a bit more success. I think next is the lower grip build up grip mod by @D0ch0l1d4y

I think i'll end up going another degree of loft. I've been practicing on some less than smooth/fast greens so will likely need a little more loft for control.

I'm amazed that more people dont use a hybrid for chipping.

If they bag one . . .

This ChipR can help a lot of people who've never learned to use their 7-9 (depending on respective iron). The key to the short game is turning 3 shots into 2, more often than you don't.

The answer to better golf is work your butt off and learn how to hit it better, farther, and make more putts.

And have you seen an improvement in your short game?

I believe I have.  I have always reached for the putter rather than a wedge if at all possible.  This club lets me “putt” from a wider variety of lies.

I’d say result proximity is slightly better, but the mitigated risk of a chunk or blade is the real payoff.

I actually carry two hybrids (3 & 4), but find them way too hot to chip with.  I found myself decelerating as a result…leading to fat contact and/or bleed over into my putting game.

I'm amazed by the opposite -- that anybody chips with a hybrid. I've tried it and find that hybrid faces are too hot to control distance around the green. I also think a hybrid that's, say, 22 degrees of loft, isn't any good for elevating the ball for more than a few inches. I could see it being useful for somebody that plays on slower greens or plays a lot of links golf where you're hitting bump and runs regularly, though.

I agree. I think it's so hard to control

I'd be willing to be a lot of folks who bag a 58/60 for greenside shots would save a lot of strokes utilizing a club like this instead.

I, however, want to suffer so the 60 stays in lol

Both at 35, though I typically choke down on the putter (and it's in the season of change...struggle bus continues).

The reason I like the non-tapered grip is that I choke up/down depending on stance/lie, etc.

What are the grip rules on this club? I think USGA only allows flat grips on putters. Since this is supposed to be played like a putter, is that an option. Extending that question further, would someone be able to put an armlock shaft? Just curious how the rules work.

My understanding is a flat grip would make this an illegal club -- it has to be round. I don't know about an armlock shaft though.

While it is meant to be swung like a putter, it would not be considered a putter because it has too much loft.  Therefore, normal club conforming rules would apply.  No flat grips, no armlock.

To be clear - unless you are playing in USGA sanctioned events (or events that require adherence to USGA regulations) you can do whatever you want. If a putter grip will enhance your enjoyment of a weekend round with the boys, no one is gonna put you in golf jail 😄

I agree in principal.

In this case I’ll be really surprised if people still have this club in the bag a year from now.

I guess it would make sense to explain my logic on this bet.

So far it seems like most users are generally finding some things to like about the Chip-R. Hopefully the club gives them confidence that they can chip correctly and get the ball close to the hole sometimes.

At the same time, how many users here are already modifying the club to try to make it fit how they want to use it, or to make it more versatile? How many are finding situations on the course where their new magic wand is almost, but not quite, the club they need for a specific shot?

My guess is that when you carry a club like this to the practice green your eye is drawn mostly to the shots it can handle. The course is full of shots it cannot.

As users chip with more confidence I think they'll find that the tools they needed for versatile AND accurate chipping were in their bags all along.

Always good to talk to yourself.. haha. I don't disagree. I think these products are great for a segment. There must be a market for them or they would not be out there. The lack of versatility and taking a spot in the bag could cause holes somewhere else. But, if it helps build confidence till they are ready to move on to something else. Awesome.
