Can someone explain why all these 20 handicaps are so obsessed with the sound of a driver? If something performs better than other offerings but sounds weird to your discerning tour player ear who cares?

A few points on this...Tour Players aren't playing the same heads as retail offerings and many have them Hot Melted for performance characteristics and that tends to mute the sound. The sound of a driver equates to feel and I see in your signature that you play a G400 and that was the best driver all around Ping produced in a decade in my opinion. I tried a G425 Max and we just didn't get along so I was fitted for a Titleist TSI3 and that was a huge win for me.  So in conclusion if I can buy a product that sounds , feels and performs better than what I'm playing I'll plunk down the $$$$ .

This may be my favorite topic I've seen in a long time after reading the first reviews and finding many like-minded people who have the same gosh darn question why are so many people obsessed with the sound of the driver to where they put that before so many other more important factors?

It's been out of control for a long time.

Do we want our driver to sound good, yeah sure...

But where is that on the list of importance to help you hit more Fairways?

focus on the things that are actually relevant to their score I don't know let's go with driver weight sweet spots forgiveness contact swing speeds and maybe finding the Fairway every once in awhile...

So you can actually shoot lower scores.

And let's be honest a previous commenter hit the nail on the head most people worried about this sound first and foremost either have way too much time on their hands or they're probably the type who should be spending money on lessons rather than worrying about the sound of a driver good grief

I'm still in the g410 LST and it's an absolute game changer and Fairway finder after avoided ping for most of my adult life like the plague

I wouldn't give that driver up to save my life with the hazardous blue TX shaft PVD version.

When I started hitting three two or three more Fairways per round I got back to my former College playing days to where I was easily breaking 75 no sweat on a bad day.

Guys I don't care if my paying g410 sounded like a wet elephant fart or a squeaking trumpet every time I step up with my Fairway finder and hit 285-300.

I'm worried about the scorecards the feel and forgiveness of a driver whether it can hit the Fairway.

Enough with the ad nauseam over worrying about what a driver sounds like.

Worry about where the damn thing goes get a fitting and lose the ego about what it sounds like.

The Ping engineers and Club makers clearly know what they are doing and how to make a proper Club.

Are these the same guys who show up to the mud b0g in a two-wheel drive truck?

No! I have to stay on the pavement otherwise I'll get stuck but damn does my new exhaust sound good haha

Counter to the "people shouldn't worry about sound"…

Some people find that sound is their number one feedback device. This makes it at least as important as tactile feel(edit: for some).

A pleasant sound helps you find a groove. A groove is good practice.

Some people like loud cars. Many more don't. That's why car engineers worry so much about sound. There has to be enough sound for someone with a big engine to feel like they are getting that power. If you have a crap Corvette and you get out of a drive with your ears ringing, it's not that fun to *own*. Maybe 10 minutes running around is awesome, but if you get wary of the noise of something you own, you end up not being as satisfied with it.

Just because your priority isn't sound doesn't mean that it's not a legitimate #1 to others.

Sound can't be your number one feedback device on a modern driver because they all sound the same throughout the entire driver face these days.

no matter where you hit it in the head it's a consistent sound..

Haha these aren't persimmon Woods we're talking here...

Nobody plays a balatta and a 300cc anymore.

Although I did and that's how I can tell you.

Your feedback should always be tactile first and foremost especially on a driver.

These aren't irons were talking about either. You can clearly hear if an iron is struck flush or not... it's the difference between one of the most beautiful sounds in golf and one of the worst fat shots..

a modern driver with the Sweet Spot the size of Texas all sound the same no matter where you strike it...

The sound will vary from driver to driver of course.

But in that driver it will be pretty consistent no matter where you strike it these days.

The sound is uniform but the feel oh no it's not!

Your hands will tell you everything you need to know and more ask Ben Hogan.

I don't buy that argument the people are asking about sound for practice feedback...

Comee on now.

People are asking about sound because they want their drivers to sound "good" "nice" and "sweet"....

The only way that should ever be high on your priority is if you're such a good ball Striker you know you're hitting the Fairway with whatever driver you have in hand and have little else to worry about..

People rag on the sound of ping drivers all the time and they need to move on.

The name is PING!

That's the sound the drivers make heck that's even the sound the putters used to make and where it all originated!

WJack13, your point is flawed. When performance is pretty much the same in most drivers, falling back to sound, looks, and feel is a valid decision maker. I think ping is a great company.  When you can get a rogue max, tsr2, or sim2 max that perform the same but sound better it's an easy choice.

And yes there is data that shows the g425 is not necessarily the end all be all for performance. The TSi2 beat it for accuracy in the website that shouldn't be named test.

I have some issues with that websites testing, but for 2022 the G425 max was the most wanted and #1 in accuracy. Titleist didn’t crack the top 5 for accuracy.

Woody your point is very flawed and so is your reading comprehension

I'm not referencing any tests nor any websites data tests nor have any clue why you would speak to me about any of the such..

I'm speaking towards one point and one point only.

A huge over evaluation tendency on a factor which affects performance zero percent!

What matters is can you hit it straight and can you repeat that.

You choose the driver which can do those the most often. If you want to add Length in there that would be great too.

Sound effects none of those.

Your point is flawed again because you just listed a few three main determining factors in buying a driver yes?

Two of them matter and the one which doesn't matter or affect performance is sound that is literally the point of my entire post people need to worry about what effects performance more !

Wooderson, If anything is flawed it's your reading comprehension skills

Also did you really just tell us all drivers are the same and then tell us they all sound look and feel different....

Woody?

Bag of toasty

I think we found the 20 handicap golfer who's worried about sound over performance.

Haha

Yep most all modern drivers sound the same no matter where you hit them on the club face...

Again we're not talking persimmon here ..

I'm not really sure how bad your swing is and if you have dents on the top of your crown ?

but I guaran dam tee you if you were to close your eyes you wouldn't know which balls I'd hit off the toe or The Sweet Spot of my G410..

Again I don't know how bad you're missing buddy...

But I have playing Partners tell me all the time good ball or you got that one good while it's still in the air and without blinking an eye or taking my eye off the ball i say,

Hell no, big toe miss...

They sure couldn't tell by sound until it lands and I'm 10 yd behind where I've been all day...

You feel that kind of stuff.

Again how bad are you missing and are you aware of how big the sweet spot is on my modern driver...

Not that much difference in sound these days off of driver face
