Once had one shoe nicked and had to drive back in my golf shoes with spikes removed. Posh club too.

Now that’s just criminal.  I’d rather have both taken.  Just one is some kind of mind game.

Odd things happen: at my home club, one visitors day, my blue sweater disappeared from on top of my locker. One year later, also on visitors day, the sweater re-appeared on the same spot. Probably picked up accidentally then returned.

I suspect the shoe was picked up accidentally and the culprit may have returned it. This club was a favourite of visitors, including myself. Being c 40 miles from home I didn’t recheck.

I have similar luck.

3 years ago during the club championship I left my pitching wedge somewhere on the course.  I recall hitting it into the 5th hole. A great shot.  And then putting it back in my bag.  I was walking with a push cart.  Somewhere on the back 9 I missed it.  I sent a buddy spectator back to look etc. no trace. I was pretty confident somebody would turn it in.  But it never resurfaced.  And it’s so odd.

this was a ping blueprint.  It had the face destroyed.  As in it was totally used up.  Rusty.  A modus 130 X shaft.  Playing 3/4 an inch over standard. With a built up midsized grip.  “ go- rilla “ specs as my buddy calls it.   Worth all of 26$ on eBay.  I mean it was only worth something to me. And some jack wagon kept it.

This is the kind of assumption shared by members of "decent to high end private" clubs. Those who have or continue to work in such clubs - particularly locker room attendants - know differently.

And I will keep operating on that assumption since I have yet to be bit the the locker room shoe bandit. Am I going to leave my watch or wallet unlocked? No. But I am not worried about my shoes. Perhaps I will change my stance if I have to drive home barefoot.

I’ve a better one: I joined a seaside club without a pro shop but consulted itself posh and rapidly discovered clubs left on the course were left behind the bar until claimed. Nothing strange about that but wait: members could take out these clubs for a trial.

Thereafter, wherever I am after finding clubs on the course, I retain the club and leave a note with my contact info.

This sounds like a reasonable approach and you've always shown yourself to be a reasonable person. I mean, who the hell wants to steal someone else's shoes?

But, having been a locker room attendant, when something goes missing it tends to be a tough scenario for the employees. Most members assume that none of their peers would ever be responsible...and you can guess where that leads.

Having said all of this, it was always pretty obvious who the douchbags were among the members. If thievery did ever happen, eventually they would be found out and (usually) quietly shown the door.

Wanted to hear people’s opinions on having to use the locker room to put on your golf shoes. This rule seems to be less common now, but I understand that changing in the parking lot can look unprofessional especially at nicer private courses.

For years, I held memberships at two high-end private clubs.  It's NOT less common, all depends on where you live and level of club.  Both my clubs still have it written in their charter, members and guests are required to put on shoes or cloths in locker rooms, NOT the parking lot.  At both clubs and other private clubs I frequent, security will show up and politely ask people to use the locker room.  I've seen it where an obstinate guest got lippy with security, so he was escorted off property, lost his tee time and future access.

Our general thought was equated to people at parks and beaches changing cloths in the parking, or next to their parked cars on streets.  It's simply not an attractive sight.

Because you may not like something or think it's old fashion, doesn't mean we have to change to accommodate you.  If people have issues with rules like that, fine.... Go elsewhere.

As for shoes left unattended in locker rooms and go missing, though infrequent, Kleptomaniacs and mentally trouble members exist even at better clubs.  We also had a bought of B&E in our gated facility, with security.  In the end, it was kids of a very prominent member.   The F&B manager at my last club for eight years kept a bottle of my choice of Single Malt behind the bar, just for me, it was always replenished.  Weird stuff can happen, but it's an exception, rather than a rule.   I left my shoes on the counter, with our attendant, sometimes for a week, as did other members, nothing ever happened.

As long as I know the rules going in, I’m ok. It seems pretty silly to get upset over where to change shoes. One question; What happens to shoes in locker rooms where all the lockers are sold out?

Yeah so far I have lost 1 thing at my club, it was a scotty USA HC, I am fairly certain some member picked it up on the course and kept it. I rarely ride, but when I do I always forget my range finder in the cart and it's always found its way back to me. All is well until it isn't

Most guests took their street shoes back to their cars, others got an unassigned locker from our attendant.  I forgot how many lockers we had, but there were plenty, they were never all rented.

We didn't get upset when people attempted to change shoes in the parking lot, we just didn't allow it.  It was, still is, a value of ours.  You could say we were of the mind, give an inch, they take a mile.  So charter rules are enforced.  Each private club has a charter filled with rules; written by founders, later agreed upon/voted on by membership.  Recently I was a guest at two private clubs on a golf trip, both clubs were very clear about the rules.  I was told by the member, about the parking lot shoe rule and locker.

That rule is rather common and enforced at most nicer country clubs here in SOCA, Maui and TX.  Having been on our club's Interclub Match play teams, we visited other pvt clubs to compete.

Maybe wear some nicer shoes. 🙂

Try leaving out some Jordan concord 11 lows for 5 hours unattended in a locker room. Anyone under 50 would be tempted to walk off with those.

No jeans on main level at my club no hats indoors.  I’ve never heard of this calf high sock thing though, that seems strange and I’m not sure I’d belong somewhere that had that as a rule. Seems stupid who wants to wear shorts and look like your grand father wearing high socks

I’ll happily follow any rules that are in place. It’s their place.

But it does seem rather silly to have to carry my golf shoes into the locker room, change, and then carry my regular shoes back out to my car. If a locker is not provided. And that does lend credence to the opinion that if that rule is in place, then there needs to be place to leave your street shoes. A controlled place, not just under a bench.

That being said, on my next trip to place, if no one is actually cleaning my shoes before I head out onto the course  then I’d probably just change shoes inside my vehicle. Because I believe that if the truth came out, that rule is more about appearances than something coming to the course on shoes. They just don’t like the picture of people sitting on the edge of their trunk changing.

It certainly does happen….even at higher end clubs.  It’s also possible it was picked up and they just forgot to return it after a bit of time.  I had something similar happen a few years back.  When riding I have a bad habit of setting the rangefinder on top of the cooler when hitting the shot. And then, of course it falls off when I drive away.  Long story short it was a few holes before I realized it was missing and it was never returned….even with my name on it.
After a week or so I asked the head pro if I should put a message on the bulletin board saying I have the case if they want that as well.

In the U.K. the high sock thing is the norm. Probably also stops folk wearing all sorts of trashy short socks - hence our expression “ you silly old sock “.

There's nothing more unsightly or off putting than people changing clothes in the parking lot of the club you pay good money to be a member of. It's kind of a death by 1000 cuts application, it starts with changing shoes, then shirts, then pants, then who knows what next on the slippery slope. If you want to change your clothes and shoes in the parking lot, go play the local muni's instead.

I've heard that once people go beyond changing shoes, shirts and pants in the parking lot it really is a slippery slope.

Out of nowhere rock and roll music starts blaring, usually from a gigantic blue tooth speaker (She's My Cherry Pie by Warrant). Then get this, naked women appear from out of the blue.  A magic pole pops up and the next thing you know it's a full-blown strip club, right there in your Country Club parking lot. It's insane I know. Of course, drugs and alcohol are involved, it's pretty scary. Don't believe me? You should go check the muni parking lots to get a look at it for yourself, it's rough out there.

As fun as your hyperbole is, some people actually enjoy the status quo being maintained at the clubs they spend hard earned money to be a part of. I for one enjoy the rigorous dedication to etiquette you no longer find other places. And if I'd like to go play in Sunday scrambles where it's a beer per hole free for all, I'll shoot you a DM.

No hyperbole here...... Exactly why I don't associate with commoners. I just wanted to back up what you were saying, it's a slippery slope, and a scary one at that.

This is exactly what happened to my clubs parking lot during covid when we weren't allowed to use the locker room or even get a burger from the grill.
