I was just going by the pictures posted above of the process. Looked like a tamped base with broomed in sand to lock it to me. 

It’ll turn a sand trap into a pot bunker if you turn your back on it!!

I didn't read the entire thread, but it sounds like they're removing the "patio". That's great, because it looked very shiny and slick. Old people would have been falling and breaking hips by the thousands. It would have been a disaster of epic proportions.

Isn’t that left foot precariously close to a potentially crumbling bank? Is that bridge just a very large loose impediment or temporary IMO?  Are those burrowing animal holes on the opposite side?
