Would love to be a fly on the wall where they all voted that one in ,

in other board news we are reverting the design and we will no longer be having happy hour before voting on club issues in the future ...

After the outcry The St. Andrews Links Trust has reversed its decision and will remove the addition to the bridge. That escalated quickly.

One day after defending its move to install circular, stone-based formations on both sides of its iconic Swilcan Bridge, St. Andrews changed its mind Monday and said the patio-like structure will be removed. In a release at around 6:30 p.m. local time, the minders of the iconic course said they would be “unable to create a look which is in keeping with its iconic setting” and also cited “feedback” in their decision.

I am enjoying this thread.

Regarding my past observations and comments here at WRX in terms of very extensive art collections, I wish to provide a little insight as to perhaps why the circular entry path and landing area  was chosen.

Circle as a basic shape has always enchanted the human mind. Many mathematicians and philosophers considered it the most perfect of all geometric shapes, while theologians felt it supernatural or divine. For the artist, the mysterious circle was always a thing of beauty and a joy forever. For them, the mystery element combined with the aesthetic one, producing varied meanings in various semiotic conventions. Circles appear in paintings either as a circle themselves or as their derivatives such as the sun, the moon, and other stellar orbs, as wheels, sundials, clock faces, as domes, vaults, spiral stairs, circular paths and what not.

ever been around cows ?  People are alot like them in this way.  They’ll follow other cows anywhere.  And they’ll do it on the same path religiously.   Every pasture of more than 2-3 years has a cow trail.  It’s about 20 inches wide at most.  And they all use it.  This is the same.  The issue is traffic volume and the rehearsed and repeated circular traffic at the bridge for pics.

They’re called desire paths. And thanks for making my point I guess?

Lol. Leave it to the internet to Church up the name of a cow path.    Touché.  I had no idea the term desire path existed.  I simply was raised in a pasture and observed.

agree to disagree.  At any rate it no longer matters.  The golf world has made it right.

Kind of surprised they’d waste the stones. Why not have 2 guys spend 2 hours and just pick them up and haul them out.  They were just set with sand Broomed in.  Right ?  No need for the little backhoe etc.

That equipment was in the golf course shed along with all the mowers.

Standard equipment for all golf courses worth their salt....

I hardly think that St. Andrews is waiting for approval from this forum.

Let's not take ourselves too seriously.

I suggest they do bricks underneath for long term wear and cover it with artificial turf. When the turf wears out you just replace it. Make the approaches on both sides rectangular and a little wider than the bridge and you are done.

The rectangle will not work and don't call me done.

I’m aware. I was on a maintenance crew from 1995-1999. I’ve pulled 7 gang units mowing rough and mowed many greens before daylight.  Double walk mowed in front of a hooters tour event etc. I’m just saying.  Waste isn’t my thing.  And that’s using a chain saw to cut toast.
