Super Disappointing Mizuno Order Experience

mkidding

Recommended Posts

I ordered a custom set of Mizuno 923 Tour from PGATSS early May. After waiting over 6 weeks for the clubs, they are finally in. And guess what, they are nothing close to what I needed to order.

Length: ordered them std. length except from Pw, which I want 0.25in longer.

Came in all 0.25in longer, except from 7i, which is 0.5in longer

Lie: ordered 1 flat, came in std.

Loft: ordered 2 strong for 4-8, 1 strong for 9 and std for Pw

Came in all std, except form 7i which is 1 weak

Swing weight: ordered D3, came in all over the place from C9 to D1.5

Super super sad right now and honestly don't know what my options are. PGATSS told me that if I send them back, chance is Mizuno would still mess it up with a new set and it might take another 6-8 weeks

I would suggest finding a reputable builder or club repair person and have them build/adjust your irons to your specs. They can typically turn these around for you rather quickly. Unfortunately, they can’t really do anything for the shafts since you need them longer. You would have to send them back and hope or you’d need to replace them.

I just received a custom set of 923 HM irons, and they seem to all be .25” long as well give or take.  I forgot that Mizuno tends to build long, no matter what they say the standard length is.

Add to that, after taking them out on the course, they just seem to be a bit “off”, which I suspect is attributable to lofts and/or lies being off from spec.  They did come in at D3 with MMT 105, which would be a bit better for me slightly lighter with .25” off.

Despite the 7 weeks to receive them in the first place, I might reach out to Mizuno to see if I can send them in to get fixed/checked.

You ordered them through the PGASS, correct?  PGASS does loft lie adjustments, grips, etc.  I would ask them to fix them there.  They should and at no cost.  You ordered something from them they did not produce.  They made more than enough to cover they adjustments.  Worst case they charge for one grip to cut down the 7 iron.  I would ask and if they say not, tell them then you don't want them and your money back.  Be shocked of they don't make it right.

Just return them and buy a new set from a company that can get custom specs correct such as Titleist or Ping

Return the set to PGA SS for a full refund.

If I remember right, there was a time when Mizuno measured length to the grip cap line.  I don't know if they are still doing that, but at one point it made everyone feel like they got clubs that were too long.

They are definitely still doing something like that, as I have compared my new 923 HM set to several other standard length sets I have around, and the 923 HM are consistently .25” long compared to other OEMs at the “same” length.

I honestly don't want to wait another 6-8 weeks for these irons, and chances is they probably gonna mess it up again in some way

PGATSS offered to bend them to spec and to cut 0.25in off the longer clubs for free. Will let them do that

Chances is the SW will be way off, and I'll have to lead tape the crap out of them 😞

Will also measure to see how much weight I need to add to the head and maybe buy the weights and go to my local shop to get those done

Did they provide a build sheet and did it match what you requested? Based on all the errors they made I would definitely send them back, it will always be in the back of your mind that something is wrong with the clubs. You do have to have some flexibility on club length since it's well known that there is no standard in measuring it, as long as they are consistent in the set. You must have another set of irons you can use, six weeks is nothing in the scheme of things.

Man, situation sucks and I'm sorry it happened to you. I've heard the same story about Mizuno more than a few times over the last few months. Amazing that Mizuno isn't catching more flak when you can pay Golfworks $250 for a perfectly built set of Maltby irons.

My understanding is that Mizuno's are incredibly nice, so I hope it gets sorted to your satisfaction!

Most recent update:

Got the clubs back from PGATSS - they did what they could, and now I have 4-9 at the desired lie/loft/length, but at C7-C8.5 SW, while the Pw is at D2.5 (which is within range of what I want)

PGATSS told me that they normally don't do SW adjustment, but if I can figure out what tip weight I need and bring them, they'll do the reshafting for me to make it work.

Overall I think I'm happy with PGATSS' handling with this issue. I'm just very disappointed that Mizuno couldn't get it right after the whole 7 weeks of waiting

You paid serious coin for new clubs to your specs from mizuno.  Not some rebuild job by some big box golf store worker.  I'd get a refund now and cut your losses.

This is how I feel. If I pay $1,000+ for a set of irons, they better be perfection out of the box. The only part of the order they got right was the type of club. That crap would be refunded so fast if it were me.

I agree with the others that I think I'd mess with the refund and the hassle of getting something else rather than have $1000 in a set of irons I felt was a hodge podge of remedies.  And why does the PGATSS need you to figure out the tip weight you need? Is that beyond the capabilities of their club builder?

Crappy situation they got you in. Sorry it hasn't been the normal enjoyment getting new clubs usually is.

Based on my local PGATSS, way beyond their capabilities.
