Pro tournament attire

Watching the tournament last weekend, I noticed a stark difference in attire.  While Scheffler had s simplistic Nike swoosh on his shirt, hat and shoes, Hovland looked like a NASCAR driver.  How many logos is too much?

I believe Nike pays extra to not have other sponsors on their apparel, that changed recently with Tom Kim who had his AP sponsor on the sleeve of his Nike polo.

 

It's all going to depend on the apparel sponsor in what they want and the player as well. But if you're getting paid to have a logo on you these guys will since it's part of their livelihood.

I prefer Scheffler's look to Viktor's, but if I were a player I'd tell my agent to make as much money off of my shirt as possible. If a company wants to give a big check to be the only logo - great; if not, load me up.

I would wear whatever for money, hell I'd shave your logo into my head if the price was right.  Doubt any of them care when they see that money hitting their account.

Arnold Palmer endorsed more products outside of golf than probably anyone and wore a plain shirt.

I bet they don't know what half those sponsors do but neither would I again if the money hits the account.

Being a professional golfer is expensive. It's not like a Hockey player who has all his travel covered by the team along with meals, PT regiment, media person ect. As a professional golfer if I don't make a cut I don't make any money. The sponsor money helps cover all my playing expenses, caddie costs, and basic life stuff (Rent, Car, utilities, etc.) 

 

As a company who is looking to get the most for it's advertising dollars, I am going to spend more to get a top tier name. Look at Jordan Spieth. He has 4 deals Titleist, Under Armour, AT&T and Super Stroke. 

 

For me having been a sponsored athlete in the past, I only would promote products that I actually like to use.

A pro career is very limited compared to how long the average joe works. It makes sense to make the most amount of money possible anyway you can. I don't know about having enough sponsors on my shirt to look like a NASCAR driver but you'd definitely see stuff on my polo, hat, and my bag if i was on tour

To add on to this, it also changed with Nelly adding sponsors to her Nike partnership as well.

I think the 'Swoosh Only' rule went out the door when they stopped making clubs/balls. Off the top of my head, Jason Day also had a sponsor on his sleeve as well.

99% of Hovland's appearance issues would disappear if he would dump JL. 

 

They have made him look embarrassingly bad on some big stages this year.

I don't think it went out the door, just sleeve only. I don't think you'll see another sponsor on the chest of a Nike sponsored golfer.

Jason Day had the logo on his sleeve when he first moved to Nike, but they waited the contract to run out; I recall that they were able to buy out or get rid of the other shirt sponsors with the exception of that one.

 

I think Nike attempts to get their athletes to Swoosh only, and will allow some existing contracts to run out.

 

So let's look at Joohyung Kim for instance. Joined in 2023, and all of his previous shirt logos are gone with the exception of the sleeve. Almost the same situation as Jason Day, where he had the sleeve logo when first joining Nike. I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually goes away too.

 

Nelly Korda is similar where she just joined in 2023. I'd be interested to see in a year or two of her multi-year deal if it's the same deal: existing contracts that they immediately can't get rid of run through their contract, and then from then on, it's Swoosh Only.

I would go with the clean look, chest and 1 sleeve is enough, especially if I was established pro. I remember Furyk was the worst multi shirt logo offender, terrible look.

I hope the players figure out what is enough for sponsor logo's.

If a company approaches you and says "we'll pay you 100k to put out logo on your shirt" I doubt you'll say no and neither are these guys.

So how many is too many pro ? 5 down each side of the shirt front and back, both collars a couple on each sleeve ? 18-20 work for you ?

Depends on how much money they're offering and how comfortable someone is. Some can be 2 some can be 20 that's the beauty of individual choice you can pick what you want not what others want.

I bet every single person out there would load the entire shirt up for the right price.  That's promised money that requires them to do almost nothing for it other than  wear the logo and show up to the tournament.  If they do play well, that money probably increases based on TV exposure.  If you're playing professional sports, you have a limited time to maximize your earnings and you have no idea when the paychecks may stop coming in be it loss of skill, injury etc, so it would be awfully dumb to turn anything down because you want a "clean" look.
