Anyone switch to LAB putters?

Recommended Posts

I had a putting lesson today with my 13 year old Scotty Cameron Newport and was shocked out easy it was to keep a LAB putter going straight. All I had to do was think about pace. I am kind of smitten for one of these now, but I hate to ditch my old scotty that scored me an eagle on the old course. Those putters are also expensive + fitting. Has anyone made the switch and not looked back?

I bought the first LAB, the Directed Force.  I did the online fitting.  Used it for about three years.  Which is a long time for a putter in my bag.  Switched, then ended up getting a Blad2.  Liked it okay.  Stayed in the bag maybe 3/4 of a season.  Been using a Scotty Phantom X5.5 for about a year and a buddy handed me his new LAB LINK1.  Made the first 4 20 footers in a row.  And I had been putting like a blind. monkey.  Game over, had to buy one.  I know my length and lie so I found a "second" on their website for $50 less than the non-blems.  It is the second "blem" have bought and neither could I find the blem.

This one is staying in the bag for a while.  I have made more birdies with this putter in the past month than I did my Scotty the previous four months.

I’m on my third l  at  broomstick, not because I didn’t get on with it, but everyone I played with wanted to buy them. Helps me start the ball on line and the 3-6 footers go into the hole.

I switched from a Scotty Futura to a Blad (not enough MOI for me and the variety of green speeds I play) then to a Mezz. Torque balanced designs are simply superior. The last thing you want is a putter trying to rotate on it's own during a stroke and by different amounts depending on the length of the putt.

If I miss a putt, I want it to all be on me. Knowing and feeling the putter trying to rotate and me fighting it just seems like extra struggle making things harder. I don't need harder.

This right here is spot on. I haven't taken out on the course but I putted at the super store. And it felt like it eliminated variables in the stroke. Obviously it's still dependent on the user, but I hit the same putt 10 times in a row. I gotta get used to it cause I noticed I kept pulling it left of my target. But was also my first time using one.

what improvements have u seen with the broomstick versus the 2.1???

It's definitely easier on the back. I've found that I don't manipulate the Mezz as much as the 2.1 either, if that makes sense. I was finding that with the 2.1, I really had to focus on keeping the hands out of the stroke. With the Mezz, that's not an issue anymore.

Anyone try to get a Mezz Max in 38 length so it could be used as a counter balanced putter?

I seem to putt better at 38 length but would need a 17 length putter grip installed instead of the default one.

When I was measured online for my Mezz I was told lie angle was 69 and 34 length.

After testing with other putters, 38 length is my ideal length. Would the Mezz Max head have to have heavier weights because of the 38 length and longer grip?

Any thoughts?

the minimum weight would be 380g like Ricki's putter to create heavy weight at that bottom end, according to the callaway rep....all their counter balance putters are heavy

I've tried 3 times now to switch to a LAB and I just cant get used to their designs. I haven't tried the link yet though.  They do put a nice roll on he ball for sure, but I'm finding it harder to aim and line up my Mezz than my current Seemore.  I find short putts harder to drain now too. I hate the grips aswell.  For a number of reasons the Link may be the answer for me.

I will give it some more time though...I think its worth a shot to see if it turns out for me .

I switched from a spider tour x that was in the bag for 2 or 3 seasons.  Started with a 2.1 a friend let me borrow.  Inside 5 feet it was automatic, but I struggled outside of 10 feet.   It was just too big.   Ended up with a mezz max with BGT shaft and it is amazing.   I hit my lines much more consistently, the only issue I have with it is distance control from time to time.   Inside 5 feet it is just as good as the 2.1 but much much, more manageable on putts from 10-20 feet.   I have made significantly more putts in that range than with the 2.1 or the spider.

Get fit, and go make putts.

Gamed a Mezz Max the entire season. Honestly hasn’t been anything earth shattering. Had a few fantastic rounds, a couple worse than I had ever putted in my entire life, and a ton in between. To me it has been just another putter with a different feel.

Last season I switched putters frequently, trying to find “The One”. Decided to stick with the Max, to see if gaming one putter longer term would help. Not to mention it was a big investment, so wanted to give it a fair shake.

I had a old copper beryllium ping anser putter and a seemore FGP that I would flip back and forth between. Always hated mallet putters whenever I tried them. I read about the L.A.B. on here a year and a half ago and then, literally a day later, ran into a guy on the putting green that had a DF 2.1. I tried it and it felt very weird but I was encouraged by that....I could feel the technology/weighting in the stroke and I was totally fighting it because I was so used to closing the blade on an arc. I thought about that DF 2.1 for weeks after that. "It's way too expensive for a PUTTER", "It will look crazy in my bag", "I never know how to aim a mallet", "The forward press feels weird" blah blah. After a month of this, I bought one off ebay that was in my spec. Got it and struggled immediately with aiming it inside 10 feet. Did all the drills from the YouTube page and committed to sticking with it for a month without going back to my old putters. By about week 3 I had it. Now, let me be clear, me "having it" is not like I am cruising around in 26 putts every round. I was a bad putter before and now I am a decent putter. The DF 2.1 is super stable through impact and lag putting is better because the ball comes out at the same speed most anywhere on the face.

I was initially hard on the DF 2.1 because (a) I didn't like the look of it and (b) I expected WAY TOO MUCH out it. I thought I was going to be making EVERYTHING from 10 ft and in and there is just no putter that is going to do that. Ultimately, I am making more putts of all lengths than I was before. It can help you and I think it is a minor miracle how it has improved my putting but it didn't turn me into a birdie machine. I think it is a putter that will help more people than not but you have to be committed to the change.

CONS of the DF 2.1: These might be obvious but it takes up a ton of space in the bag. Both the grip and the head. It gets a lot of attention. Also, I struggle a *little* using this thing off the green due to its sheer size. All these cons are rather minor since it is definitely a net positive on my game.

I had a Mezz for 3-4 months and I just couldn't putt inside 10 feet with it. I did all the drills but I just couldn't get to where I was comfortable in that range and then it got worse. I've never putted better with anything outside 10 feet though so it was obviously me and not the putter. The tech makes sense and one day I might do it again and just commit to it 100%.

Mezz max armlock fit over time to me by a guy who’s written volumes on putting.  2 months of commitment , and it’s second nature now. I have never felt this confident.  Anybody who plays with me knows it’s a different world.    For me it’s about curing a couple things.  I added loft at impact. Causing random strikes low or high on the face.  This cures that.  And it also forces a crouched setup… this gets me in a position to see where I’m going.  I’m lead eye dominant.  So its hard for me to see down the line without turning my head. The other thing is that it simply is easier. Doesn’t rotate in my hands. Just comes down the line and the ball starts where I’m aiming.  Putting has become easy.   Nobody here has ever read me saying that.  Ever.

  • 2 weeks later...

Bought my first Mezz but with a lie at 78 degrees, it was too upright. Switched to a Link 1 graphite at a lie angle of 74 degrees. Learning curve to use it but a really nice putter. On a whim I saw a custom Mezz steel shaft at 73degrees, originally purchased by a club pro. Comparing it to my Link 1 and deciding which one I like better. Thinking of changing the grip of the Mezz to a conventional grip but not sure it would work. Has anyone else put a conventional grip on a Mezz putter?
