Ping i530 Leaked Photo

just had a fitting and tried out all the new Ping irons.  Not bagging the big G730, but they are not quite for me.  Easy to hit, but the footprint was too big to my eye. The Blueprints felt great - but it was the i530's that got the nod. Look good - feel good - hit it good. Of course that's just me - but I was highly impressed. Been a while since I had Ping irons in the bag, but this was an easy decision.

Did you compare with the i230? If so, how did they stack up?

I used to play the i230 irons and regret changing out of them and trying several brands since. IMHO you will find these i530's even better than the 230's. I was getting more distance, but the lofts assist there. Feel was better to me. Definitely recommend people give these a try.

The shaft choice surprised me because I've been a graphite shaft user for quite a while and expected to maybe go with the Axiom at 75g, but the Dynamic Gold 105's married up so well that I just had to order those.  Tried about 6 shafts and none were disappointing, but got the best consistency with the heavier steel.

If the jacked lofts are a big deal to someone whats wrong with just ordering them in the retro spec?

Aside from the obvious distance loss is there a disadvantage to this im not aware of?

It's not so much the jacked lofts are an issue, in and of itself.  Everyone can adapt to a 6 iron being labelled as a 7 and that really is no big deal in terms of first world problems.  What I don't like though is the misinformation that a 29 degree 7 iron is hit further than a 33 degree 7 iron; therefore the 33 degree 7 iron set is trash.

I've hit the i530 and they are fine clubs.  I'm still butt hurt that Ping couldn't just take the i500 form factor exactly as is and add foam/goo to greatly improve the sound and feel.  But I digress.  Going retro loft is always an option but then you take an already high bounce club and introduce more bounce.  Ping just literally hits the heads with a hammer to bend them.  There are not different molds for standard/power/retro - they are all the same heads.

Looking at the i530 set , I don't think there is an easy solution, at least for me.  There is a 22 degree 5 iron and a 47 degree GW.  What I like to do with Pings is play within their specs.  So to your point, Std/Retro/Power because I have a belief they designed the clubs to be at their best with either of those specs.  Retro loft on the GW is 47.5 degrees which is pointless vs 47 Std.  So what I would probably end up doing is making my own spec.  50/45/40 for GW 2, GW, PW and flowing that down thru the 5 iron.  Yes I would buy a second GW and bend it to 50 (or as close to as I could).

The i530 is just a weird, in between set of specs, IMO.  If I buy that 2nd GW and increase that loft to 50, the bounce jumps to 16.  Does that matter at all?  I don't know.  I did just that with my i59 but those bounces were lower and that worked perfectly fine.  Not a fan of a specialty GW at 50 as it's a full swing club for me.

It's a bit OCD for sure but with iron sets now reaching 2020 PXG level pricing as the norm, my days of rolling the dice on a few different sets a year is gone.  I did order the i530 4 and 5 to replace my icrossover 3 and i230 4 iron so I'm not opposed to the concept of i530.  I just don't know if I want a full set of them.

Same problem with my new T200’s and their 48* gap wedge. I’m playing 52-56 vokeys. Could easily go 53 as well (52 or 54 bent 1 degree). I do like that manufacturers aren’t going 5 degrees loft spacing through the middle of the set to account for the loft jacking because that doesn’t help scoring.

I just ordered a set in 6-U wedge which is basically like 5-PW.  Problem is, I have a like new  Glide 4.0 54/58 and will likely now need a 52/56 instead.  I almost went retro loft, but was afraid of more bounce and the short irons are still very strong, even in retro spec.  I need more distance at the longer end not the short end. Plus, I need more distance and figured I’d stay with Ping standard lofts since they put a lot of engineering into this stuff.

I just picked up a set of i525's on the bay that were like new. That's the only reason why I didn't want the New i530 being the lofts are so jacked up, and I like a 54 sand iron.

Ah I didn't know that regarding the T200.  I just checked the Apex Pro specs and they are the (I don't know what to call it) "traditional" players distance specs.  50 GW to 22 4 iron.  Debatable if the Apex Pro belongs in the same category.  I hit it when I hit the i530 and T200 but I didn't pay attention to ball results vs i530 vs T200 as I didn't love the Apex Pro.

As I was typing that I checked out the Apex 21 irons and those go from 48 to 21 so perhaps that is going to be the new standard if you will?  Callaway refers to the Pro as "players performance" and 21 as "players distance" so I guess I have my answer.

with the UW being 46*, I might go with the following wedge configuration:

46*

50* (full swing)

54* (high bounce, for sand)

58* (low bounce, tight lies, around the green)

so 5 wedges in the bag.

what do you guys think?

Alternative would be:

46*

52*

58* (low bounce, tight lies, around the green)

but is the 52* ok for sand?

Since I like my Glide 4.0 54/58 combo I may go with a S159 50 degree to fill in the gap.  Although it’s only 3 degrees off the U wedge my thinking is the i530 is a juiced iron and the wedges are not.  Maybe the gap will be perfect, maybe I’ll never use the 50.

Although I don't know specifically for the i530, generally with irons of this class there's a transition so that the short iron faces aren't hot.   Their lofts aren't stronger because the faces are hot, it's to try to have consistent gaps through the set.

I remember when a Cleveland 588 could be had in 53.   I can see that loft coming back.

Interesting take between 2 distance players irons:

I'm IN for the i530, 5 to PW with the Power Spec and the AWT 2.0 matte black shafts. Been holding off the i525 which I really liked for these i530

Can't wait 👍😎

Saw that as well. What I found interesting was he said, if you typically hit low on the face, the p790 would be better. as someone who hits low on the face, maybe I should try the p790's next time I'm at my local shop.

As a former owner of the P790, that speedslot on the sole DEFNITELY helps. However, the P790 was notorious for the chilli hot flyers as well. Just be aware of that but TM may have fixed it in this years Gen.

I went 6-U wedge and decided to go Alta CB graphite stiff shafts since I’m not getting any younger.  I do really like the AWT 2.0 shafts though.  I bought through 2nd Swing so I can play them and return for full credit if the graphite doesn’t work out.  If that’s the case I’ll order another set with the AWT shafts.

Great minds think alike. I am currently gaming the I230’s.  Just ordered the I530’s 6-UW with Axiom 105’s from Will Peoples.

I agree! lol

Please let me know your thoughts but I have a feeling I won't be able to hold out much longer.

Just out of curiosity, what made you go i530? is there something about the i230's you didn't like?

For me, initially, I wanted a little more forgiveness in the long irons and started looking for a i525 or G430 5 iron but then saw that they just released the i530 and the rest is history. lol

Nothing wrong with the I230’s. Getting older and suffering through back issues. My strike pattern isn’t what it used to be. Looking for a little more forgiveness without going to the G range plus the extra distance is a bonus. Hopefully, switching to Axiom will help as well. My miss is a toe strike and judging from the limited reviews, that doesn’t bother the I530 much.

In this thumbnail, the i530 reminds me a lot of the look of the G410 Crossover.
