Forgiving high bounce sand wedge w/o hot face?

Recommended Posts

My Zx5 MkII irons and I guess also the newly acquired AW have hot faces. That’s something I’d like to avoid in the sand wedge to be purchased (I think, but this is winter pondering and things might turn 360° until spring…).

Searching the internet for a forgiving, wide sole, solid head, high bounce SW. Say 56° and 12° or even 14° bounce. Looked around everywhere and I’m generally confused by the two features cavity and hollow, and how these words are being used. Makes me wonder if some mean their wedge is a CB or if it is a hollow head (meaning with a pop to the face), or both.

My local shop won’t let me test wedges indoors as they have a small gap in the nets between the sealing and wall…

The obvious option (and what I’m leaning towards) is the CBX Zipcore, but that has a pop to the face, right?

Any other suggestions? I would like to stay with major brands.

I play the ZX5 Mk ii 5 through AW. At 54 and 58 I have the Callaway Jaws Raw in S Grind. I know there is a wider sole version just not sure what grind it is.

I chose these because they are slightly larger at address than most other specialty wedges, which I think equates to a little more forgiveness on full shots. The larger profile also matches the slightly larger profile of the ZX5 irons vs say a more traditional players iron.

Thanks, I will look for that larger version or the one you have.

also interesting you went for a 54 sw. I am somewhat considering that since the 50dgr AW probably plays more like a solid 48 or so, opening a gap to a solid 56. In the other hand im not skilled enough to open up the face and a 56 might fit my home bunkers best

Just an FYI, the deflection angle of a wedge pretty much negates “hotness” from any design, regardless of construction. Not enough compression vs spin/launch.

I'm using my second set of CBX's.  No pop and plenty of help on "less" than pure shots.  I think they're second to none within this type of wedges.

I have two of them, they are solid face construction.  No real pop to the face.  If one is a purist, they might not feel like a traditional wedge, but I don't notice it.

I play both CBX Zipcore 44 & 48.
And Mizuno ES21 54 & 58.
I bought a CBX Zipcore 54 to try against my ES21 54W 12* and preferred the Mizuno.

It looks like the S23 that replaced my ES21 only goes up to 10* bounce. But the ES21 can be found for cheap now.

If you need high bounce and manipulate the face a lot the callaway X-grind is good but requires decent control on your delivery. It has a lot of bounce near the leading edge for a square faced shot but has a fairly aggressive amount of relief everywhere else. I haven't played a vokey T-grind but the X in the callaway looks a lot like a higher bounce T. I've had the X and like it but prefer and find the W easier to hit and works better for me. I still find for the conditions I play in that the W is still playable with an open face but I am certainly more steep than neutral with wedges. The Vokey D grind to me plays similar to the W in callaway but with heel and toe relief. The vokey F grind while having 14 degrees of stated bounce doesn't play as high bounce as one might think based on just the number. It is a narrower sole than something like the W in the callaway. I haven't played it but in comparing side by side Cleveland's full sole in the rtx6 looks to live somewhere in between a Vokey F and Callaway W, erring closer to the F.

We're going on a Minimalist Adventure who knows were we'll end up:

Yes, 50 AW plays more like an iron. 54/58 works well for me

Cbx wedges are amazing. No pop and an insane amount of backed in forgiveness.

vokey D grind is great too.  Lots of bounce but with heel toe relief to manipulate the face a bit.

absolute goat high bounce option is the TM Hi Toe Bigfoot.  If you can find one they are automatic.

No wedge has a hot face. At lofts above 35 degrees, the contact is glancing and there is almost no technology out there that will lead to increased ball speed. Could just be the increased forgiveness is maintaining ball speed on mishits.

I'd recommend the CBX, Ping Glide, and Mizuno S23. Ping and Mizuno can provide forgiveness while still appealing to people who want a traditional appearance at address.

Look for wedges with the softest forging material, like 1018/1020, even my Vokey SM9 wedges have a soft face.   It's difficult to find wedges without hot faces because so many people like that.
