What gram weight do you play in your 3 wood shaft?

Thx all. Sounds like most in mid 80 above range have SS greater than 105+.

Wonder how much a difference 6 grams really makes. Part of me says get 85, but I think 79 is more for me. I can hit my 3 wood around Max 250 yarda on a pure shot so not a big hitter.
It may only be 6 grams, but its percentages. Your looking at a 7-10% increase in weight. Translate that into a potential 7-10% decrease in swing speed and/or distance. Although, for some the added weight may be slower but improves tempo and ball striking consistancy, thus maintaining or even improving distance with accuracy. Just depends what helps the club find the ball.
The 7-10% increase in weight would be of the shaft weight not the total weight of the club; figure 210 gram headweight, 85 gram shaft, 50 gram grip, we'll say 8 grams for grip tape, ferrule, epoxy and we're at 353 grams or 348 grams, that's a 1.4% difference; 100% agree w/ the rest of your statement:); liter clubs don't automatically lead to increased distances.

Anyone know how much weight is lost per inch cut on a shaft.

ie 46" the weight is 79, what would it be when cut to 43" for 3 wood. do people account for this when determining shaft weight ?
Well, the butt end usually has more material per incriment than the tip, so it should be slightly heavier. I used to just go with the overall gram weight divided by the length in inches (as long as it's not a tip heavy bimatrix or WilsonStaff half-and-half). Most of the shafts I have worked with have been very close to the 2 to 2.5 grams per inch range, and for me that number has usually come out very close to cut weight.

That 79 gram shaft at 46" is roughly 1.7 gram per inch. So at say, 42" cut that should play in the 72 gram range + or - . If it is actually 79 grams, and ends up being 42" cut, of course. I finally bought a small scale and now I just weight them, but I was surprised how close I was when just estimating.

Thanks so much for taking the time to post this. Very informative!!

Thx all. This is helpful.

I have a pro force V2 70 g something in a G10, but am looking to get 120 with Kyoshi and am torn between 75 or 85 version. Actual is 79 and 85. Leaning towards 79 Gram.

I use the 65/69 Gram version in driver.
If you play 65/69 gr in the driver, then only 10 gr heavier in the 3 wood is what I recommend. Going to the 85 will be too heavy and result in a lower ball flight (typically) unless you have a very aggressive swing (fast tempo and transition from the top).

gqjeff has a ss of 88 and uses a rip 115xx tipped 2.5". I think he might have one laying around for you to try! :superman2: j/k. I'm seeing more and more pros go to lighter weights in their FW's and Hybrids. I'd say go lighter. Get all the SS you can achieve. And yes, 6-10 gms can make a big difference.

3-wood - Pro95 X tipped 1.25"
5-wood - GDI YSQst 95 Tour X tipped 2.5"

I've tried going lighter but I lose tempo and my swing goes off plane. The lightest I've been able to comfortably swing in a 3-wood was around 85g (Fuji VT80D). Pro95 is the shiznit for 3 woods for me. The YSQst 95 is real close when tipped a little extra. I've also used the 8M2 which was good but on the lighter side for me also.

757 speeder X, I have always liked a 75 gram 3 wood shaft.
Hey Wolfpack, can you tell me more about your 3 wood? I just picked up a new 757 and I was going to try it in a driver but you may have changed my mind......I never though of putting it in a 3W.

I just picked up a Titleist 913 fd 15* with the Phenom RIP 80 in stiff. It feels heavy to me, almost too heavy. I'm thinking of looking for the 70g version. My driver SS is about 106 with a smooth transition. Is this 3w shaft too much for me???

73g Diamana Blueboard. But I'm missing my Grafalloy Prolite already.
Dont know what model ProLite if it was the 3.5S or the 35S, but i made a compare for you of shafts you know, but no 73 Blueboard was in Tom Wishons Shaftprofiling software.

The PFC only model Grafalloy TOUR (The black), is in the middle of ProLite 3.5 and ProLite 35

Cheers Howard. Interesting info.
Stock is 2x R, 3x S and 4x X....i got your address :-)

To the topic - Woods depending on number and the players weight range as a hole, 3 Wood might use the same shaft as the driver, or both 5 and 10 grams above.

In general, a slow or smooth swinger who plays a 50 gram driver shaft cant handle a 70 gram 3W, so he is better of with a 50 to 55 gram as 3W, and 55 to 60 as 5W. The stronger the player, the higher shaft weight progression.

Just look at the hole spread out in your bag. If you play Dynamic Gold Irons, i doubt you play a 40 gram driver shaft and a 50 gram for woods. so even if the stronger player starts with a higher weighed driver shaft, his total weight progression is much larger than the slower or smoother swinger.

A typical DG iron player got a 65-75 grams driver shaft, up to his irons at 135 grams, a spread of up to 70 grams
The Mid aggressive swinger plays 55-65 gram driver shaft, up to 115 in irons, a average spread of 60 grams
The smooth swinger playing a 45-55 gram driver shaft, plays up to 95 grams in irons, a spread of up to 50 grams
Whatever works is right, but this is a general picture

True, good point. For me though, I just dont account total weight much, because those other variables I consider constant. Although you are technically more correct than I.

I have a Diamana Kai'li 70x (71g) in my RFX 3 wood. No problems with control... and it's LONG.

Driver swing speed in the 122-127 region.

My general rule of thumb is to go 10g heaver as the loft increases... 60-70 driver, 70-80, 3 wood, 85-95 hybrid.
