It is getting out of control with fans yelling stuff after players hit! (merged)

It's gone way past annoying at this point...this weekend was the worst I've ever seen...it seemed like it was on EVERY SINGLE shot

If the tour and the tournaments aren't going to do anything about it then we as the golfing community (not just WRX...tell your friends too) need to start taking it upon ourselves...if a few hundred fellow spectators start telling these idiots to shut the f--- up they might start getting the hint

Then we should follow them to work on Monday and yell mashed potatoes every time they make a copy or take a burger order

I think we'd all better get used to it. Because this is not the kind of thing that can easily be policed. Plus I doubt the TOUR wants to be perceived in any way as uptight. The TOUR like any corporation is only concerned with seeing bigger audience numbers every year, and the way to do that is not to start policing the behavior of galleries. You can't be elitist, you have to pander to the lowest common denominator.

Bababooeying is symptomatic of a couple things. First its the American ideal of "free speech". Not the "free speech" conceptualized by the forefathers, which has been totally perverted--the modern-day perception of "free speech", which is more like "I can say whatever I want and you have no right to be offended by it."

The other reason for the yelling is narcissism--it's all about meeeeeee. It's a generational thing.

So I've seen many comments as I read through this thread saying this is a generational issue. As a 28-year-old, I can't help but to consider myself a member of the "generation" with which you have a problem. I think those who believe this is a generational issue should hop off their high horse... try not to hurt yourself too bad falling from that high. Don't forget that there are "generalizations" about previous generations which aren't exactly flattering. (Feudalism, Indentured Servitude, Slavery, and Jim Crow... just to name a few...) The next time you find yourself generalizing about this self-centered generation, think about the progression of this generation as well.

It's not well known, but back in the day, the most common compaint amongst gentlemen golfers were those 'fcukin serfs'.

Fcukin serfs need to clean up that goat sh1t...
Those fcukin serfs were yelling "you're no lord of the manor!" again...

Yeah, it really was _terrible this weekend. I watch just about every event and it's always there and bad, but it was definitely over the top bad the past 4 days.

Why? Is it the locals there in Akron are particularly idiotic? (No offense to anyone in Akron, I've been there a few times, nice place). :) Do different events have different levels of tolerance or information about it? I've never spectated but I'd like to imagine that they have signs or education leaflets to hand out "no phones, no cameras, and no yelling stupid ****". If they don't they should..

Most of these posts are more psychotic than the yellers. A lot of internet bravery. BUT I PROPOSE...

A RADICAL YET PRODUCTIVE SOLUTION
The PGA sets up vendors on each tee, selling various items.
A $50 cup of Mashed Potatoes. A $100 bag of Donut Holes.
On the back of the ticket, print a disclaimer established that the yelling of these items represents a good faith Oral Agreement to Purchase.
Then everyone who yells "Mashed Potatoes" is forced to pony up Fifty bucks for the item of their fixation. "Get in the Hole" is a $100 snack.
The proceeds are donated to Charity. Anybody who is committed to mouthing off would do so for a $900 or $1800 donation. If they don't pay for the items they are escorted out for failure to adhere to the terms of the ticket purchase.

I don't recall anyone saying it was a certain generation. Not saying it wasn't posted, but I'm not looking for the post.

I suspect these imbeciles could be from any generation and are passing this behavior on to future generations.

I'm not sure why you assume at 28 you must be of the generation someone blamed.

Just tell your friends to stop it! (only joking)

maybe we need more people yelling........... yesterday near the end, so many people were yelling that it became "white noise", which was nice. silence would be better but not sure that's going to happen

i like the idea of fighting fire with fire. after some used tampon string yells out 'bababooey!' or some similar idiocy, a wrxer should yell out, 'shut the F up!'

do it enough and three things will happen:
1. the broadcast will be FORCED to cut the sound immediately following the shot due to FCC regulations and to avoid fines.
2. with the lack of airtime and attention, the vocal spasms of the mentally challenged will cease.
3. you will become a folk hero.

like others have said, times have changed. more people in general lack respect and values. younger generations are becoming 'me' generations. people are going to continue with the nonsense of yelling crap out until actual enforcement takes place. last thing i want is a golf tournament where crowds are all yelling at their top of their lungs on everyones tee shots. cool moment in ryder cup, but hopefully it doesn't catch on.

similar to the no phones rules. i've been to a tournament recently. there are no phones allowed signs everywhere. very few people paid attention. i can't count how many times a marshal would have to ask someone to put there phone away or stop taking pictures, only to have that person pull their phone right back out on the next hole. thousands of spectators, and everyone thinks i'll just take this one pic. leads to a handful of people taking pictures on every shot. its kinda sad that people can't actually follow rules, and this was ALL ages.

until the pga wants this to stop it won't stop. if they wanted this to stop it would be pretty easy to fix it. throw people out after first offense. same goes for cameras. people would get the hint pretty quickly. pga is too worried it might alienate the newcomers to the game and cost them money. meanwhile the core fans are getting really annoyed. tiger is pretty emotionless after a tee shot and someone yelling, so i can't even tell if it bothers him.

I was truly ready to do this at The Travelers. I was disappointed that nobody yelled anything when I was there. I was going to yell what you just wrote.

You were in the wrong spots then! My group hung out around the back nine on Sunday and there were screaming idiots everywhere. They were generally following the final two groups, were drunk, and fit the frat boy mentality. Only these morons didn't appear to have the wits to make it into college. Many were wearing tank tops too which fit the bill. I made a rather lengthy post on the matter earlier in this thread.

if i may generalize a bit:

we here on golfwrx often preach about personal responsibility. it's in our nature, as golfers. we call penalties on ourselves. we write down the correct scores. we fix our own ballmark, and a couple more. we play by the rules as best we can.

this THING that is so utterly obnoxious violates everything we believe about golf and about respect. it's not a rules violation: it's a life violation. we can stop this idiocy, if we each make it our personal responsibility to DO something about it. maybe it's not cursing at the mindless orcs who are yelling 'get in the hole!' on a par 5 tee shot (though that will be my preferred method of response). but do something. if you can't get to a rules official or person of authority, complain to the person standing next to you. and tell him to complain to the person next to him. write an email to the pga tour, the sponsors and the tournament organizers. take action.

i know i will at congressional next year.

we can make it STOP. now, WHO'S WITH ME?

FORTH EORLINGAS!

I personally find all of those comments like "Mashed Potatoes" funny as can be. They aren't bothering anyone but you. They aren't obnoxious while they are swinging, they wait until after the shot to yell just like everyone else. I would yell "get in the hole" off the tee on a par 5 if I ever went to a tournament. I have a very good sense of humor and I can understand the humor behind it and I do find it funny myself. Have a little fun and laugh a little, you'll find you will live happier and longer.

And here we are talking about it. They obviously had an impact on you or else we wouldn't be talking about it. I bet that mashed potatoes guy is reading this laughing his a** off, as would I!
