What are you listening to?

The Last Waltz. What a farewell concert by a great band. Forever captured for all to enjoy by Martin Scorsese. American music (as played by a significant number of Canadians). Thought about posting up Levon singing Ophelia.

But, your Avatar proved to be reminiscent Viva. Harkening back to a time when JJW and the Lost Gonzo Band had regular rotation on the turntable. So I had to que this one up for a listen, its been awhile. BITD, when "We were hangin' from the rafters, singing every song".........

What am I 'listening' to? Older music because I can't find much new music that moves my needle. On my drive to courses or with my now longer commute to work I will set the radio to scan and come up empty for something new and interesting. Recently I resorted to a local college radio station hoping for something, anything that would be worth listening to. While I am hearing a decent amount of music I have never heard before I am not sure I am better off for having listened to it. I am HUNGRY for some new good rock but there just isn't much out there.

I have searched every 'related' artist in spotify trying to find hidden gems. Have also tried their various 'stations' to try and find anything new. It all just leaves me wanting for anything new and interesting. Have tried Pandora and other sources of music with the same results.

About the most interesting song I heard recently was a song called "Bad Year For Rock and Roll". Not because it is a good song, it's not. The only thing I find interesting about it is the title of the song which I want to scream from the rooftops. The full song is more about those we have lost this year rather than bemoaning the state of rock.

Rock is just about dead at this point. At work I have music spanning the 50's to somewhat current but it is just background music at this point. I need a steady diet of new, good rock. So for now I am picking up the guitar more often and relearning some older songs. At least that is more interesting than just listening to them. If I had any songwriting talent I would be concentrating on that. There just isn't enough time for that these days.

I listen to a lot of stuff most golfers probably haven't heard of. While I grew up on the course, I also grew up in the skateboarding/underground local punk music scene. It's a very weird dichotomy, but I love it.

Anyway, just discovered this band. Sioux Falls, which are actually based out of Portland. Their debut album came out earlier this year, and it reminds me a lot of early Modest Mouse. Long, drawn out jams that blur the line of indie rock and emo.

Just saw this. I'm sure you are aware, but they also changed their name to Strange Ranger and put out a really good EP. Songs are a little more concise than Rot Forever, but same general idea.

Fit For an Autopsy and their new record, The Great Collapse. I know most Americans are self centered and could give two damns about the environment, but for the select few such as myself, this album (and a lot of Deathcore) really focuses on the problems of our society and people as a whole. Take a listen to Black Mammoth if you're interested.

New album is strong.

Really looking forward to Jason Isbell's new album, a little more of a rock vibe, more DBT than Southeastern but should be awesome. Also the title "The Nashville Sound" is such a great little dig

Brothers Osborne were solid as an opener other than their one song that is on the radio that I dont like.

Stapleton mixed it up pretty well. Opened with 20-30 seconds of Rusty Cage as a tribute to the passing of Cornell. The transition from Outlaw State of Mind into Death Row was insane good. Went high effects on the guitar with these crazy Hendrix-esque basslines. Also did a great cover of Tuesday's Gone. Off the top of my head only song he did not do that I wish he had was Was it 26. The blues guitar in Second One to Know was awesome.

I do HIIT every tuesday after work, on my stationary exercise bike. Doing that, I always have various parts of the Green Day Goat Island concert from Youtube running on my flatscreen, Perfect for that activity.

Otherwise, it's a lot of Britpop-ish indie now. Like The Strokes - In cover of darkness. That kind of things.

U2 Live from Boston 2001 is an instant classic, the stretch from New York to the end is some of the best live footage out there.

The youtube link doesn't do it justice, you need the DVD to get the most out of it.
