Most ridiculous thing heard on the range

Someone's name. While warming up on the range at Riviera Country Club, a member wearing bright yellow pants and a green shirt introduced himself. He wasn't joking. His name was Dr. Shanks.

Very unsettling to have that name in your head before a round

I seriously would have had to just walk off that instant if I encountered that.

Today I heard a guy telling his buddy that he's hitting his 4 iron 245 yards. I watched him hit some balls and the driver wasn't even going that far. Doesn't mean it hasn't happened but my guess is he caught it just right one time and has translated to he's consistently hitting it 245. I'm no teaching pro but I couldn't fathom any way he's hitting it like that.

On another note, a friend of mine and I got paired up with a father and son. The son must have been around 12-13 and new to the game. Dad was hitting these wicked slices off the course and he would hold the follow through for an extended time and say "too much power fade." And he did it on every drive.

I am sooooo going to use that :cheesy:

  • 1 month later...

I saw someone hit consistantly 3 inches behind the ball into the turf.. He called it his ricochet shot.. the club would ricochet off the ground into the ball and give him straight long distance.

Used to play with a guy who owned that shot. We called it the biff-whack as that is what it kind of sounds like.

He was a tall guy with a pretty good arc, and could consistently hit it super high 220-240 with little roll.

Thank sponsors for this. The big companies know they aren't going to sell blades to the average guy who likes to watch golf and follow a particular pro. So what do they do? they give the pro the equipment that is the latest and greatest, or what they are trying to sell to that average guy. Juice, tweak, and fit it perfectly to the pro, and watch him work wonders with it. Then the average guy says man I need those CBs because so and so Pro won said tournament with them.

That my friends is what product placement is all about, and how it works...

=======================

Fairly true. The corollary to this... is that it is almost uniformly a bad idea to shop for new equipment based on what your golf idol has in his bag this weekend. Golf equipment is as individual as a fingerprint, and his is pretty much a bag custom clubs (built by professionals) for that one individual.

Have a friend who caddied at a high end course and asked him what was the best day he remembered working there. He told me Arnold Palmer was in town to host a small tournament and after the tournament he saw Arnold at the back of the range hitting balls. He decided to go talk to him and ended up spending about an hour and half with him just shooting the bull. A few of his drives he did drop kick and told my friend that that would be some of the longer drives he would have when he would do that. Do not know if he would do it on purpose or miss hit but thought it was pretty funny.

Yeah, I've hit some great drives getting a bit of bounce off the ground first. It ensures an ascending blow, seems to take a bit of spin off, and if you don't hit the ground too hard, you don't seem to lose a lot of clubhead speed. I've also hit great drives quite a bit off the toe of the driver...it also seems to take some spin off and add roll. Managing your misses is so important!

I thought I've heard everything until tonight. A guy was hitting what I thought was a R1 with fubuki. He told his buddies it was a clone but it was so good the company had to get tmag's permission. Most clones according to him did not need permission because TMAG is not too worried they will out sale the real deal. Lots more comic gold followed.

Somebody once said to me "it looks like you know what you are doing". To be fair, he was only about ten years old

Most ridiculous I always hear are from young guys who bring some hot babe to the driving range to "teach her" to play golf and the guys suck terribly at golf. These guys will always say "just watch me to see the right way to do it" and they are just terrible. This also led to one of the funniest things I heard on the range when I was there hitting the ball very very well and the guy trying to impress the chick obviously sucked and she asked him, "why don't you hit the ball like that man?" which she followed by saying, "I should get him to help me". The look the guy had when she said that. Dejection to the nth degree.

You should have gave her some tips. :derisive: Unless your married.

Why just give her the tip? Give her the whole thing!

Wow. I doubt I would have shared that one had it ever crossed my mind. That is not a compliment.

Wow, this is the funniest thing ever. I usually wear my headphones while I'm at the range.

A few days ago I was at the range and a guy comes up next to me sets his bag down. The range is completely empty besides the two of us. He's a bit too close for my comfort, so I grab my clubs and move back a bit. No big deal. He comes back holding two large buckets and pours them onto the ground. He takes a look at me and sets his bag closer to me again. He leaves again and I move my clubs back again. This time I place my empty bucket between us, hoping he'd get the hint. No chance. He comes back with two MORE large buckets and pours them onto his pile. He looks back at me and tosses my empty bucket aside. Scoots closer lmao.

He machined gun these balls down the range hardly ever looking up. I've never seen anything like that before. Didn't pay attention to his shots, but he gave off such an odd vibe. Weirdest experience I've ever had golfing, period.

So this Sunday this guy and his wife pull up to the stall next to me and the husband proceeds to give non stop advice.

There were so many things said I can't begin to remember them all, but it was a constant stream of tips for 45 min.

Some that I can remember:

1. On the backswing, pull with the left and push with the right hand.

2. Just a 1/2 swing

3. Your moving your head

4. Let me show you how to grip it, (this after 1/2 and hour)

5. You stood up

6. Keep your head down

7. I intentionally gave you the SW to practice with as it will build your muscles

8. Let's move to a 9 iron, it will still build your muscles but it is a bit lighter, well maybe a lot lighter?

9. Blah Blah Blah Blah

Non stop

10. I would hit some shots too but...hang on take it straight back.

11. There you go hon....you got that in the air, way to stay down on it.

12. Like I told ya in church this morning, I am not wearing my golf shoes because I don't worry about slipping.

The dude never hit a shot, and I so wanted him to just to see what he had.

Keep in mind this kept going non stop my entire session 6 feet away from me.

Not the range but the practice green. I drop putter cover and start to practice and a woman walks over and picks it up and looks at it. I tell her it's mine, she puts it down. Putts for a bit and goes over and picks it up again. This time I am farther away on the other side of the green and a bit far to say a anything without yelling to be heard. She walks over to to the starter shack and turns it in???? I go to the shack and retrieve it in full view. The woman was Asian but did not know if she did not understand English or was as American as myself. (Please don't start the "your racist" again, I am married to an Asian woman.)

The only thing I could think of is that there must be a language barrier. At this point it is becoming funny to me. So I put it back down in the same spot and walk back on the green to put. Sure enough she goes and gets it again to turn it in to lost and found I guess. I meet her at the window and simply ask why she keeps taking my head cover. She says in no accent (so not language problem), that she thinks it belongs to her friend, I just laughed and told her it was not and that it was mine. "He lost the same one" with an accusing look and tone in her voice. "No it's mine", see my name? I put it back down and wait, she did go over near it to have a few more times and looks but did not pick it up again. It was really funny, and makes a good story, all be it a weird one. The guys in the starters boots still laugh about it and ask me if I'm sure I did not steal it.

Guy and his son in front of me hacking through a bucket, son was RH and dad was a fellow lefty. Dad was consistently hitting low hooks. Finally gets fed up, puts the driver back in the bag, and makes a comment about how being left handed was causing it. The son immediately looks up points at me and says, "He's left handed and he can hit it straight."

Was in the range pro shop about a week ago and was talking to the master club fitter about some drivers I am interested in. The kid at the register was selling a range coin to a guy when another guy comes storming in to the pro shop stands within an inch of the guy buying the coin. He proceeds to yell at an inappropriate level at this 16 year old kid "what kind of operation is this. I put my basket under the dispenser and picked it up when it was done and then a whole nother load of balls came out. You people need a sign and you should have advised me." The guy buying the coin says calm down buddy, it's just an accident, and hot head responds "I will not this is absurd I want to hit balls, not clean up their messes. You need to talk to your bosses and run this place correctly." Then he started with cursing at the kid, who to his credit said "sir, get out of the pro shop. If you talk like that to me again, I will talk to the pro about banning you from this range. I'm sorry for your trouble, but I'm not your punching bag."

People can be such Word not allowedh0!€$, lots of props the kid for how he handled an over 50 year old irate man.

Ps, who doesn't know that those range machines are multi cycle. And who would think after buying a large token that a half bucket of balls would be a large.

This happened to me last night, range tees are at the end of their cycle and are due to be moved any day now as most are all divots at this point. I'm standing in the left portion of my tee as there is actually grass there and hitting balls from the middle. Three empty tees behind me (to my left as you look down range), and two guys show up, one takes the far tee the other the one right behind me, they both put their bags in the tee between them. I think it's a little strange but keep hitting balls. All of a sudden I feel like someone is RIGHT behind me, turns out the guy next to me is standing in his tee area and hitting balls from mine, all of 10 inches from my heels! I almost jumped and said what the hell are you doing!?!?!? His response was "I got no grass over here so I'm using this spot". Keep in mind this is a very well kept up and organized range with a lot of space and clearly marked tees, I had maybe 20 balls left so I begrudgingly stood in the dirt and hit some chips lol
