I apologize for posting so much, but it has been helpful. She is gone, my heart is aching like never before. I will never get to kiss her, rub her, smell her, snuggle with her again. How do you get through this pain? I am sorry for the depressing posts, but it helps to get it out.

You keep thinking about the good times you had, all the cute things she did, re-tell all the funny stories. Smile when those memories surface, be happy that you got to spend the time with her, because you were blessed.

Thank you for all your thoughts and comments. It still is gut wrenching, I see her all over the house, where she used to lie down, I find her hair. I still cannot stand to take her dog bowls away. I guess time will heal, she was suffering, so we knew it was time, but this sucks.

Know in your heart that you did the right thing, but I know that doesn't ease the awful pain right now. I think I cried myself to sleep for at least a month or so before I joined the living after we lost our 16 yr old Cocker. When we left the vets office that Sunday morning my heart actually physically "hurt"....all I wanted to do was be with him. And yes, you will love another dog again....don't wait too long to bring one into your, what is now, very empty home.

Yes, my wife and I just break down, I see the dog everywhere in the house, where she loved to lay, I found a chewed on bone and that made me curl up in a ball and weep.

Thanks, yes, need to stay busy. We have great friends as well, so they have been supportive. Dragging us out to dinner last night and asking us to go out tonight with a bunch of our friends. My wife is collecting all her beds, toys bowls and talking it to the shelter. It hurts too much to see all of her stuff. Not trying to forget her, that will never happen but lessen the visuals as all that does is make us cry. Thank you so much for the support, it really has been helpful.

As have most in this thread, I have walked in your shoes. It's painful. I am sorry you had to go through this. You will be reunited when your time comes as well.

Thanks everyone, it's been two days and at least we are not crying all the time. Still miss seeing her cruising around the house and strange not asking her if she wants to go out. House is certainly empty feeling without her and it is hard to believe she is gone.

The only thing that fills the void left by a lost dog is rescuing another dog.People often think they're not ready or need more time, but you're ready long before you realize it.

Here's my chosen rescue group. There are plenty more ready to restore some happiness to your home.

We rescued our girl from the Animal Shelter, we will always get dogs (and cats) in need of a home and from a shelter. Funny you said that, it has only been 3 days but kind of feel we could love again. Not sure my wife is ready though, she spent a lot of time taking care of the dog, I think she might need a break and do some traveling. Not sure I could go through this heartbreak again though. Thanks for all the notes and support, it has greatly helped me when I needed it.

I can understand if you or your wife want some time to do some traveling but IMO the best thing for you guys to do is to take a visit over to the animal shelter. Dogs have a way of finding you. We still have our Leah's bed right where she slept in it. I look over at it and the pain isn't as bad now and I actually vision her there and I a get a good feeling now because I can think of a good time with her in her bed. I won't allow her bed to be removed because it is there for another dog . Leah would have wanted it that way. She always shared her things with our other dogs. When that new dog finds us it will be theirs.

I am sleeping better now. No more getting up several times a night to let Leah out but I would gladly trade the full nights sleep I am getting now to let her out in the middle of the night once again. We still have two dogs and like all pets they have been a big help to get us through these tough times. Yes we have an empty feeling in our hearts but our other dogs help us move on. I can't imagine going it with out a pet. Ride on over to the shelter. Just walk around. See if there is one there that is going to get you through these sad times.

Thanks Greenie, it helps to know others have gone through this (our first time) and your feelings and thoughts. We just got done with a good cry talking about her. I may drag my wife over to the shelter Sunday and then go for lunch and a drink and talk about it. It is so empty in the house without her. I agree, they find you, we don't find them. Again, thanks so much.

If you want a specific breed dog, there are breed rescues just about everywhere. These organizations usually foster the dogs they rescue to get to know them & find out what their temperaments are like & if they have any health issues. You can choose just about anything, from a puppy to a senior dog. Don't underestimate the joy of give a home to a senior dog. Most are there because their owners either died or simply cannot take care of them any longer. With an adult dog, you don't have to go through the time-consuming puppy stage. An adult is usually house-broken, you'll already know what they'll look like, and what their personality is like, and they are sooooo grateful! Our last two dogs have been adult rescue Cockers and I'd never go back to getting a puppy....they are way too much work. Both came into our life & our home like they'd been there forever....no problems whatsoever. They had us trained in no time at all & we are very well-behaved & do exactly what they want us to. :taunt:

She looks a lot like our lab. There's something about labs, just seeing one puts a big smile on my face.

GolfNuts, it's good to hear that you're healing. You never fully heal of course, but at least the pain is not as intense, and hopefully you will be able to recall memories of her some amount of joy.

Anybody know of a good beagle breeder in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa or the Dakotas? I'm looking to get one and willing to travel a little bit to find one from a really good breeder. Thanks!

I would start with the National Beagle Club of America. They list contacts in Minnesota & Wisconsin. They also have links to Beagle Rescue sights. Please consider a rescue...most are there due to no fault of their own, & are soooo grateful for another chance at a forever home. Good luck!

I haven't been to the 19th hole in a while but now I have tears in my eyes (I don't cry much unless it's about animals). I hope you GolfNuts4 and your wife are feeling better now! Maybe this is a good chance to travel etc. as I'm sure you'll want and need another dog or two sooner rather than later.

So I've posted much earlier in the thread my moms last two dogs. My gf and I are in our own place now and she's never had her own dog (had one as a kid for about 2 years. I've always had a dog). Unfortunately our apartment doesn't allow pets. So we're considering moving so we can get a dog. It just seems so lonely at home right now. It's killing me not having one.

I'm the same way. I don't cry about much, but sometimes something will bring up memories of one of my dogs, especially my golden retriever Marlee, she passed 6 yrs ago, and the waterworks just come out. There is something about how dogs live entirely for you. You are their world. They want nothing more than to please you and receive your love and praise. Unparalleled in the animal kingdom.

I hear that.

Watson passed away on the morning of Palm Sunday, like I posted earlier, just a couple months short of his 16th birthday. I got Watson when he was nine weeks old, and he'd been with me through numerous moves, a few girlfriends, finding the right girl, getting married, and expanding the family with our two sons. No matter what, Watson was always there with his circling welcome dance at the end of the day.

Occasionally I forget. Yesterday I stopped to get wine on the way home from the office, with bad weather coming in fast. I thought "shoot, I'd better get home quickly so I can take Watson for his walk." :(

Our boys are 8 and 5, and I am so thankful that Watson lived long enough where they will both have many memories of our household mascot. Plus, Watson got to do what many people want to do -- he lived out his days in sunny South Florida. :D

May get another dog at some point, but we have lots of family commitments and lifestyle changes coming, and I want to see if a dog fits.
