SC- Studio Stainless and Pro Platinum

First I just want to say that I don’t know very much about putters and what makes each style unique, or benefits of being made from different materials, weights, etc. However, I have been putting with a white hot insert in my mallet for a few years and really like it, but a few months ago I putted a bit with my sons coach’s putter and just started dropping puts. The head felt effortlessly balanced for me when taking a stroke, I could feel the impact and get a quicker sense of pace and just could overall get my lines really quick at setup. This was with a 12-14 year old Platinum Pro Laguna.

Then yesterday at a shop I spent an hour trying putters like I have numerous times in the past two months and still can’t find a putter that felt like the one. Of all the latest models, the Ping Milled Anser felt the best. But then I saw an old beat up preowned putter that caught my eye and it was a Studio Stainless Newport 34” 340g and it immediately felt great. First two 8’ putts dropped, couldn’t miss from 5’ and in and long pace putts were all within 2’.

Any reason why these would feel so much better than any insert and cast putter, and why they would take the edge over a milled Ping? Also, why would SC go away from these designs and start messing with adjustable weights, aluminum and inserts, etc.? Seems like there is a solid market for milled SS and carbon steel putters without weights and inserts. Is there a brand or putter on the market that is being produced now that mimics these two putters, or should I be shopping for used?

Go on back and grab that Studio Stainless! Those specs are rarer - the stock standard OTR's weigh in at only 330g.

NO ONE here or anywhere else can tell you why you sink putts with one stick and not another. Putting is very personal but that Studio Stainless at 340g is a famously good putter - go and get it. :-)

Many of the earlier Scotty's had a lighter 330g to 340g headweight, and you may presumably putt better with that setup.

If it has 340g stamped on the sole, it is a bargain - even with the dings. Also - if you sank everything with it, why are you even asking man?! :-)

I thought the same thing right after I posted that. And yes, it has 340G stamped on the bottom. I've noticed online a few variations that don't have the stamp. What's the history with that? Will head in and grab it this am.

OP, I’ve always been a Ping guy but recent acquired an older SC Mil Spec, which is carbon plated with the Pro Platinum finish. If you do a search, there are some older threads comparing the Pro Platinum and Studio Stainless lines. I found them very informative, especially since the older models aren’t readily available to demo.

The 34"/340 gram Newport was very limited and intended for overseas. Some of them were used as program putters for a very brief time. If you purchased 25 pieces from Titleist, you got to design your own cover, to some extent. I was very fortunate in having a friend who did just that. He took the covers and sent most of them to close friends, then auctioned off the remaining covers and donated the proceeds to the ALS Research Foundation. This program took place very close to the time that Tom Watson's long time caddy was lost to this disease.

That 34"/340 gram putter is one of Scotty's best retail releases ever, IMHO. Great feel and a good looking design on that head. Any chance it was a Newport Beach with the slot?

Good Luck,

LaMont in AZ

Why not purchase it and then get it refinished? Seems like a no brainer if you like the feel and are draining putts!

I had a 33/350 Studio Stainless NP2 that I got a great deal on, they are amazing putters. An offer came in for double what I paid (because it was a 350g head) and I just couldn't resist so I sold it. Afterwards I realized I may never see one again and definitely not for the price I paid! Looks like a good pickup to me. If you decide it's not the best fit, you should easily make your money back and then some...but hopefully it makes lots of putts instead!

The Studio Stainless line is one of Scotty's best OTR's ever. They make great gamers.

I have both Asian Spec models and love them. They see a lot of bag time - especially the 340g (my preferred weight).

Yours looks to be in great gamer condition! Have fun with it.

LaMont is correct in that these were produced in limited numbers. Some were for programs, but the putters that are commonly known as 'Asian Spec' (the early Newports and AOP's) actually started out as made for the female market in the USA. They did not take off, but were immensely popular in Japan - so off they went.

That putter is a great pick-up - one of his best models.

Does anyone know what the stock lie angle for a Studio Stainless NP 2.5 is supposed to be? I believe mine may be quite upright but I can’t find the specs for them anywhere. Thanks :)
