I live about 20 mins from Neshanic Valley which has been voted as high as #3 best public course in NJ. I play there all the time and it's a very nice round. Has enough challenges but isn't so hard that it becomes less enjoyable.

I have yet to make a trip to Ballyowen but I plan to do so next season. Weekend rates are a wee bit high for me there....I'd probably "get sick" and go during a mid week afternoon.

Yes. A close friend and good golfer does a lot of business with the club so the GM invited him to play a round with 2 members and a guest, I was the guest.

I’ve never played Pine Valley but I have walked it during The Crump Cup, one of the top amateur events of the year. The club allows spectators on Sunday but it’s a limited amount. It’s a pretty cool event and if you’re a golf junkie it’s worth the trip. It was just last week.

Heron Glen is nice but the Par 5s are dumb. Most of them are unreachable in 2 because of the layout

I’d say you def have a better chance of playing PV before Augusta... but yes both are tough invites to get.

As for Baltusrol.... find a member. Or find a friend of a member. I do know they are tough sometimes on the number of guests someone can bring a year.

My rule when you are invited to a special place like that... go in the pro shop and do some serious shopping. The clubs like that. Your host will like that too.

Luckily when I was an Assistant Pro I got to play Baltusrol and others with a simple professional courtesy call. Otherwise, yes knowing a member is the only way. Not many, if any, tournaments happening at Baltusrol that you can sign up for or even member golf days for that matter.

So I don’t live there only, visit family and last time I was there we played skyview, not sure how that stacks up to some of the other mentioned courses but it wasn’t too bad imo.

I'm going to be in the northwest jersey area in a couple weeks and was planning on playing either Architects or Neshanic. I'm leaning toward Architects given its unique concept but what do you guys think? I've heard great things about both.

played tects for 36 on friday afternoon. greens need some life in them -- roll true but not really quick right now (to be expected). check and see when neshanic is punching -- i think they might be doing it soon since they have their course as a tournament site this season.

if you give some warning - let me know, be happy to join you.

    Neshanic punching schedule:

    Lake Nine:

    Monday, April 1st (Greens Only)

    Tuesday, August 13th (Greens Only)

    Ridge Nine:

    Wednesday, April 3rd (Greens Only)

    Thursday, August 15th (Greens Only)

    Meadow Nine:

    Tuesday, April 2nd (Greens Only)

    Wednesday, August 14th (Greens Only)

    Academy Nine:

Thursday, April 4th (Academy Greens Only)

Tuesday, September 10th (Academy Greens Only)

I just played there this weekend and the greens were in pretty good shape. Rolled faster than they looked, especially once the wind picked up.

Heron Glen is a great course (about 20 minutes past Neshanic on 202?) Usually in as good, if not better shape, than Neshanic. They're aerating greens this week though. Berkshire Valley, up by Sparta, is another great links-style track. First few holes are up a mountain, then you work your way down.

Can anyone give me reasons Tavistock never comes near to the list of top courses in NJ? Its heralded by many in south jersey, is a classic club with classic architect. I personally find it a little flat and quircky in places, and has maybe the worst 18th hole in the state, but other than that has perfect conditions, and is a pretty cool place. Any one have experiences to share from there?

They did host the state am a couple years back... but never garner any attention for top 20 in state with Digest etc.

Because there are better places. NJ loaded with superior golf courses. Tavistock is very nice - though not in Top 20.

It's a "Best of the Rest".
