BUILD: top-3 underrated blade head designs (circa 2005)

I'll keep it short and sweet: I want to build a set that starts with a "retro" blade head, that incorporates a modern shaft (Nippon Modus Pro 130 for this guy).

Though I like what everyone else does in a blade design: minimal offset, thin top line, narrow sole, crisp scoring lines, traditional lofts, and the feel, I LOVE finding all of these qualities in an lesser-known/underrated manufacturer (i.e. MacGregor 1025M, KZG ZO).

Anyone else in this same boat? Any reccos?

Maybe you want to look for Japan brands too like Yonex, TourStage, etc.

I've been keeping my eye out for two head sets, these are one of them. Problem is finding a set that has moderate wear. Haven't considered a refinishing service... yet.

A lot to like about these heads; however, the shafts I have are not the correct tip diameter for the OGs.

Questioning if I could use them in amateur tournaments. Guess they were made when the groove rules changed?

I think they're good until 2024 for amateur play.

Hate to be a contrarian, but most of the ballyhooed blade designs of circa 2005 were overrated!

Perimeter weighting and cavity backs in the GI line gave better performance overall than most blades.

Not sure it fits in the date range but I would have to vote for the Adams Pro Black MB and the MB2. Awesome clubs that I have always loved in the blade design. Still have a set of the MB3 in black with 7 Tungsten weights in sole sitting in my study

As counter-contrarian (if that's logically possible)...

One thing I miss about the blades is you could hit a shot low if you needed to. If I was in first cut of rough and branch hung down to about 3 feet, I could half-top a draw or a slap slice and get it where I needed. From 180 out, could hit a 3 iron that never got 5 feet off the ground, landed 40 yards short and rolled up to the fringe.

Hard to keep shots low with helpful iron heads.

Great suggestion - right on theme. I'm not a big fan of the black finish, but maybe I'll open up to it one day.

I've got a set of mp-37 irons that I am putting TT DG AMT white S300 shafts in right now. Curious to see if I can keep the short irons lower than my current set of irons.

If you decide you want the Macgregor 1025M, I have a set of heads (5-W) that are just sitting in a basket. I am not eager to sell them (and they are pretty inexpensive now, low demand), but I hate just seeing them lying around.

This interests me as I played Mizuno SPL blades for a decade and still have the heads in very good condition, thinking about a reshaft for them to have some fun.

I could not agree more. Because I was a Justin Leonard fan back in the day, I tried (and fell in love with) these irons. Had timing been a little different, these probably would've been my first REAL set of irons.

I have to say that I'm not familiar with these. I had thought that Cleveland only had the TA1s. I'm looking them up now.
