Who plays with a PW and just a 56* Sand wedge?

When I last carried 2 wedges I only carried a single fwy wood ... a 3w

I also carried no hybrids.

And I did carry a 1, 2 and 3 iron.

45-50-56 are my three and have been for 3-4 seasons. I did try playing with the 45-56 and I missed the 110yard-115yard one hop and stop of my 50gap wedge. It’s back and better than ever.

I've been wondering this myself. Over the last 2 months, I haven't touched a 60* or a 3 wood and I have seen no drop in scoring. They are in the bag, just haven't needed to use them. I've found a versatile 56 that I can manipulate to hit the shot I want to hit. However, I do have a 52 degree that I use to fill the full swing gap from PW (47*)-56. And to be completely honest, I would probably be better off hitting a knock down PW. But i really like using it for bump and run shots around the green.

For me, having too many options is a bad thing. Typically, the more I think about a shot, the worse the result.

Tigers lofts are a bit weaker if I am not mistaken. But yeah, he does skip that club.

I have played a few rounds lately and have noticed my sand wedge just sits. I use the 60* Hi-Toe far far more.

Yeah, that can be the blessing and problem with the uber useful high toe (PM grind) wedges. They're pretty good at everything, kinda makes other wedges obsolete if they aren't for a specific type of situation.

I used to play PW then skip straight to 56 followed by 60. That was back when the PW was 48/49 degrees and I could actually get some spin off it. Since I changed to the G25 irons 5 years ago and my PW went to 45, I had to add the UW as A) the gap was too big to my SW and B) I can't get the PW to check at all on chip and runs as it's like chipping with my old 9 irons.

This has made me wonder whether I should go looking for some of the more traditionally lofted clubs I had at uni for a fun experiment.....damn you OP.

If they'd allow 15 clubs I'd play 47, 50, 54, 58 plus a 3 wood, 2 hybrids and 4-PW.

Instead I either drop a hybrid, 4 iron or play 47, 52, 58 or 47, 52, 56.

Any combination of the above works fine and has zero effect on my score but it'd be nice to play the combo you like/prefer. ;)

If playing vintage it is only 2 wedges PW at 48* to 50* and SW at 55* or 56*----- Now with the modern stuff it is 3 sometimes 4--- Depends on how you put it. PW at 45* which is stock Gap at 48* SW @ 56* LW @ 60*.

Am I the only guy carrying 5 wedges (including the PW)?

PW 45*

GW 49.5*

SW 53*

LW 58*

XW 63*

I use these asstd. wedges WAY more than I would additional clubs at the top of my bag. I pull out the 4h or 6i for tournaments FWIW

I like carrying a 3w I can tune from 14* to 17* and the 20* 7w is a laser. If I had to hit a 225 shot from the tee dead straight it'd be 7w.

Look at it like playing a 10 iron, 11 iron and 3 wedges I suppose. If it helps you score, that's all that matters.

OP...I still play that same setup, 588 BeCu 56* and a pitching wedge but I'm also still playing my 10yo Maxfli Revolutions with "normal" lofts. I guess ignorance is bliss because I have never really felt the need for another wedge.
I use the 588 BeCu 56* also, but since my PW is 43*, I also have 588 47* and 51*

Back in the day I used to only carry a PW (48 deg) and a 56 SW. It was too large of a gap honestly and I struggled at yardages around 115-110 yards... yardages I should have been excited about, only ticked me off. I later wised up and re-did my wedge set and added a gap wedge.

I only recently added a 60 LW (Hi Toe is the first lob wedge I've ever loved) and it's been very helpful.

I used to struggle hitting a SW and LW from the fairway, as I didn't know how to flight them, and it was a weakness honestly. These days, I'm a really good wedge player and I learned that flighting down a LW was a MONEY shot.

I played a set of Hogans in high school that was 47* 9 iron, 51* 'E'. Then I went 56 and 60. it worked great for me at the time. I hit the 56 about 100 yards and the 60 about 85. (tour balata days)

now I have (PW) 49, 54, 60 and I hit the 54 120 and the 60 105

the ball is the biggest difference.

I play single 56* sand wedge but is simply because i want a lighter bag.

I do miss the 50* & 58* set up specially from 100 yards out but i rather carry freely.

4 and 5 iron may get consolidated as well soon just got to find the right replacement and will prob rotate the wedges back in.

To answer the OP's question I will only be playing one. I am playing strictly vintage with my 1954 Hogan blades and persimmon woods the next 2 days. I will be carrying a Macgregor Dual Duty 11 iron at 52*. With it I can do most of the shots I need besides the Hogan Precision 9 iron is only 48*.

I carry PW (at 46), 52 and 56. These do 90% of the work from around 110 and in, and I could happily play any round with them.

But I also carry a HiToe 60 for bunkers, awkward shots and really fluffy lies around the green. Not always as I can get the 56 to get me out of bunkers but my 60 is more of a specialist club for very specific purposes.

The PW in my set is 46* and I carry Vokey 52* and 58* gap and sand wedges. I learned chipping with most of my short irons, almost never with a sand wedge so today I really use the 58 from bunkers and when I am short sided.

Hey what ever works> BTW you have a new nickname "Mr Wedge" or we could call you "Cardy 5 wedges"---- You know damn well I am going to give you some grief over that if and when we get together down here----- But you know I am only kidding ya! Play what works for you has always been my motto. BTW again I get 3 a side from you when you show up :taunt: :swoon:
