How are the putter trials going?

 

I finally had enough of my most recent failed mallet experiment, and headed to Golf Galaxy to find a new contender. I ended up walking out with an O-Works 1W. Interested to get some reps in with it on an actual putting green.

The O-Works 1W is really nice. Loved the way it rolled and lined up when putting. It was really good, but I struggled with distance control on long putts. But, that wasn't that particular putter's fault, as I've always seemed to struggle with distance control with heavier putters.

Agree. The 1W in general is a great stick but i'd love to try the tour only version with the slant neck. I'm really over the double bend shafts and face balanced stuff. It just doesn't work as well for me and makes my miss right worse.

 

So i tried the Spider Tour Red and that was a no go, tried the Oworks tank 7 and that was also a no go. Back to using my Protype 2 but have a Odyssey Toe up putter coming to try out. Rolled one in the shop and loved the feel and stability. Now it's not the prettiest putter but honestly i don't care at this point. If it rolls in more putts i'm all about it. Every year I set a realistic improvement goal for my game and this year it's putting so i'm hell bent on finding the unicorn :aikido: :aikido:

There's a slant neck version? That would be pretty cool as I've always liked the slant necks more than the one's with the hinge. Happen to have a pic or link?(sorry, tried google, but couldn't find one)

I can't keep track of which 1W models they've release are face balanced, and which have some toe hang. The O-Works 1W definitely has a little bit of toe hang. I can't do anything totally face balanced, either.

The O works feel sweet, couldn't believe how bad QC is on the ones I've seen. 4 of the 12 putters in my local shop had multiple of the little metal nubs that weren't even close to flush with the rest of the face.

Played a sloppy 18 holes today but I ended up shooting an even par 72. It was a grind and I definitely shot a better score then I deserved. Toe Up putter was ok and don't think it's what I'm looking for. Just so hard to look down at I don't think I can overcome it. Speed was TERRIBLE all day as the face is much hotter then what I'm used to. Anyway the search continues :(

No not yet. Selling some of my XV's in the BST now and keeping 2 dozen to play until i make the switch. My club championship is a month away and I'm defending so not sure I want to make that switch just yet.

I know you are a Callaway/Odyssey guy , but have you ever tried a SeeMore putter? You should browse their website, it is impressive. I always played some form of a heel shafted mallet until trying a center shafted SeeMore. The alignment aid and all the right angles associated with a center shafted putter with no offset have helped me get square to the target much better. Just a thought.

J13 is on staff with Callaway...I actually have the SeeMore mallet center-shaft and really putt well. It suffered a bag fall off cart and hasn't lined up the same since. Need to buy another.

I've hit and putted with that thing. The first thing you want to do is say something sarcastic about it. Haha. But after you try it and use it to line up, it's pretty eye opening. At very least it's a fantastic training aide you can legally take to the course.

I have not tried that one. I'm geting a feel for what necks works best and a plumbers neck is one of them. I'll have to check it out next time I'm at the shop.

I'm more of a play whatever works guy so I have no preference for brand. I just got done trying the Taylormade Spider Tour Red and also had the black. As for Seemore, yes I've had some. Tried the mini giant and fgp with some success. I like Z3. Center Shaft putters work for my stroke but can't get used to looking down at one.

 

 

Also I'm not on staff with anyone but if someone wants to start cutting me checks to play their stuff I'll have my people call your people :D

So the putter search continues and i have 2 'new" putters on the way. As i said a few pages back i'm experimenting for the first time in a long time with different styles, grips, ect... I'm really trying everything and anything to see what works best for me and in the process hoping to find a unicorn.

 

So far putters i've tried in the search:

 

 

 

Bettinardi Kuchar arm lock - NO good, really really bad actually.

TM Tour Spider Black - Nope, hated the feel

TM Tour Spider Red - Nope, better feel but the balance is just wrong for me

Odyssey WHP #7 - Never get rid of this as it's dependable and won't let me down, problem is i don't go low with it. More like my putter with training wheels

Odyssey Protype 2 - This is the gamer and so far nothing has beaten it

Bobby Grace Face On - Actually tried it as a broom stick style and it was terrible for me, ah well at least i tried.

Odyssey toe up #1 - Interesting putter with great balance but ugly as sin. Going to give this one more round but change the grip as the stock SS is no good IMO.

I like the O-works insert a lot but not sure about any future releases. I hope they release a #1w with the slant neck :D
