What ever happened to square drivers?

People started realizing that they do not need a square driver to hit it straight. A 12 degree loft and a shorter shaft will do the job.

I had/used mine up until a few weeks ago. Nike Sumo, sounded horrible. It's in the garage now. I never really noticed a distance loss though. Some of the biggest drives I've ever hit were with that driver.

I finally got with the times and bought an R7. #oldschool

I find it funny that there are so many comments about distance loss. The longest driver I've ever hit was a square driver, the Wilson Staff Spine. I'm not sure which model your dad plays, but mine sounds like a car crash when it hits a ball. My accuracy wasn't very good with it, but the thing went a mile on the rare occasions that I hit it straight.

I take it out a couple of times per year when I play scrambles. I drop a long iron and add it as a 2nd driver. If one of my group has a ball safe off the tee, I grab that Wilson knowing that if it goes straight it'll be a solid 30-40 yards longer than the safe ball. It has won a couple of longest drive prizes for me also.

I had a Nike Dymo 3w. That thing was an absolute beast. It was automatic. I only switched to the round SQ II models because I wanted to learn to work the ball. I regret selling the Dymo squared 3w though, that thing was so reliable it wasn't even funny. Solid as a tank.

To be honest though...I found that the TaylorMade RBZ Tour driver I bought last year was just as obnoxiously loud and just as high-launching and arrow-straight as the square stuff was back in the day...and yeah, if you didn't hit it flush you'd find your ball way short of where you thought it would be.

Always straight though.

very interesting thread to read through here. i played the best golf of my life back in the day with the Sumo2 and just picked one up on Ebay this winter with the intention of putting it in play this year. i never thought the sumo2 was shorter than any other driver i had around that time but then again, i was a much better player then than i am now. I'm looking forward to it regardless.

Anyone remember the Nike sumo2 tour? The one Lucas glover won the US open with. I still have that head. And it wasn't a bad head at all. I remember when it came out it retailed for 600$!! And came with a real not made for blueboard. I could pound that thing. Im going outside to throw a shaft in it!! Anyone still own one?!

Had 1 and I agree! Had the Machspeed also and it was a fine driver. Sold 3 here local to some friends who still play them to this day. I'll also say that the 2 I didn't care for the most were the Cally FT-IQ and The FTi-LCG Tour.

All of these comments about it being too straight or not workable enough are odd. I'm curious what planet some of you are on that "too straight" is a BAD thing. I've certainly never played with anyone where that would be a problem.

I had a sweet Sumo 5900 square driver for a while. I mostly got rid of it because I'm a sucker for peer pressure and got sick of being made fun of when I pulled it out of the bag :).

The sumo... Aka a metal bat. Loudest driver ever

Yes it was. It was almost embarrassing.

I played baseball through college and softball into my 40's and I never heard ANY bat that sounded like they do. The only one that may have come remotely close was the "Steele XLT".

steeles%2520xlt%2520bat.jpg

Those were awesome...I was a huge Steele's fan, until Ray DeMarini changed the game forever. (As I recall Steele Sporting Gogds didn't last much longer after that.). Thanks for the memory!!!

I played a Cally FTiQ for a year and liked it well enough. I didn't find it any shorter, longer or straighter than any other 460cc driver I have had before or since. I didn't keep playing it because I was in that stage where I bought a different driver every year.

I'd be interested in the explanation of why a square shaped driver has a less efficient energy transfer into the ball.

I believe the Nike 5900 may have been the first driver I bought when I began golfing a few years ago, and let's just say that I was spraying that thing all. over. the. place, and its squareness did me no favors. Hated the look, horrible sound, though I suppose it may have worked for others back in the day. The newsflash was, I needed to learn how to play golf and properly hit a driver. And once I learned, there is simply no need for a square driver.

I was almost embarrassed to be playing with a friend that had one...but then I just kept laughing anytime he would hit it, my ear drums would pop, and I would see his ball skipping along until it reached its final destination 150 yds out.

It's like members saying they hit SGI irons too far and straight so they have to justify playing blades.

Had it and the a3OS. I liked the a3OS better. The Pro was a compact squaround footprint with a deeper face and a3OS larger more square footprint and longer from heel to toe.

And the Cally FT-iZ

Although the FT-iZ 3 wood suited me just fine. Hit it straight and long.

It is a Spine, good description on the sound. Interesting finding for you. I routinely hit that club side by side against my own, a then 5 year old driver at the time, and couldn't get the same distance but it was really straight.

They quickly figured out that a giant square club wasn't aerodynamic, slowed clubhead speed down, and wasn't worth the MOI advantage. Plus, they've figured out how to raise the MOI without a head shape like that. Further, the trend is to lower the MOI and move the weight forward to lower spin, so the whole approach has been thrown out the window. It's like anything... fads in the game.
