Ping i-e Irons?

Nessism

Recommended Posts

I have the i e's with the XP 95 Reg, and had problems from the start. After i received them last year I returned them to Ping because there was a bong noise coming from them, but not on every shot (every weird). After four weeks Ping had returned them back to Golfsmith, and said they couldn't find anything wrong. Well, this year I pick up a New set of G iron's and never had any problems. So, I threw in a few i e irons in the bag and the noised returned. Wondering if it's the light weight shafts or something else.

If the Ping I with CFS shafts come at D1, would ordering them with DG S300's make their SW come out at D2? I was assuming about 1 SW point for the extra ~10g shaft weight.....

Just specify the swing weight you want in your irons to Ping, and they should be able to accommodate via the weight port at the back of the head.

After experimenting with the ie1s for last while. I had enough confidence in them to have some recoil 125 F5 shafts installed. The fitter did a thorough job installing the shafts. Swing weight, etc.

Took these out for the first time on a golf get away and was quite exited to hit them with these shafts for the first time. They did not disappoint, smooth as glass, hi and straight shots as long as i kept my head down. lol

I have had quite a few sets these last few years and i always seem to find something wrong with what i have. Or i get a sweet deal on the Next Best Thing. I am still testing these between my CF-16s and M2 tours but as of right now the Ping ie1s are the best I've got. My driver let me down on a tree lined resort course and i found myself using the ie1 5 iron off the tee and fairway on every par 5 and par 4 and some long par 3s. I was able to keep the ball in play and even out drove some of my driver hitting partners. 200 plus yards off the fairway with the 5 iron made me very happy and i had my best rounds by leaving the woods in the car.

The install of the recoils means the Honeymoon is over, bring on the first year anniversary. lol

I notice that a lot of people send pings to the factory to have the lie adjusted.....any reason not to have them bent locally?

I think it has something to do with the warranty.

If you send back to Ping for bending, and the club breaks, Ping will replace free of charge, except for those clubs old enough such that they require a signed release to work on them.

If you go to a clubmaker and the club breaks, no such replacement. :)

Ping doesn't bend them with a typical lie adjustment machine that bends the hosel to a desired angle. They take a rubber mallet and hammer them to the angle they want. Also, pretty sure they cast all the irons to standard lie regardless (black dot, or is it blue dot now) and then they hammer them to whatever the custom order requests.

At least that's how I thought it used to work, back in the day.

They will also redo all the paint fill on each iron. So if you have the paint worn off the sole number and the white paint worn off the bottom groove, that will all come back good as new. (as well as the dot color update of course)

How do these compare to the i20's? About the same?

I played the i20's prior to the I-e (did not play i25).

To me, the I-e's have better feel, stronger trajectory and are as forgiving. Also think they look better at address.

Now, they do have a different shaft with the Modus 105 v CFS, which would make a difference.

To me, it was worth the upgrade.

I may be confused these are the PING I right? Or is there a difference between I and i-e1

No difference the new Ping I is the same as the ie 1. What I was told is the e1 just defines this as the first edition of the I iron. I could be wrong but that is what the fitter I went to told me. Either way if the description of e1 is correct or not the I or the ie 1 however you wish to call it are the same iron.

I'm about to start my trek between the Ping ie and the CF16. What specifically do you like better about the PING?

I'm playing i20s right now and still love them but always upward and onward. Seems like both are stronger lofted than the i20 but seems like most reviews say the callaway are longer. Length isn't what in necessarily looking for juts something that performs consistently. Length is a bonus but just means I have to relearn everything.

I apologize for the lengthy answer, but my equipment evolution has taken place over the past 18 mos. or so. I first decided to move off a Ping V2 Driver. I had such success with the change from the Ping V2 to the Ping G30 that it got me thinking that the technology improvements made in recent years make it worthwhile to consider a iron change. I went and hit a number of irons including the Callaway irons. The distance of the Callaway Apex was long, but I could not dial in the dispersion on them. They were easily a club to a club in a half longer than my Ping S58 irons that are set up a 1/4 strong, but my Pings were much more accurate for me. I chalked some of that up to familiarity. I also demoed the Ping ie 1 irons. These were on target from the get go. This gave me the confidence that if I was going to make a change it would be this iron. I scheduled a full fitting for that following weekend, I was able to hit the I irons along side my S58s and based on the numbers from the simulator I wasn't seeing much improvement in distance over the S58s with the ie 1s. As I went through the full fitting the fitter did a excellent job asking all the right questions and suggested a set up that I unfortunately initially questions and doubted enough not to make the purchase that day wanting to think things over, I did pay for the fitting though and received a discount certificate towards the purchase of irons from the shop Bottom line here was I let my ego get in the way of some solid advise. Well a few weeks went by I was browsing the BST forum and set nearly identical to what was suggested at my fitting popped up at a reasonable price. You could say I swallowed some pride and I pulled the trigger and have not looked back since. These irons have a soft feel especially considering its a cast head, I don't move the ball a lot but I do tend to flight the ball to battle the winds that can pop up in an instant along the front range of Colorado. The combination of the Rifle (5.5) shaft and the Ping ie 1 iron head accomplish this easily and provide all the workability needed to shape a shot when needed. The biggest surprise to me was the distances. I picked up easily a full club length with the Is over my previous set of S58s. During the fitting I was seeing a 3 to a five yard max increase in distance and on average only a couple yards. These irons shine on the course easy to hit from just about any lie and cut through the rough nicely. I have provided a couple reviews on these, but they offer excellent feel, maybe not as durable with the 431 steel as prior Ping models, they do show some more bag chatter, but I will take the trade off. Control and workability are clearly evident with the Ping I with plenty of forgiveness when needed, I could go on and on but I think you get the picture. Now if I could just find a 3 wood as good as the irons and driver in my bag.

Cushion inserts are $5 per club. In testing the iE1's against the Apex CF16, it Pings were far more accurate for me. I bought the iE1's.

Thanks looking forward to trying both out. Been using CFS R hard stepped twice and love them but part of me wants to step out on Ping, but only will if it's a no brainer.
