Great writeup, duf!

Really enjoyed the rounds this week!

thanks! How did the weather treat you guys Thurs/Fri?

Hopefully it wasn't too bad and you got to enjoy the quality of the greens on Bandon/Trails. They are certainly more 'presentable' than SR 😉

Thursday on Trails we got some weather.  Steady winds and the occasional shower.  We bailed on the Preserve as there was a major squall that we saw coming from the south (watched it from the rooms - it was heinous), but it cleared off about 5:30 and I went back out on BD back 9 for a blissful solo sundowner.

Friday morning on SR was blistering hail and ~25mph south wind.  The rain lightened up a bit around the time we finished up 7 but it was a tough go the whole round.  Afternoon on PD was hit & miss (both the rain showers and the golf shots), but the wind was up the whole time.

Saturday on BD was great.  Sunny and medium wind (~15mph, but after the previous day it felt like a calm breeze) and just a couple little sprinkly moments.  A nice bookend to another great trip, though the rain gear got a little more of a workout than I was hoping for.

We were all very impressed with the greens at all of the courses; notably Trails, which historically has the diciest greens this time of year.  Even looked good on 13, which is the bellweather green for me.  SR's greens, as you mentioned, remind me a lot of OM a few years back.  With as much play as that course has gotten, they really rolled quite well, even if they looked a little hardpan-ish.  BD's greens looked great, and rolled slow and true, as usual. PD greens were also good, but quicker than BD.  None of us putted them well.

Already got the countdown going for next March, with the added attraction of the Solstice event in June.  Preparations have already begun for that.

Great pics Duffer!  Old Mac is underrated, I like it more every time I play it.  Looks like you got it on a beautiful day.  Can't wait to get back out there.

Ya those of us on the West Coast are fortunate to be a some hours drive away and can get a fair few rounds in. I get the props for Pac, especially amongst occasional players, it's a quality course but getting more rounds in over the years you can really appreciate all the things that go into making a quality play-it-every-day course, as opposed to a 'destination course'.

OM is a great match play course, we've had some crazy halves and wins in our four ball matches over the years. Any par on 10 is an automatic win and we've halved 15 more than once with birdies, some of the up and downs on 12 and 13 we've seen have been downright silly, and the strong finishing 3 holes really top it off.

Edit: dumb double post, so will post pics 🙂

For my money, Trails is one of the best and best looking inland courses this side of the pond. Having the empty course replay was a treat.

Trails is great. With the counter wind I had the shortest club I've ever had into #7 - a 6I 😆 Normally it's a hybrid of some kind. Paired with #11 that's 2 top drawer long 4s, but the mid-length 4s at 4, 6, 13, 15 are some of the best design work at the resort IMHO and could be dropped on top pretty much any course anywhere and make it better.

Our trip was from Saturday to Tuesday.  (20th -23rd).  No need for a full trip report, just some bullet points:

1.  Best weather I have ever had in my 6 trips.  Took a rain out on Tuesday morning which nobody really cared after back to back 36 in near perfect conditions.

2.  Trails continues to be my favorite course I have ever played.  As somebody mentioned above, 3 to 13 has to be the most spiritual golf experience accessible to a public golfer.  And I love the fact that it is a gnarly little walk, particularly as the 2nd 18 of the day.

3.  Pacific Dunes has been middle of the road for me over the years, but for some reason this year it finally resonated with me.

4.  BD is just solid.  Not too easy, not too hard.  Something for everybody.  Just a brilliant example of simplicity in architecture. #5 just gets me going every visit.  A masterpiece.

5. OK, I will probably get some crap for this, but I found the Sheep Ranch to be disappointing.  I was so pumped for the experience and was ready to be wowed, but I found the course to be missing something.  This pains me because C & C are my fav architects.  Help me out here, what am I missing?  Anybody else feel this way?

6.  Pace of play was outstanding all 4 days.  We may have waited on 5 or 6 holes in 6 rounds and those waits were minimal.

7.  Relearning the "links short-game" is like being a beginner each trip. I chip and putt like a 20 hdcp at that place.

Probably my last trip as I want to check off Sand Valley, maybe Cabot Cliffs and some other non-Keiser courses.

Dude. Totally with you on Bandon Trails. Just love the place. It's easily in my top 5 of all time along with Riviera and LACC North and a couple others. Also completely agree on the OG, Bandon Dunes. Was expecting it to be a lesser of the five, but it is definitely in my top-10 all time.

Sheep Ranch, for me, was enjoyable, but the greens were just too slow for it to feel like a real test when we played -- probably 7.5 or 8. Was actually difficult to get a 50-foot, back-into-the-wind, even slightly uphill putt to the hole. Very true, but so, so slow.

Interesting regarding the short game there. I found it quite easy to navigate, as there generally is a nice cushion under the ball, such that you can nip LW or putt or anything in between. I found the process of choosing which shot I wanted to hit around the green a blast. Then, once I settled on a shot, it was all about commitment. 🙂

^Good stuff! Cool to be able to nip out for a bonus 9 🙂 Ya across the board the greens were as good as I've seen them, maybe the other big dif (besides daylight hours) compared to November? As it was as cold as Nov - except one day - as judged by my excessive toque wearing.

Going downwind into hail/rain on the front 9 on SR would be tough sledding, at least it wasn't for 18 holes. Anyone 'birdie' 18 😉

Couple more pics of OM this time...

It's just an absolutely, drop-dead ruggedly gorgeous place for golf. The golf spirituality is off the charts. Can't wait to go back.

Good stuff Pearl 🙂 Always a bonus to get good offseason/shoulder season weather.

#5. Main thing it's basically a Beta release golf course, it needs time. I think SR (as it currently is) is the otherside of the same coin with Pac. Pac is just gorgeous, with 4, 10, 11, 13 and having many approaches more like what folks typically play inland, it would likely poll out as a first-timers fave. SR looks frumpy and ill-defined in a lot of the inland bits, there are no showy blow out bunkers to help frame the holes, and as pointed out above the greens aren't as polished as the other courses, so folks who are influenced by aesthetics cannot help but think a bit less of it. There's been a ton of hype about it with all the videos and reviews*, which can only serve to get expectations high/too high. So it's natural for people to have a think and wonder.

With my massive 29 holes of experience, I think holes like 3, 10, 12, 13, and then calling 18 a 5 maybe give folks too many opportunities to pick holes or be meh about it, as I do think those holes either side of 11 are the weak link. And for me I also didn't think that much of 15 & 17. Basically as long as you don't massively drag a teeball on either of those holes left, it's no bother, while the excellent 2nd has all sorts of angles, approaches, and where you wanna be, about it.

As I said above, I left after 11 instead of completing the replay, because apart from 14, 16, and 18 (as a two-shotter), the other remaining holes weren't pulling me back down there.

We're going to double it up this coming winter in our usual 4 ball, as 3 of them will not have seen it, and then we'll be sure to get one morning round in per trip but maybe not worry much about multi-plays. Having 5 courses to choose from really is about the least problemy problem one could have.

*Speaking of reviews - Mr. Keiser himself said he's happy with 15 of the holes and reckon that's about right.

Good feedback.  As we all know, there is no "wrong" answer at Bandon.  SR could easily be somebody's favorite course and I am not going to argue one bit.  I realize that each trip is also "different" in terms of each course revealing itself.

#17 at Trails is my favorite golf hole ever.   The view walking off 16 and the short descent to the tee almost brings me to tears each time.  If it wasn't a pain in the rear, I would have my crew sprinkle my ashes on that tee box.  If I could have a heart attack and die somewhere, that would be it.

Yeah, the opinions on SR are going to be all over the place.  I liked it, but I'm a sucker for dramatic  holes along an ocean bluff, and SR has those in spades.  I also got to play it in its previous raw form, and that was just one of the coolest golf things I've ever done.

My first time around, it was a bluebird day and the course was essentially defenseless, which only meant to me that I caught the exceptional day.  Played in a harsh squall the next day, and again in a pretty heavy weather event last week, and the teeth of the course were fully bared.

+1 on the notion that the course needs time to grow in, mature and establish itself (greens especially) for any kind of final ranking.  But my response to the question of which one is my favorite still stands: whichever one I'm playing... and that now includes SR

"take that, you miserable little white swine!"

Oh for sure that's the thing with them all being top notch courses, unique to any other 'destination resort' in the US in regards to quality and consistency.

No one goes to Kohler and says oh ya it's tough but Meadow Valley is my fave - or - oh sure we go to Kiawah every winter and think Turtle Point is as good as it gets 😉

I have poor eyes in terms of depth perception.  The sensory/stimulus inputs of my usual rotation of courses are obviously no issues since I have played them 100s of times.  New courses are usually a bit of a disaster and really amped up at Bandon, mostly processing distances.  I would be a disaster if I played traveling money games and am tournaments like you do.

  • 8 months later...

Another trip in the books and even after all these years, there can still be firsts:

  • First 10 round trip and first 8 rounds in 5 days within our regular 4-ball trip
  • First trip where it hit 50F/10C or better each day, yet we still had one frost delay
  • First trip using an umbrella! It was so calm during the shower/mist/fog days could easily use it
  • First trip without wearing both rain gloves and without using the shoe dryers
  • First trip without a 3+ club wind.

Food - the turkey dinner at McKees was actually really good and one of the better ones we've had over the past few years. Otherwise, ya it's food and I'd rather eat in town.

Weather - 3/5s largely sunny and 2/5s largely foggy and damp, with only a couple showers. Never had this much fog before, for folks making their first trip it definitely would have been a bit of a bummer. Also made finishing replays in anything resembling dusk a non-starter, although we still finished all 3 of our replays. Only had a couple rounds with any wind of note and never anything more than 2 clubs.

PoP - think Bandon has gone soft on it? Some of their pace setter times are now over 4hrs - maybe they gave people a 10min fog break on it or too many cart golfers taking early times to argue with? We went off first 3 times and 3rd once and the gaps we saw by the time we were 1/2 way through the rounds struck me as something they'd have tried to cinch up in past years. IDK maybe 10min slots means they're still on their times and is fine. On SR we had Edaw68's group right behind us when we finished and then a gap, on Pac we were coming off 8 green, while the next group was coming off 7 tee. We later saw that group on 12 green while we were walking down 15.

Golf - Another trip means another slight rejig in the order. Bandon will always and forever be my fave, but Trails firmly moved above OM after this trip, with Pac moving above SR. We joke about how many sleeves to bring and this year I lost 5 balls over 10 rounds, so not down to 1 sleeve yet:

- gorse bush left of green on SR#18 | right on Bandon#18 | right on Trails#18 | bladed bunker shot on Pac#3 | approach shot right on Pac#4 |

Bandon - start to finish I like it all (almost). Take away 9 & 18 and there isn't a hole I don't think is class. For me there are just so many hugely enjoyable teeshots and approaches. The bunkers and dunes fit my eye off the tee and makes it easier to pick the line, regardless of wind.

Hi - not dunking teeballs on #6 for the first time in years and two pars on #5

Lo - bad teeballs on #3 both rounds

Trails - hole to hole, there isn't a throwaway shot out there. Even 2nd shots on par 5s need at least a wee bit of attention. The movement of the holes, the elevation changes, the framing of the playing corridors; there isn't anything Trails doesn't do well or better. How the wind is more difficult to judge and how it feels like it drops and picks up throughout the round, when it's you not it, is cool. While lacking the dunes of the others, the way they used the subtle contours of the ground to give you options for running approaches on and/or playing off shoulders, when maybe you might think this is the 'traditional' got at the pins course adds a lot.

Hi - best round of trip and not bailing on 11

Lo - going leeeeeeeeeft both rounds on 8 and two crap teeballs on 18. Going 21H next time.

OM - the only course we managed to get counter winds on, playing it Mon and Weds. Interestingly they had a few boxes closer than normal, made 12 'only' 175 and 14 almost driveable. Always enjoy the old school feel of it. Yes with modern tech it's more pumped up than what the holes and courses that inspired look like, but the long puts and bump and runs are the play here. Whereas the others it's more a when in Rome option, than really needing to do it.

Hi - back to back birdies on 11/12, that will never happen again, especially 12 where my mate birdied to 1/2 the hole

Lo - not covering the dogleg on 9, even knowing to go out left, one of those cannot get the line off the tee holes

Pac - maybe absence does make the heart grow fonder? With the washed out March round, I'd really not played it since Nov '19 and it was good to be back. With the greens transformation now complete you don't have to worry about the nasty replay round bobbles anymore. It is such a pretty golf course and with a solid 2 club wind it can be a lot of fun. The best holes there really are some of the best. Without a stronger wind though, it is too much of a 9I or less course and my usual whinge about aerial approaches is boringly always there.

Had my worst 9 and best 9 of the trip in the SAME round on Pac, such is golf 😄

Hi - 'perfect' 8I on 10 for an almost ace and stinger 3W to 10' on 5

Lo - 14. Stupid hole, postage stamp it is not

SR - the lack of definition away from the coastal holes sure doesn't help in the fog. We watched the group in front of us on our replay round wandering all over. The marshals had to help them on 4 and 8, so we spent a lot of time standing around the first 10 holes. Course still needs time, to gain that definition, and to get the greens running better. Still a fantastic course, but 4.5 rounds in less than a year is enough to play it less the next year or two.

Hi - having a chat with Edaw68 on the tee and finding my max carry on 5, playing my 2nd shot two steps from going over not for those with height issues

Lo - screwing up the 'easiest' hole at the resort

  • duffer987 changed the title to Bandon Winter/Spring Reviews - When did you stop raining so much Oregon?

Trails has the best "feeling" opener imo.  But the "off we go" feeling after everyone has tee'd off at every course is one of the best feelings in my golf world.  Well, maybe not at PD where I always happen to slap a weak slice down the right just short of that bunker.
