I like Jason's action plus the fact that he is a whisker husky (like some of us other golfers) .... no offense meant

Good luck this year Mr. Gore, this Canuck is pulling for you. Hope to see you up at the CDN Open this summer. If you want a showdown at my home club I'm in ..... PS I'm older and "huskier" than you

Can I ask what swing speed you have to produce those ball speed #'s?

Hello Everyone!

Hope everyone had a safe, healthy and happy Holiday season!

I always enjoy chatting with Greg. He's one of my most favorite people and a great sounding board. It was very a difficult decision for me to switch, but my game has always been based around par 5's. I just felt like my numbers weren't very good with the other driver. I want to be clear and say that the driver I was playing was not a bad driver. It just wasn't good or right for me. I hear rave reviews and see amazing results when other people hit it club. Just not in my hands.

To make a short story long... When I went down to he Ely Callaway Performance Center in Carlsbad, CA, I joked with Steve Mata and Nick Arthur (my fitters) that I was going to say something to them that they had never heard before... "I want to hit it farther!" So, Nick told me that I needed to launch it higher with (a lot) less spin. Steve Mata grabbed his phone, made a call and said "I've got something for you. It'll be here in 10 minutes." I hit a few other drivers, and they were all immediately better! But, he pulled the new XR 16 Sub Zero prototype out, and WOW! I hit it a few times with the wrong shaft and it went well, just a little squirrely. Put a demo shaft Rogue 125 MSI in and hit 4 BOMBS dead straight that got up in the air, flattened out and turned over about 2 yards. 168-170 ball speed, 13 Launch 1900-2100 RPM spin rate. At that point, I told Mata that I wanted THAT driver. He said they could build me another one. I said NO. I wanted that one. Now, I see where my 7 year old daughter gets it from (sorry, honey). He said that was their only Sub Zero head they had. But, since it was December 23rd and Callaway would pretty much be shut down for the next week or so, I took it home. I've got to tell you, its gotten BETTER. I had to learn where to aim my driver again. I'm not used to being able to turn my driver over. I can actually turn this over even though its a super low spinning head. Needless to say, I'm excited to be a Callaway Team Member! And, to clear up the point, I went after them. They didn't come after me. I want to raise trophies again. Thats why I love this game.

To top it all off, the irons are AMAZING! I started playing the new Apex Pro 16. I couldn't believe how well they went through the ground and how solid they were. I guess I really missed playing a forged blade. And, these are like no forged blades I've ever played.

Plus, when you have Roger Cleveland (the man!) custom grinding your wedges and sending there asking you what YOU want and asking you what you feel and what you are looking for... It does't get much better than that. As you can tell, I have a man-crush on Roger. I think he is the best. That's just my opinion...

One last thing, keep your eyes posted on my website in the coming weeks, jasongoregolf.com. There are going to be some huge, cool changes to it. Hopefully, I will give everyone a reason to give it a click!

Until our Q&A... Stay warm!!!

Best,

Jason

WOW, a touring pro who took the time to write a nice essay like he did! Jason Gore IS the man and my new favorite! I always did like him anyway. Straight from the times hearing he was sleeping in his car on tournament weeks, after he and his wife had a new baby or the time him and Goosen played a $5 Nassau in the final round at the US Open! How cool is this guy :-) Good luck to him I will watch and pull for JG!!!

PS. Another Rogue shaft in play! Curious though more Rogue Silvers than Blacks in drivers!?!?

For a top level player with access to the very best equipment (Contracts aside) : to pick-up 18 yards is outrageous. Especially when your clearly so comfortable with it too.

Now.......go do some damage with it this season "59" :)

My very first round as a college freshman was with Jason. He was 2 time Pac 10 champion at UofA and had transferred to Pepperdine.

I was nervous and clearly out of my league. I couldn't have asked for a better playing partner though, and I've been a fan ever since.

I'm not at all surprised he took the time out to do this here, nor with the class he did it with.

There is truly nobody easier to root for than Jason Gore.

Totally cool that Jason popped in here to add some insight.

One question- he's been a member here since 12/18/2011 and has 48 posts, but I can't find more than 4 in his content under his profile?

He's done two previous chats where he answered WRX member's questions. Not sure why those don't show up.

Great to here directly from Jason and Greg! Jason always comes off as someone you'd love to have in your foursome. It's cool for someone with access to just about any piece of equipment talk to us Golf Nerds.

It would be great to hear of the process from Jason, as I seem to recall him running into a few equipment issues in the past. Also, with many journeymen (a compliment as it takes a lot of skill and perseverance to maintain a PGA Tour card) many have had endorsement contracts with just about every OEM.

If I recall correctly Jason had a real struggle with the Nike ball, and a story/rumor of grabbing a set of Nikes from under the tour van and playing great despite them being 2˚ flatter than what he usually played. He also has one of the best collections of BBC Camerons and him then falling in love with the PING putters. It seems unfathomable that with today's equipment they couldn't get his driver optimized.

Jason seems to be an excellent candidate for an umbrella Corporate sponsorship, and being a free agent for equipment. He could play what works for him in every aspect, and who wouldn't pay to have him meet with their staff as a corporate ambassador, or put on some clinics for his Sponsors.

There is nothing wrong with an NKOTB concert!

I went to one when my sister had to drag me along when I was 12...still remember it! Ended up marrying an NKOTB fan and she still listens to them ocassionaly.

Awesome to hear your excited about your new gear and it's fantastic of you to join us on this thread. I'm excited to see your results with the new Sub-Zero driver and wish you the best of luck this year. I'm pulling for you Jason!

Kill it this year!

Very cool. What irons is he playing with Callaway?

From the above link:

'top it all off, the irons are AMAZING! I started playing the new Apex Pro 16. I couldn't believe how well they went through the ground and how solid they were. I guess I really missed playing a forged blade. And, these are like no forged blades I've ever played.'

That's quoting Gore himself

Pretty good stuff from JG. Ive been fortunate enough to know Jason for some time now and this is just the kind of guy he is. He is a SOLID, CLASSY guy. I hope this is another breakout year for him as he deserves it after working his a** off with Steckel and getting the desire back to win.

Two things about this thread:

  1. As a result of reading Jason's comment, I spent about 45 minutes tonight, looking over (with interest) all of the newest online info about the 2016 Callaway lineup, particularly the drivers. Of course Jason gets paid by Callaway and it's great when he is in contention on a weekend and all the tv viewers get to see him sporting Callaway logos. But that wouldn't get me to spend 45 minutes looking at products and info and USGA Conforming Head List photos. This post did. And it is stuff like this -- a bit more personal/direct interchange with players (and candor!) -- that gets me looking very seriously at products. I know that the marketing guys read this. And I am glad they do. I have no idea if Jason said anything that was 'out of school,' but I think this was great. Jason might deserve a raise. (Hopefully he'll win a major and get a nice raise that way.)
  2. I have met Jason, on the range at Warwick Hills when they played the Buick Open in Grand Blanc. This thread is the least surprising thing to me after that encounter. We talked about the production of Rifle shafts after Royal Precision was taken under the True Temper umbrella, and we talked about the equipment blogs. Just like two old friends on this blog talking to each other. After which, and we were ready to depart and I wished Jason good luck in the tournament, he asked, "Hey don't you want to take a picture of my bag?" (Laughs all around.) This is not just one of the nicest guys on tour, this is one of the best connections with the blogosphere in all of golf equipment.
