How to dress...

Recommended Posts

Shorts and a bowling shirt keep me safe from such accusations.

I was thinking on the same lines: jean cut offs and a sleeveless tee with a pair of Converse high tops….

Here's my stance on golf attire, if I saw someone who I wanted a job from on the course would I be comfortable approaching them in what I'm wearing. I think I dress a hair conservatively for my age, but try to utilize fit to modernize it.

And also to combat the who cares what people think crew like it or not we live in a society where it matters how you look and present yourself. Personally I chose to accept that and get out in front of it.

This is not a true statement. Certain segments of society, yes. Other segments of society, no.

I and people I work with make good money as a developers and QA folks. Every single one of us dress casually - to varying degrees. And I'm sure I have a lot of years on you.

My golf attire is "louder" than what I'd wear to the office but I feel non-neutral colors are not only allowed but encouraged on the golf course. I'll wear black pants/shorts with electric blue polo, or black on black, or whatever I feel like that combines some class with golf course suitability. That's if I'm getting dressed at home or planning to dress for golf. In the trunk of my car is my "emergency' golf attire should the opportunity arise to play, I don't want to get forced to decline to play because I'm wearing jeans and/or dress shirt at work.

When Calloway, Ping, Nike, or whomever start to pay for my clothes, I'll worry about brands. Two weeks at the airport in San Diego, the PGA store had a sale on Ping clothes and hats. So, I picked up a shirt, sweater, and hat for $65.

Discounting jeans on the golf course; let's keep that out of the discussion, how much difference is there between these casual folks and the well dressed folks on the golf course? Given the norms of the golf club, almost everyone is wearing the same clothes anyways. If you're looking for expensive labels, you won't them on me unless I got a great deal on them at Marshall's.

Why leave jeans on the course out of the discussion? I wear jeans at any course that allows it (which is the majority that I play) when the weather is cool.

Because I think if one was to adhere to the typical golf club dress code of no jeans, no cargo shorts, and no collarless shirts, I can't see the difference between best dressed and worst dressed being that big of a deal. Well, at least not to me. I read some threads on here about socks or shoes and am amazed people pay so much attention to seemingly trivial (to me) fashion details.

I like to dress extra sharp if I'm playing a tourney, but for the local Saturday comp I dress well but a touch more casually than for a big open am event. But having said that, unless you're tiger in a red shirt on Sunday, your clothes don't make a statement about how you will play. Nobody else owns any color or style of clothing besides Tiger and his red shirts.

Nothing wrong with branding yourself. I typically choose Adidas and Travis Mathews golf clothes and have no issue. If somebody likes playing Titleist golf clubs and prefers Footjoy golf shirts, totally understandable. Same can be said about having a devotion to playing Nike golf clubs and dressing Nike. I like looking good going to the golf course. I cant stand the players who show up in jeans and think its the neatest thing. Dress how you want to dress. You like attention then wear the bright colors that Fowler or Daly wears. I am more interested in the game somebody brings rather than what they are wearing.

How are shoes trivial? They are the most important part of the outfit. I look at a someones shoes before I look at anything else. I've never seen a well dressed guy with a bad pair of shoes on. I've also never seen an under dressed guy with a nice pair of shoes on.

The thing about jeans and golf is that they are usually worn by golfers who don't really take pride in their appearance generally. By that I mean you don't see tailored designer jeans on golf courses, they are usually cheap, ill fitting jeans that makes the wearer look more like a homeless bum than a golfer.

1. Buy the clothes you want to wear

2. Wear them on the course

3. Don't worry what anyone else says

There is a reason the OP was about not taking this approach.

OP doesn't know what to do in a social situation. Defaulting to what the highest status people (high paid golf pros) do signals high status. On the course and on this forum your skill as a golfer is a large part of your status. Signalling high status (I'm a better than you/ I offer more than you do in this context) when everyone else does not consider you high status always causes contempt and derision.

How do you feel this forum would react to someone equipped as a perfect Tiger clone shooting 120?

As you long as you have the game to back it up. An 18 handicap dressed like Rory or Ricky is not a good idea.

You could go the other way.... I saw a guy with a pink Ping driver just like Bubba. Watched him tee off, and I swear he didnt hit it past the ladies tees. That to me was great! He had fun with it and played it up. All in good fun.

I can't imagine anything better than winning my club championship in a red shirt and black pants.

I don't have a red shirt.

And I don't have the least little chance of winning my CC. But, it would be great. I'd be okay with losing it in that wardrobe on Sunday if I made it that far.

In all seriousness, I played my first tournament golf last year and it brought more focus on my outfit than I've spent since middle school.

You may find that when you are in your 20s, its all about brand. Not necessarily golf brands, but polo etc - recognizable stuff. Then when you hit your thirties and fourties, you dont want any branding on your clothes. I'm at that later stage. I prefer polos from companies that don't plaster logos everywhere.

I wore a red shirt playing golf, sometimes even on Sunday, before Tiger Woods came along . Still do and will continue to do so. It has nothing to do with channeling Tiger or being a poser, I like red shirts. I don't really care what anyone else wears or think that a certain look says anything else about them other than they like their clothes. Except white pants. I just don't get white pants.

Have to agree on the white pants. I think they look super cool and really make a statement that you have game, but they just show the dirt too much to be practical for golf. I've seen plenty of guys wearing white pants, and by about tue second hole there are green and dark stains around the bottoms. I don't like white shoes but at least you can scrub them clean after the game.

End of thread. Great answer.

As with all things fashion - the occasion should determine the formality. The above attitude is perfectly fine at most public/muni courses. No one cares you're right. Heck, i have golfed in shorts and a t shirt at my local muni during the summer.

But if you're at a place where they play PGA events....or a private CC. It's respectful to dress the part. No one is being judgmental of your cargo shorts....most of the members probably own some themselves. It's just respectful to look the part. To go in there with the "i don't care what you think " attitude is a little selfish

No one is saying "dress like a tour pro 24/7"....just when the setting is nicer

Knickers are always a classy look. :D

I have two outfits that I alternate between when I actually try to dress like a golfer...

I have a matching shirt and hat from Petit le Mans, green and black with matching patches. I pair that with my black and green contour casuals and a green bag, and I look like I might be sponsored by Patron.

Occasionally I'll dress like in my avatar, the full on Bobby Jones / Payne Stewart look.

I've only had positive comments about either style. I did, however, have somebody suggest that I was sandbagging when I was in my matching green and black missing easy shots and making long putts like I do.

It's supposed to be fun, dress comfortably and go for it. If you get into other people's heads it's their own fault.

I am the guy that has the Nike clubs, bag, polo, shorts, hat and spikes. But to me it's not about trying to look like a certain golfer. I've always been a Nike guy even off the course, it's typically Nike Dri Fits and shorts and running shoes. I wear what is comfortable to me and I play the clubs that are comfortable to me as well.

There has been some UA sneaking into the line up as well. I actually like the UA shorts better than Nike's shorts. The slim fit rage that Nike is going on is not for me, the Modern Fit is a no no for me. Have one pair and yeah, we stick to the UA and normal Nike pants!

The guys I used to play with would show up in jeans or camo cargo shorts and a mechanic jacket, and I would look the part of a golfer. Was always interesting to go into the cafe or where people were. The looks they would give us was hilarious. But I don't even speak to those guys anymore, not because of the attire but other aspects of their games and choices.

As a large dude i'm pretty limited to my choices. Cutter and Buck, Greg Norman and Adidas generally make a 3XL that fits. I like blues and blacks.

Shorts and Slacks though im limited to non athletic types. Hard to find a size over 40 (I'm a 48).

Shoes, i like them white but simple. Footjoys usually do the trick.

Hats are brand name. I rock some nice breathable Nike's at the moment.

I can never justify the price for golfing apparel, so generally try and pick from the sale rack.

I am a 7 handicapper that has the game that shows up of a 18. Have shot back to back rounds of 75/89.

The one thing that I never slack on is how I dress. I don't wear only one brand, but I will try to be consistent.

If you want to feel like you aren't underdressing for your new club, but a couple of their shirts at the pro shop and then shop for like items elsewhere. Our club has tons of ways that you can get pro shop credits, and I would recommend using them for a shirt here and there if yours does the same.

Budget golf and the golf warehouse have some great selections of items to stock your golf closet. If you aren't sure what is too much and you like really bright colors (like I do), then start with things that are accented in those colors. Like a grey shirt with volt accents. I have bright blue pants and a pair of Florida gator pants. I haven't worn them yet. I know that I will catch hell at my club (I like you am the new guy).

I have worn the shorts in these colors, but not pants.

You can never go wrong with shoes in black and white but a good grey pair is good too.

If you are a little self conscious about what to buy, take it one outfit at a time and the next purchase add one thing that could be worn instead of one of the other pieces from the first purchase. Then start over the next time but try to maintain some similar stylings. This will allow you to expand.

Clothes that look good and feel good will make you feel good and more confident. Go do it bud.
