Lexi Thompson...what's your take?

Recommended Posts

Does the "Bubba of the LPGA" vibe appeal to you or do you squirm watching someone gouge and hack a fairway like that? ;)

Hack away? I don't See that. She's powerful and long and if she makes a few Putts She's really difficult to beat. This course is Custom fit For her. And I really enjoy Watching her play.

I think it's an apt comparison. They both play distinctly bomb and gouge strategy golf. Bubba has said at certain tournaments he prioritizes position over fairway accuracy of the tee. And Lexi plays most tournaments like she doesn't really sweat the rough.

I am not a fan. I see her as one of the LPGA villains. Mind you this is all in good fun. I don't hate her or anything. But her golf game I find kind of nasty aesthetically speaking. Pro golfers at impact all look remarkably similar. Lexi is an anomaly. The amount of holding on of the face through impact is insane. I'm always surprised that the uniqueness of her swing goes hardly noticed by the golf world. It's really unique. The Lexi Lean is one of the distinctive moves in the game. You could ID her swing from a quarter mile away.

I don't get it. Does Lexi treat her caddie like garbage or something?

She's extremely long off the tee and has an unorthodox swing. She thrashes at the ball and comes off her feet at impact. All things relatable to Bubba.

And yes. I totally understand the original question posed. Personally I find it a little hard to watch her hack into the fairway like she's digging a trench on her short iron shots. It freaks me out a little. It's so violent. And that strange follow through gets into my brain a little as well.

That said....She's great for the game and amazingly accommodating with the fans. I'm happy she's out there.

My guess is that the violence and unorthodoxy of her swing is something the LPGA and TGC intentionally sweep under the rug. Probably it'd be hard to make commentary on it without coming off as disparaging, and since Lexi is considered super-good for the game there is simply no point in critiquing the way she swings. Lexi fans are probably way more interested in her humanitarians efforts and the work she does for her sponsors than mechanics discussions.

I do see similarities in their games. However, Lexi doesn't seem to have Aspergers Syndrome.

When I see either one of them hit wedge shots I watch to see how short the shot will be because it always appears they lay the sod over it.

Both have unique swings and both play a bomb and gouge game. Both can be hard to beat when the putter is on.

Your guess is just plain odd. Nobody is sweeping anything under the rug; it's a golf swing, not child abuse. You've made this sound way more dramatic than necessary, and also completely ignores the fact that they spent half of Saturday comparing her swing to other players.

As with your strange "love life" comments regarding Stacy Lewis, you've got a take on the women's game that seems like you've just dragged yourself out of the 1950's.

I'm a huge Lexi fan. Her swing may not be technically perfect, but her athleticism, fitness, and competitive spirit seem to be making up for it. I think it's cool that she's not a cookie cutter player. She's also gracious, humble, and genuinely a nice kid. What's not to like?

Not sure i understand what you are asking.......Golf is a game that is based on results. No pictures on the scorecard.......I really see no correlation between Lexi and Bubba, except they both get great results......I guess that is my take.

Golf is a game of result...from the player's perspective. From the fan's perspective, that can be somewhat simplistic. I would say I prefer to see more orthodox and technically sound swings. I'd rather watch that for 4 hours than something non-traditional.

There is an artistic, aesthetic element to the swing. It's much like music. Not appreciating that seems impossible.

I think it's an apt comparison. They both play distinctly bomb and gouge strategy golf. Bubba has said at certain tournaments he prioritizes position over fairway accuracy of the tee. And Lexi plays most tournaments like she doesn't really sweat the rough.

You summed it up nicely. There's something about her super steep AoA that irks me. It's hard to root for someone who swings in a way you feel is somewhat wrong, isn't it?

Personally I pull for her. I like her swing because it is unorthodox but it is violent. I hope it does not cause her back problems later on in life. She seems like a nice young lady and nothing like Stacy Lewis who I do not like period.

Did anyone notice that hideous putter she is using? That is one huge ugly thing and the last 2 days she has not putted worth a hoot with it. I was actually pulling for her to do a Rory toss with it into that lake on 18 yesterday. It is one thing to putt bad with a good looking putter but to putt bad with a hideous putter well. I have close to 100 putters and I would give her any of them with the exception of 3 of them if she would toss that ugly putter in a lake somewhere.
