Most of the greens where I played today are heavily trapped in front.  I did not have many choices.  But yes, the Open run-up shot would be the best, if possible.  Eh, the chipping game from behind the green got a nice workout today...

I keep a short ice pick in the cart this time of year to make holes in the frozen ground. And yes, don't land a ball on the green or it is just like hitting it in the street. Good chance to practice your chip and run ups.

I feel your pain, some of the greens here are like that as well. Sometimes a strategic layup between the bunkers is the best play, I speak from experience. It is a laugh and beats not playing.

I applaud you guys that get out there with ice picks, hammers and ski masks to play this

great game in freezing conditions. I only play when I can wear shorts................

You guys are blowing my mind talking about playing Golf on frozen ground. Here the courses are closed even with frost. Here if you walk on frost covered ground it will break the grass and leave brown spots. You guys must have different grasses or something

You know what, this is really insightful.  I'm one of the rare players who tends to underestimate how far I hit my irons if only because I'm constantly trying to keep all the parts in sync.  But there is no point in doing that if your normal shot will just bound over the green.  I'll have to try this.

We encounter the problem frequently this time of year especially at the start. If the sun is shining, the surface of the green may soften up allowing a more aggressive shot. The green remains frozen except for the surface, try using your divot tool.

 

We tend to start play at 11:00-11:30 to take advantage of the warmest part of the day. Today, is the same with a high of 5C and moderate winds. Likely 3C to start. We walk which keeps you warm, it is a lot of fun.

 

And Stu, the grass variety is quite different here and is well suited to the climate.

Yeah, you and me both. I did find this that explains it but reading this is like trying to understand the mining of crypto currency. Woosh, right over my head. I did find a video on how to make it that is very clever and even I can understand it.

Played the Lake Course at RTJ Grand National today. Cloudy with a little misty rain but CPO

on only 2 holes. Warmed up to 68 degrees.

Thanks. I actually managed to avoid the trouble areas and thus any blow ups but my game 

was off just enough that I made a lot of sloppy bogies; either failing to get up and down on

missed greens or 3 putting the long distance putts. Easy to do, for me. Par 72. I went 44-42

for an 86. Had 1 double on each side. 

 

The PGA Tour played this course for a few years as the Barbasol Championship, opposite the

British Open, until the event was moved to a permanent home in Kentucky. It's too hot here in

July for a PGA Tour event. They go north as the temps go up.
