GG really gives out a lot of wisdom. Watching his videos are so helpful although you have to dig a little to find what you want since it's not a personalized video of course. I'm not a member but probably should be. His stuff is gold! Last couple of days I had a breakthrough really learning how to use my lower body to drive the swing and everything is going so much further. Pretty much gained like 25 yards it was crazy. My normal shot is now my old max distance. Have to be careful not to forget the release or else I sky some low spin flyers that go way too far like a 145 yard 52. Still gotta work on my driver as that's gone up but not as much. Rhythm feels much better now too, like everything just falls into place.

BTW one main that I realized is that after understanding the positions, I still had to hit the ball. And by hitting it I mean maximizing the momentum at and after the ball. I was getting so bogged down by the positions, squatting etc that I wasn't really swinging the club anymore. Like the energy wasn't a kinetic chain. I still got a long way to go of course, but it sure feels a lot better!

I had been striking the ball really well for a few months but fell into some bad habits lately not playing much due to weather, got narrow and steep in transition with driver, and hit some foul balls.

I sent GG a text, he left me a voicemail, and we're getting it cleaned up. I was pushing off too much/early with my trail leg and getting narrow/steep.

"If you don't lose your arm structure, don't push off your trail leg, and there's more rotation in transition, the shaft will shallow. If I see any push off with trail leg, you really have to work the R arm external, and I don't want to do that. So sit into your right side, with no push off, and I guarantee that shaft will shallow out in transition."

Did an online lesson with GG this week. Gave me several things to work on. The biggest issue is that I have never had my right arm/shoulder external on the downswing - I always crank open quickly in transition and my right elbow flares out. Been working on addressing this a bit this week. I had no idea how folks were getting to the exaggerated P6 position where he puts the alignment stick 45 degrees of the right foot. After a lot of searching this week for how to move my body like that, and how to even remotely get that feel in a swing, I think I'm improving.

Here's a vid with rehearsal showing the above mentioned exaggerated P6 and a swing.

And here's last fall vs tonight comparison. Granted, I'm only working on 1/2 - 3/4 swings because I'm in my basement, but so far so good.

Honest question for the GG crew. I look at GG's instagram all the time. He clearly has some awesome ideas about the swing, about practice and playing, and generally seems like a pretty good dude. With that said, I want to hear some honest thoughts on this:

Look back at that kid's instagram. He had an awesome swing before, and now is clearly going with the Johnny Ruiz/Matt Wolf/GG prototype model. Those guys are all really good golfers, but I really do wonder if this move is appropriate for EVERYONE. Really - why would you take that kid that had a completely awesome swing and make him swing it essentially more like Jim Furyk? Is shallowing the club 45 degrees really THAT important?

Just starting to wonder whether this is getting a little overdone with the steep to shallow move.

As per gg comment, it's an exaggeration.

But Ruiz, Wolf, and GG himself all actually do swing like that. And it certainly seems to be a theme in the swings he teaches. I guess what I'm asking is whether there is a "why" other than it looks cool in slow motion. Couldn't you achieve the same results with a less severe looping action?

Don't get me wrong - I'd go take a lesson from him if he was anywhere near me. Just interested in understanding why it's so important to make this move that he has everyone do it. I think it's fair to say it's non-traditional. You can certainly find examples of people who swing like that, but I would venture to say the substantial majority of pro players don't do an exaggerated across the line move and yet nearly all of them shallow in transition to some degree.

He doesn't force people to do that. He simply says shaft pointed a little inside ball line at p3 is his preference, but he doesn't care if you're crossed up, square, or laid off at the top. Since golf is very often a thing of opposites (ex, many high cappers swing inside then over the top). He says being more vertical, or even having the right arm internal on the backswing, makes the shaft flatten naturally along with the right arm going externally rotated on downswing.

He also said he thinks the fastest way to make a change is to exaggerate. Do exaggerations mixed in with half swings, etc, and the new moves you're working on will work their way into your base swing. At this point, I have no desire to get all crossed up at the top - any attempt to do so, at least right now, feels completely insane. Then again, my base swing has always sucked, so perhaps I ought to try it out.

Where should your weight pressure be from the top of the backswing to the pivot? I'm new to it and not sure where my weight should be on the squat. Right knee? Right glute? Left knee?

I'm sure GG says in a few of his videos that the weight will be 50/50 at P6 or even 60/40 favouring left side, but for sliders and a lot of people it will feel further back than normal, and the key really being that the pelvis is level & right knee external at P6. if that pelvis gets tilting you'll get dumped under the plane

I don't think anyone on here would argue that any particular move is the best for EVERYONE. He talks about why he likes the steep to shallow move, it gets you more speed. Different teachers teach different stuff, he seems to strongly believe in this and his students get results, so what more can he do?

I am really liking GG and his views on the setup and pivot! I tried to implement his pingman setup and leg work (by doing the "drop the bucket" drill) and really feel like I gained both balance and speed! It feels as though I have more freedom to whip through impact without a fear of going left.
