If I learned anything from the last few years it was this.

The guys that cared and actually knew what needed to be done were all in Texas.

True story. That's corporate for you.

Corporate is slashing your prices by 60% and then hours later telling everyone that they are leaving golf. That's not the way to go out.

Ummm ok, so Tiger's brand will sell more clubs EXCEPT for the folks who buy clubs for a lot of different reasons. Yes, very linear logic there.

Name one pro who has more influence on who buys what clubs.

None of them influence hard good sales

Putters maybe - nothing else

There's an army of kids wearing puma swinging cobras that want to have a word with you. Also there's a set of 2006 Nike Pro Combos that are sitting next to me that don't agree with your logic.

There are no kids swinging cobras - most of the puma crowd probably couldnt tell you what clubs he uses

Who played 2006 pro combos besides the 40 people who bought a set and you?

I ran a brick and mortar store for 6 years but you probably know best :)

And you probably know better than the club companies shelling out millions to put their equipment in their hands. Good call.

Serena swings a Wilson. Still wears Nike.

Was golf the only sport where they made equipment?

They make baseball gloves.

Do they still?

Under "Swingman" yes.

maybe they are transitioning out of RETAIL hardgoods

I could see them continuing to produce tour only equipment, while doing limited retail releases at inflated prices and higher margins. Especially since they already have the capabilities facilities, and pipelines to do so.

They can go PGX pricing, and circle T exclusivity.

Don't forget Nike is the absolute king of stirring up a frenzy over their releases.

And even if they do let their under contract players and new signees play other brands, they will be covered up with Nike headcovers, so I'm sure they don't see it as much of a loss

While me and you agree on things often. This one I do not. Problem is the people in Texas didn't put out product the masses liked. Wouldn't say it's all the folks in Oregons fault.

The oven is where the golf products were developed and tested. From beginning to store shelves. It didn't work. They just didn't produce what the masses wanted or what they'd be interested in. Therefore the oven died.

Anybody here think that this might lead to PXG offering much more affordable equipment? Seems brilliant to me. Come into the market, create a huge golf wide discussion on their product, and then sign some of these guys up and push a more affordable product. I have little doubt there would be a line out the door for any PXG equipment at the same price point as the other major companies. just a thought...

So they too could lose money?

Nike just told you it's not profitable to sell hard goods... that's NIKE who could buy Bob Parsons and have him mow Jordans lawn.

Anyone who wants to start a hard goods company isn't doing it to make money

first of all Nike said THEY have not been profitable. If you don't think that a more affordable line of PXG gear wouldn't do better than Nike golf clubs you're dense.

You think PXG has more brand recognition than the most recognizable logo in human history?

Really?

Tomorrow go in a golfsmith or like store and ask 5 people if they've ever HEARD of PXG

You might find 1... MIGHT

I don't think you understand how business works nor do you get that Bob Parsons has zero desire to be just like every other middling oem.

PXG has zero brand recognition and all a $700 set of PXG irons would do sitting in a golfsmith is collect the same amoutn of dust that hogans would, that nikes did, or that cobras do

You must think normal golf buyers are like the people on this forum... they aren't.

Too many pages to go back on so not sure this was posted but this is pretty interesting.

http://www.newstalk....ga-championship

Former PGA Championship winner Rich Beem believes Rory McIlroy needs to not only have fun putting again in a bid to reignite that part of his game - but if possible amid "contractual obligations", perhaps try out new putters.

The 2002 major winner, who is now a golf commentator and analyst with Sky Sports made the cut at the weekend at Baltusrol as his compatriot Jimmy Walker went on to win the tournament.

McIlroy, who is contracted to Nike, on the other hand, missed the cut at the weekend.

"He's got to change something and I think he's got to go back... try and think about how he putted when he was a kid and don't always think about the mechanical part of it, think about the feel, think about the touch, have fun putting again because he gets over it and he just doesn't look comfortable or confident," said Beem, before sharing the story of bumping into McIlroy last week.

"I did see something. His locker was right across from mine during the week and he came in on one of the days. He'd just gotten a brand new Scotty Cameron putter which looked exactly like the one he won with at the US Open in Congressional and I said 'can I see it?' I said 'man, that thing is pretty' and he goes 'yeah, isn't it?'

"I could see this gleam in his eye, like he really wanted to take it out and hit it on the putting green and yet I don't think he did because of contractual obligations. But you kind of feel bad for the guy that's locked in to a contract with a manufacturer. It doesn't feel like he can go out and really play with a golf club that he really wants to play with - even looking at a different putter for a change can certainly change your attitude, thinking and feel. Something's got to give because he is too good of a ball-striker from tee to green to go out there and struggle so mightily on those greens."

No release of any of the new black and orange clubs or new pc's this fall either. Someone should share with us what they looked like and the technology who saw it at the Oven so we can have nightmares in our nightmares of what could have been..

Nike should release the PCs as one final edition. It will sell out in minutes. But they probably don't give a crap anymore. Here is to what could have been THE sickest iron I've ever seen in my life.

Hasn't Tiger been playing Miura blades disguised as Nikes? I know he has in the past so maybe he'll go with a mixed bag. Miura irons/wedges, Cameron putter and whatever woods suit his eye. Titleist ball. Keep Nike apparel and he's got a separate bag deal. Doesn't need a club deal. But would be cool to see him go back to where he started with all Titleist.

I think there is a little misunderstanding here. These companies aren't losing money with golf equipment. We just live in a stock market economy that doesn't allow for corporations to grow at "only 4%" per year like Nike golf equipment was.

It really makes no sense at all if you think about it. It's making money, consistent money, but because it's not increasing enough each year, it's considered a failure. But having something like golf club sales increase every year is just a fantasy that will never happen.

You can make money, but unless the number of players grow each year, it's ridiculous to think that you can continue to gain in profits each year. It's just as ridiculous to think that each Taylormade driver will increase your drives by 10-15 yards.

But this is the stock market economy that we live in now. Corporations get penalized if they don't continually grow, cut costs, and squeeze out every dime possible. This is a great example of the problem. It will continue to happen as long as we look at the stock market and use it to judge how well our economy is going.

I bought some Nike golf shoes once, man they were garbage.

And thats an insult to garbage.

That was my first and last impression of Nike golf.

Just garbage.

The clubs looked like they were made of that plastic metal that they made the buttons you change the stations on in the cheap stereos in like a 79 Dodge Dart.

I think I will buy some of those red shirts and stockpile them. Prolly sell them on ebay in like 30 years.

Your strange haikus grinding an axe against Nike come off like a poetic jilted ex-girlfriend.

And I've never owned a Nike golf club.

How did it work for Nike with hard goods?

Oh that's right... the 2 most popular golfers on the planet couldn't help them sell clubs enough to be profitable

They were profitable and growing when Tiger was a stud. Can't grow without him no matter what. I think they also aimed their equipment at too low an age group. Crazy colors not many people above age 40 like. Tried to connect that scheme to their main clothing scheme, but it's too extreme for most golfers. Golfers play mostly bland clubs. Sadly, Nike turns off too many people too (for mostly stupid reasons). Also think Nike might have skimped on the R&D recently. But it's hard to put a ton of money in (and we know Nike could) knowing that the return on investment most likely won't be there.
