Tiger designing new taylormade irons

Recommended Posts

I wouldn't be surprised if some of the talent from The Oven ended up at TM. Tiger's irons have always been a custom grind.

I think Tiger just made a position for MT.... lol

Designing new irons ? Yea like the ones he and Rory designed and stopped playing once the money dried up . Tiger isn't " designing " anything. He will hit one and say yay or nay. And what is sold at retail will be a facsimile of a facsimile of what he ends up playing.

Marketing 101!

MadMen was ahead of its time.

Tiger really just needs to do what Boris Becker did in Tennis. Becker bought the mold and rights to his racket design from Puma. He then shopped that mold to company Head, Estusa, etc. and let them private label it however they wanted to.

To say that he's designing irons is a joke.

Who's to say that he didn't…

It's a shame these hyper wealthy two (Rory and Tiger) didn't sign with the likes of Bridgestone or Mizuno for their iron choices and probably took the most money on offer. Clearly tiger having to design his own irons suggests tm had nothing he liked and same goes for Rory. Callaway and TM don't need the help but the smaller companies do. How much $$$ is enough? Selfish is what it is

I wonder about that, Not sure if its selfish per say, but "the best" expecting the best.

Granted many companies design great stuff, but if a company has the backing and the ability with the financial means to be able custom design and build a club to X players specification. Why not.

Only a fool would turn down an offer like that. there is a difference with being selfish, reasonable, and realistic. This is the former #1 in the world chasing a title that hasnt been broken, I think it would be in his best interest to get every opportunity, i.e. a company willing to pay for him and a total custom build. Nike did that for him for a long time and that is likely one of the reasons he stayed with Nike along with having a hard time changing clubs as each iteration came out. THEY Custom built it exactly to his specs.......

Again I dont think its selfish, I think his accolades allow him to have these options presented to him.

My thoughts (and hopes) as well. MT is the best around

It would be incredibly interesting to see if Tiger goes MB or CB. I can envision an MP-5 style MB that offers some amount of forgiveness but still gives him that blade look.

He already said blades, and no reason not to. He has no issue finding the center of the face. Not sure he will ever play cavity backs

Wouldn't be the first Irons he's had a hand in designing so why do you say it's a joke?

I think his MB's are fine in the short irons, but something with a little extra juice in the 3-5 irons would help. He lays up a lot and hits longer approaches, especially in the majors. A split set would be solid IMO. He doesn't need to do it obviously, but it would be a good transition to embrace into this stage of his career.

This just shows how much influence he still has in the golf world. DJ and Day, 2 of the best players, play what TM offers will slight modifications, but Tiger makes them build a custom set.

Suprised tm did this...they already had superstars and didn't need him. Only way it's a good move is if he plays very good. Dustin is much better then him. The main issue is can he play with injuries and he has been away from winning for years.

Well obviously you're wrong. If they didn't need him they wouldn't have signed him.

People are in delusion about how huge Tiger is. He IS golf.

irons are always his strength, he will stick with mb I would imagine.

Exactly, irons are indeed his strength. Driving accuracy is/has been the issue, and I hope he only strives for top 30 in distance and backs off from DJ, Bubba, and Rory to save on his swing/back. Course management and smart golf looked to favor him in the Bahamas when he was playing solo and playing very well.

^^^^THIS!

People wonder why golf is where it is today and why tournament purse amounts are so high. Tiger grew the game and brought it from the elite, to the masses. People constantly question the state of the game and it's decline today, but it directly coincides with Tiger's presence in that game. I equate the golf world to the 1920s economy and it's collapse. Tiger was the roaring 20s and the decade to follow was a depression, much like the outlook of the GAME without him. He is modern golf cause he created it.

1). As TM has no real MB anymore in their program and TW is a blade man, I would speculate that we'll be seeing a MB set coming.

2). As TM is trying to cut R&D (to make their bookvalue more attractive) costs by extending product cycles, the coming MB's will be compatible with the present P770/750's.

3). As some staff players have dabbled with CB/MB combo sets in the past, this adds weight to my speculation.

Tiger doesn't need the money, but his ego (as everyones) drives him to new ventures which can confirm his being and basically keep him from hanging in a rut.

As his playing is not what it used to be (at the present) and after getting an invite from the PRESIDENT to build a course, what else can he do? This marrige is probably the biggest thing to happen to the golf industry in a long time, and we are going to profit from it.

At the risk of posting something golf club related......

I think what we're going to see is a true set of MB's, Taylormade have several CB models out right now, they've not produced a true muscle since the Tour Preferred line about 3 years ago. Tiger has always played MB's right down, apart from his 2 iron (may have experimented with CB 3 iron at times).

I think this is a great collaboration for both parties. With Tiger on board, Taylormade may end up producing a great set of MB's that the public will buy into. I'm sure they'd love to be mentioned in the same sentence as the likes of Titleist and Mizuno when talking about quality forged muscle backs. I know a lot of people siad they thought Nike clubs were somewhat inferior but you don't hear many complaints about their forged MB's. The original blades, the VR pro's even the Vapor pro's all went down pretty well. It will be interesting to see whether or not many other TM staffers are keen to put a true MB back in play.

I think we'll see tiger with a combination of the following

2 or 3 iron in the UDI (when not using a 5 wood)

(3?)4 - PW in the new MB

56, 60 in some form of custom grind wedge offering.

Good bit of business for Taylormade, Tiger gets to hit woods he likes and design a new set of irons, 13 time Major champ putter stays in the bag :)

Taylormade likely already has a new blade in the works. The tour preferred MBs are what 3 years old now? They'll make a set with Tiger's preferred shape, maybe forge them at Miura, and put the new badging on them. Then everyone will say Tiger is hitting the new Taylormade MB when really it's nothing like the retail version. Or perhaps release a special limited edition set of TW specs and sell them for $2500.
