Taylormade Spider Tour Putters

I was playing a Bettinardi Tour BB8 with a sound slot. I wasn't having any problems putting. I did one thing that changed all that. I tried the Spider at Dick's. I loved the first retail DJ putter I bought but sold it too my golf partner. I just received one that came from the vault that has the Itsy Bitsy on the sole with serial numbers. It does feel a little different but not as much as expected. Its does sit exactly square. The shaft on the first retail version I had sat about 3" to the left as opposed to this one. So your hands were more over the ball. A forward press picked up the back of both. The vault model may feel slightly harder. I cannot tell without having both at the same time. I would be happy with either version.

Hope you didn't pay vault price because that model isn't from the vault... the one's from the vault do not have a serial number. The one you have is from the pre-release in November of last year before the full retail came out with the Tour soleplates.

So the retail ones have no serial numbers and neither do the ones from the vault. The only ones with serial numbers according to you are the pre-release putters. That makes no sense at all. I have read that Adidas cannot find buyer for TaylorMade. That's probably because they make too may models of every club they produce, confusing everyone. This thread is a mess as it seems you need a road map to follow the different things on one putter that they made into four.

Nope I'm saying all retail models have a serial number, the ones from the vault do not.

Received my Tour Black today. Love the feel of the insert. Mine sets up square not open. Hate the small grip, doesn't feel bad just small. Have a SS 3.0 coming Friday. Any feed back on the black shaft and bag wear? Curious how it will look next year. Really disappointed the head-cover was Velcro fasten. It should have been magnetic.

Yeah a magnetic closure would have been nice. I will say though, the headcover cleans up nicely. Had some mud on mine from my wedges and it just wiped right off.

The biggest difference other than color and insert is that the J Day sits square. The DJ has more loft bc it's suited to a forward press like DJ. The J Day shaft points straight up when soled while the DJ shaft points slightly back

you are 100% WRONG!!! both are 3.5* loft, 38* toe hang.. , and like i said, i just saw 2 at my club, the red sat square, the black open..

Umm what i said didn't contradict you. My DJ sits open a degree or two but the slant neck makes the shaft point slightly back. The only way to get the DJ to have a square face is to press the hands forward. Chill out buddy

unless I am reading what you are saying wrong, yes you are contradicting. what you said was there IS a difference in specs between the dj and jd, and i'm saying NO there is not, they are both the same specs. nothing about the dj being made special for his forward press is accurate.

Soled flat. Sits square shaft leaning back.

Shaft vertical face sits open

This was the case with 4 DJs 34 and 35 inch. The J Days all sat square when the shaft was vertical.

When soled both sit square, but the angle of the slant neck was different. This is not surprising considering TM poor quality control...and I'm not a TM hater. I have an M1 and M2 driver both were 1.5-2* off spec on loft. I have 2 r15 rescues, both were 1* off spec on loft. Hopefully these pics clarify the point that i didn't clearly explain.

I just got the black dj model. Sits absolutely square as square can be on its own without a fwd press. Some of the others in the store did look open both the red and black. Seems like luck of the draw more than a purposely done.

My store must have only gotten bad batches as i was that guy who asked to see all of their DJs in 34 and 35

I'm a neurotic ex caddy so i wipe and use a stiff nylon bristle brush so there's never mud on my clubs. I use an electric toothbrush to clean the grooves after reach round.

Still can't believe that's a midsize grip. Hate that the "oversized" is so heavy. The weight/swing weight of the DJ is perfect for me.

Mine arrived today and couldn't be happier. Sets up great and feels very resistant to twisting in the stroke. Really like the stock grip as well, tacky and feels good in the hands.

by your pic,, that looks to sit slightly open??

Haha. That looks square to slightly closed to me. I think we all see face angle different.

Ok so I've been messing around with mine since I needed less loft and I can confirm what is causing the issue of the "open face versions" of the putter.

I bent the hosel back so I could play it with 1.5 degrees of loft. This naturally points the shaft backwards (from being perpendicular to the sole). When it is like this, and you just lay the putter down with the shaft straight up and down (as if you thought it was perpendicular to the sole), the face will open.

However, if the shaft is actually perpendicular to the sole, the club face will sit square when it rests.

So if you "open face" guys want to fix the issue, you can bend the hosel so the shaft is perpendicular to the sole. This will, of course, increase the loft, but do note these have a high loft for a mallet anyway. That's why I prefer mine bent lower (I actually get the shaft and face parallel or close to it).

With the shaft bent backwards, I still have no issues with the putter when going through my normal routine, but if you do lazily lay the putter down, it will swing open.

Every company has issues with quality control when it comes to flow neck putters. I've bought probably 30 of them and it's rare to get one that is setup perfectly from the get go (I've even had ones made for me and they didn't get to me correct). These hosels bend so easily that every one of them could leave the factory straight, but they can end up bent by the time you get it. Never slam or kick a flow neck putter either as you'll likely bend it. It's great they can have the loft changed so easily with a flow neck, but you have to be careful because of it.

I have a take on the open/square debate. My ball position when i putt is front of centre, that's how it feels and looks to my eye anyway.

I find that if i set up to a middle stance with the spider i would have to manipulate the head square.

My other putter is a golo 3 and if i centre the ball with that putter my hands square the head automatically as you can see with the shaft lean.

To my feeling the spider head is more resistant to this adjustment. It doesn't matter to me but interested to hear others thoughts.

Pictures don't line up...Bottom left is centre and top right is centre.

I pulled the trigger. It does sit slightly open, but I will know how this $300 experiment works with my 1st round tomorrow. I did immediately take the winn grip off and put a flatso 2.0 like I have on my other putters and it made a world of distance both is distance control and confidence.

Again, just wished they made a pure black flatso...

Open / square / close aside, anyone go from the DJ model to the Day.

Liking my DJ so far but wondering if the red Day model is better visually to line up putts vs the all black model. Maybe that's the reason most pros are using the red.

Anyone with thoughts?

I have both. No difference for me with alignment.

Still looking for a bit heavier weights for them. Would like 12 or 14 I think

They currently have a selection of three weights only and they are $30.00 per set of two weights. 6, 10, and 14 grams. I cannot find any other weight other than what is listed. Plus $6.99 shipping.
