Rants and Raves...

Recommended Posts

I don't know if this should be in Random Topics or this. Let's go with this. It's going to be a rant.

I'm in Austin Texas, but it's not about Austin or Texas. I've got no beef with either. But, I do have a beef with expensive hotels that think they're so darn good that they can charge $34 for two eggs and bacon, but are really clueless when it comes to thinking about the CUSTOMER!

Does management not have eyes? Do they not have ears? Have they never stayed at their own hotel to see how dumb some things are?

Ok, I admit that these may seem like little things, but if they're so little, why don't people think about them?

1. What's with no shoe horns? You know, some of us have bad backs and having a shoe horn makes our lives so much easier.

2. What's with sinks so far away from the edge of the counter that you can't bend over enough to be over the sink? All the water and shaving stuff coming off your face is deposited on the counter then dripping onto the floor. What the hell?

3. What the hell? Why is there no place to hang a towel for when you step out of the shower? Has no one ever looked around?

4. Why is the tissue you take from the box to blow your nose have to be the last one and no other box around? For heaven's sake...

5. No refrigerator I can use in a $250+/night room?

6. So, I'm in the so-called restaurant to have breakfast. Why do the waiters have to be hipsters telling me their life story and how glorious certain breakfasts are on the menu. It's eggs and stuff. It's not "glorious."

OK, that's not a big deal. It's early morning and I like to get emails and stuff out of the way. A little peace and quiet in the morning isn't too much to ask. The gaggle of hipster waiters are practically yelling over each other with stories of beard growing, pimples, blah, blah, blah, about 10 feet away and can be heard out the door, through the lobby and down the street.

Shut up! Leave us customers in peace. I couldn't take it any more and politely ask them to shut the hell up or go in the kitchen. They sound like a bunch of old ladies gossiping. My apologies to old, gossiping ladies.

And stop picking at the pimples on your face! What the hell is wrong with you people?

7. It'd be really nice if the heater worked better since the room is frosty. Maybe the room itself is supposed to be the refrigerator?

8. Why can't hotels have showers with a hand-held shower head? It's almost 2019. Why is the water handle so far into the shower that you have to be standing under the shower head when the ice cold water starts pouring over your head? Idiots.

9. I'm sure I'll find more, but that's enough for now.

10. Merry Christmas?

Sorry about your experience, bet you that you will not be staying at the same Hotel on your next visit ?

I would give the management and the owner a long review of why their service did not meet my expectations. Especially at that rate which is reasonable to have the minimum expectation for comfort and convenience.

BTW, call me if you're in our town and we will be happy to supply you with eggs and bacon ( organic or natural label ) at half the price , with the hash thrown in. Coffee will be extra, now, don't complain.

learned years ago to avoid meals at the venue where you sleep.

it's not much more than a money magnet.

there's usually many decent restaurants within blocks that will provide better value.

ask around or google search.

hotels and airlines (present day) are not service providers in the sense most of us remember.

Putter grips....

I have been searching for old school putter grips not these stupid 2-thumb or Superstroke jobs but a simple, slim, pistol putter grip.

No problem,I hear you say BUT they just ain't like they used to be,instead of being a smooth one-piece moulding they all seem to now have a cap on the butt end with a pronounced seam which is bloody irritating and NO I'm not changing my method!

Why don't they leave things alone? Why don't they make Royal putter grips as they used to?

Go with the Golf Pride "Tour Traditional" It looks like the paddle but its really a pistol. https://www.golfwork...grips/p/gp0039/

Correction...not really a pistol shape. If you want the pistol shape, you have to go with the "players wrap" but its smooth on the front and sides. They only have the phone wrap shape on the back...its a bit funky to get used to at first but its the closest thing they make to the old "pro only" grip.

Are any of you guys following the crazy thread about Matt Kuchar supposedly stiffing his caddy? Why in the hell do those clowns over there worry about this stuff? It seems to me that Kuch and his caddy had an agreement and it was fulfilled on both sides, so who cares? The longer that thread goes on, the more danger they put the local caddy in because the locals who are up to no good, are going to start thinking the guy has $100K plus in his pocket and slit his throat to get it. Does that ever occur to anyone??? And what business is it of Tom Gillis???

If I'm Kuchar, I release a one word press release: "Nunya'"

Kuchar seems like a good guy, I am sure he paid the caddie the agreed amount whatever that was, which is no ones business. Some people just have to hate.

Whenever I've checked that box a watermark still appears.

ALWAYS check the watermark box off FIRST before you do anything else.

Cheers, I'll give it a try next time I post a picture.

I've put regular round grips on a couple putters. I believe special putter grips are a recent (1980's) thing.

The weather was cold and so was the putter...

Unbelievably cold here for South Florida. It was 42 degrees at 7:48am when I teed off this morning.

We moved here from Wisconsin over 9 years ago so playing golf in the cold is nothing new, but it's been awhile. I was dressed appropriatly and in layers, although I didn't come out of any of them.

Played the Snake Eyes S&W set and was hitting the ball well. I should have shot something in the very low 80's but not only was I cold, the putter was stone cold. I burned both edges of the cup. I left it one inch long, and one inch short. I played ring around the rosy. I said some bad words under my breath. I would have soundly thrashed the 2 gentlemen I was playing with if I could have just dropped a few putts. As it was I hung with them but they were shaking their heads too as my birdie putt at 18 rolled right to the lip... and stopped.

All Forged, all the time.

It won't even reach 42 degrees here today - so, I truly pity the terrible conditions you played in.

Looks like y'all are getting what we had a couple days ago. It's 15*F here currently, but two days ago about this time of morning, it was -6*F.

Maybe not for everyone, but I've been happy with it.

Here is a Royal putter grip that is still available.

https://www.golfwork...-grip/p/rg0018/

Some good choices here. I've used a number of the Karma Velour Paddle version on thrift store putters. Similar to the Lamkin Crossline but a lot less expensive.

https://www.hirekogo...order=price&p=1

Nothing wrong with going with a round grip. As far as I know, the last standard length pro shop putters offered with a round grip were the very first Ram Zebra putters in the 1970s. A very thin leather wrap. I don't know how long dedicated putter grips have been available, but they were around in the early 1960s for sure. I recall round grip putters were common in starter sets during the 1970s.

I have never bought the idea that an extra large grip did anything to calm the hands or help with the yips. I tried a few of them and ginched putts as bad with those as with anything else. If they help some folks that's great, but I believe it's a placebo effect as much as anything.

Just my opinion, but if the powers that be really wanted to help beginning golfers (and for that matter many more experienced players as well), they would relax the rules on what is allowable for full swing grips. As long as I have been playing, I know I struggle with my grip on occasion, and truth is there are many times a slump begins with a grip issue and most of the time we don't even realize it. It doesn't take much, and is particularly an issue today as due to the fact that there are no standards for how a shaft tapers it is quite possible to end up with a bag of clubs where the grip size, particularly under the trail hand, varies quite a bit due to having several different graphite shafts in the woods and hybrids, and another shaft altogether in the irons and wedges. It wasn't an issue when everything in the bag was True Temper Dynamic S.

If more grips with flat sides and other shapes were permitted, I believe more players would have more success. I keep a couple of old clubs with pronounced reminders under leather grips just to use as a checkpoint for when my grip starts to feel a little off. Of course those grips conformed to the rules at one time, but no longer do because of the "infinite wisdom" (sarcasm, and not just for grips) of the USGA's Frank Thomas, who was instrumental in the ban of grips such as the Wilson Reminder Grip that was sold for so many years and to this day can be found on literally millions of old clubs. For some reason ol' Frank had a problem with the Lamkin Silhouette grip of the early 80s with its waist at the top end and its bulge under the trail hand and that's what led to the ban. If you'll remember, this ban rendered the old Golf Pride paddle putter grip that was on so many Bullseye putters non-conforming because it had a tiny waist at the top. The amount of the reminder common down the back of many grips was reduced by this rule change to the point it's virtually negligible, at least to me. The grips on Ben Hogan's personal set would likely be non-conforming today.

The USGA should revisit these rules, which would have the twofold benefit of helping a lot of players and allowing some innovation by the equipment business. Of course there are many of us who would never use or have no need for such a product, but that shouldn't stop those who could benefit from having access to that sort of equipment.

"You think we play the same stuff you do?"

It's January. We live in the north latitudes. Going to be cold and snowy. Happens every year about this time. No sense complaining about it. However, played 9 holes last year in late February with 60* temps. So one never knows when the opportunity to reengage will present itself. I prefer to be optimistic that in a little over 30 days, I'll once again be able to play at golf out in the wild.

WTS. No way in hell am I going to subject myself to playing in temps below 40*. Find no enjoyment in the undertaking. That cold, might as well go ice fishing.

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

I’d like to rant about Craigslist ads for vintage clubs where the poster has not taken a picture of the back of an iron head. There’s 5 different shots of the full bag from different angles 10 feet away. One picture of the face of one of the irons, and the woods all have headcovers on. The description reads something like, “vintage golf clubs, spalding, hogan, MacGregor. Serious buyers only, will not break up set, don’t ask.”

I don’t get it. Take a picture of the back of the iron because it tells everything about it. It’s like selling a car and only showing the steering wheel. Sure some people can tell what kind of car it is from the steering wheel for some cars. Most can’t.

Even if you know NOTHING about golf, wouldn’t it make sense to post pictures of the parts of the club with words on them? And for woods; sole plate and crown, is it so hard?!?

I get that you might not post the shaft flex or the grip condition, fine. But can you please just show me what you have?

He/she will figure it out soon enough when the clubs don't sell. Maybe what you should be hoping for is an auction listing with the seller not taking anymore pictures and getting the lot at a steal?!

Especially when you're writing "Serious buyers only, will not break up set, don't ask." in your listing. What sort of serious buyer is going to take a punt on some clubs they can't even see?

I've seen sellers list a club with one picture, taken from a distance, and no information on shaft flex or maker, even though a shaft band is clearly visible :fool:
