US Open: Erin Hills

Rory just said it best when told they were cutting back the rough in the media room: "I just don't get it... We have 60 yards. If you can't hit it in that avenue, you might as well go home."

Coincidentally, #10 fairway at Augusta is also 60 yards wide. And Rory was 70 yards left of that in someone's backyard. He didn't go home, he just limped in.

Yeah, he should keep his trap shut.

Rory is (refreshingly) open and honest in pretty much every media interaction, much to the glee of the trolls on WRX

I'm sure he will give a candid presser on moving day.

They are cutting the rough because of the complaints. Plain and simple. USGA and Mike Davis have been screwing up their championships so badly lately, they are in desperate need of a good event. Hence the reaction to the players complaints. USGA is so lost right now they don't know what to do, so they overreact.

Ridiculously tough courses don't make for a better tournament.

I was thinking a little about this. US opens that I remember as really good. One was when Campbell won at Pinehurst back in 2005. Crazy difficult greens, Campbell won with a par score. I remember 2005 as a really entertaining tournament. 2014, again at Pinehurst, when Kaymer won, was the most boring. Every hole felt like "long par four in the woods" where everyone aimed at the middle of the green. Must have been a remake in between, not for the better. But the best US Open I can remember was the 2013 at Merion. Where Rose won on a Over-par score. It had everything. Tough, tricky, with players really having to select the right shots, the tradition, with Rose taking the approach on 18 almost on top of that Hogan plaque, and a golf course that really followed the nature, and had great variation between holes. That's how US Open should be. In my humble opinion. Chambers Bay was not that bad, really, the venue and the layout of the holes. It was the brown broccoli greens that spoiled the party. If they fix the greens, why not an Open there again? It was spectacular apart from the greens.

Rory shoots 73 on Thursday.

Question is, is that better or worse than the field average?

+1 will be better than average on Thursday, IMO.

O/U the winning score at -5?

I'll take the Under at -4.

Spieth said yesterday after the fescue chop that the winning score will be around 10-11 under.

It looks like the wind is forecasted to be around 10-15MPH over the weekend. Wind is one of the bigger defenses of the course...in addition to Mike Davis.

this will be fun

Hale Irwin was on Sirius the other day and said not that much has changed over the years with the U.S.Open. Every player knows if you aren't playing great golf you're going to get the crap beat out of you.

So if the USGA played two of the 5s as 4s, that's now 2-3 under.

Or 278.

Sounds like a US Open to me.

Agree 10,000%. I'm probably over anticipating this event having played the course in US Open conditions with Sunday pin positions. The whole fescue drama was just that. You can probably go to any course and find a place where it will be near impossible to find a ball or you'll face some kind of amazing challenge. I can't imagine with that change that they'll cut the rough at all.

The design of the green complexes and bunkering is extremely demanding and while people will attribute it to the USGA, it's been there all along. The elevation changes on the course are also very present and if you're hitting up to a green, you better be doing it from a fairway unless you can use trajectory to stop the ball. If you miss a green, you better do it in the right place because getting up and down isn't going to be easy.

The overall length isn't going to be as big of a factor because of the speed of the course. But the speed will bring a lot of well placed bunkers into the mix. The variable of the wind is just intriguing.

Thankfully, we have enough bandwidth in the office that the door will probably be closed a lot starting tomorrow morning!

Why does the media feel the need to ask DJ, or anyone else for that matter, if he thinks Hideki can win?

Because Hideki comes from a long line of Samurai warriors - that's why. Next question.

 , if that were true Hideki would have already won and then the media could ask him if he thinks DJ can win again.

Well played, sir. Well played. I stand corrected.

Going to make a drinking game out of how many times DJ says "You know" during an interview. It's called 60 Second Alcohol Poisoning.

Rory has DJ beat in that regard.

Was about to post this. That stupid woman has asked every player that question.

I wish someone would answer "oh yeah he was a great player for the Yankees. Next question."
