Johnny laughs at 63

Thomas could have shot 59 and Miller would still have reacted the same. Face it, Johnny, you've been bumped.
Little early to be drinking that hard. Any records or scores this week are a joke.

#1 Dustin Johnson, #2 Rory McIlroy and #3 Jason Day all missed the cut. I guess they weren't in on the joke.

Doesn't make the course hard. Means they played awful. When you hit a driver as bad as Rory did those two days you shouldnt make the cut anywhere. Add in that Rory and Day don't even care about golf, they just want to be ripped.

I guess it is time for the top 3 to make the switch to Titleist. LOL.

Actually JM didn't use balata for 73 Oakmont....

The golfers of today are better athletes. They are in better physical condition. The fields are deeper. The world is much smaller with modern day air travel. It is truly a global game at the highest level. There are more better players that train more and are the fields are much deeper.

Loved the old days, but it is a new era. That doesn't diminish Millers accomplishment or Thomas's accomplishment today. Both are remarkable.

Today's golf course was nearly 1,000 yards longer than Oakmont in 1973. Not saying it as hard as Oakmont, but that is worth noting.

wrong. Not worth noting. JM used balata and persimmon. Has fairways 1/2 the width and faster firmer greens with rough around the greens. Try again.

It was 8 of the top 12 that mc. (Promise, last time I say that ; )

If this was bomb and wedge, it would be 5 of those guys on the leaderboard. Not Brian Harmon.

Cool article. But it says he switched to a101 compression after using a softer balata. Pretty sure that macgregor ball is a balata, just a higher compression. Probably switched from a 90 compression.

No, it didn't. Rained the night before the third round, rained Sunday night after the final round. The ball JM used was balata, just a firmer compression. As DL pointed out, probably went from 90 to 101. Those MacGregor balls were awful at any compression, although, to be fair, balata balls in general were awful.

What if . . . JT makes the eagle putt after driving the green. Shoots 62. Still no love?

Today's equipment makes it possible to carry 3 wood 290. That it's possible doesn't mean many people do it. JT did it from the tee and from the fairway in the same round to inside 10' both times. Maybe Miller's rounds was "better" in some sense, but the approach on 18 was something special. Good for JT. Hope he wins it. Will put some burnish on a very special round.

My cleek is sometimes peevish.

Comparing Thomas' 63 is like comparing Spieth's scoring at Augusta in 2015 to what Tiger did in '97. Yes, the aggregate scores were there, but Erin Hills and August in 2015 were significantly easier courses for the rest of the field than either Oakmont or Augusta in '97, which is supported by the scoring of the rest of the field.

While Miller boasts far too often and loudly about his 63, he is right that this round did not measure up to the one he posted at Oakmont.

FiveThirtyEight covered this a few years ago. Here is a nice graphical representation:

paine-datalab-masters-tables-1.png?quality=90&strip=info&w=575&ssl=1

I will bet that Thomas' round today probably isn't even one of the twenty greatest rounds ever played at a US Open.

I think the field is more talented today than ever. I'm a data nerd, trying to prove what the best Open round ever is a fool's errand.

Hasn't the cut qualification changed? That would have an effect on comparing 63 to the field.

60 yards wide.........All you need to know.......Unheard of in a US Open......JT is my favorite player, and a great round........Best ever, not even on the conversation. Hell, Stenson's 63 at the Open is far and away better than JT's......

I had a reversible leisure suit in HS - jacket would go inside out and 2 pairs of pants! Then a friend introduced me to the proprietor of a proper men's store when I was a junior. Been wearing quality suits ever since (though not for work on a daily basis the past three plus years!!!!!!). FYI, not retired, just don't have to wear suits!
