Just looked up ball speed numbers because I was curious. In 2007, only 4 guys were above 180 mph ball speed: Bubba, JB Holmes, Tiger, and Daly. In 2017, there were 14 guys above 180 mph ball speed. That's a 250% increase in 10 years. It's just going to keep getting deeper and deeper with more and more physically gifted guys coming into the game. There is a crazy amount of money on the line and better coaching/training than ever before. Massive new pool of talent to draw from in countries like China/India as well.

Pssst. It is the equipment....

Pssst, no its not.

To pretend that they aren't swinging measurably harder more often and across a wider portion of the field is to ignore the most obvious cause.

I thought this was a valspar thread? Lol. Jack ruining another thread I see.

Anyone who says there isn't more talent and depth is living in a dream world. More money and awareness and access means more gifted athletes. The top x golfers of today are better than the top x from 30 years ago; like many have said it has really always been this way. There are fewer dominant players now because people train from the age of 8 to be golfers, they opt out of playing other sports when they are large and muscular (like basketball, hockey or football) and play golf; there is simply much more competition. I dont think people making the equipment argument realize just how few people got the privilege of playing golf even 25 years ago let alone 40.

It's not unique to golf; there is progress in every sport the technology has certainly improved but it is one small piece of the entire puzzle. We are talking about dominating a golf course with distance and athleticism and size and training have contributed just as much as equipment.

I can't wait to watch tiger today I'm in the area and weather is supposed to be awesome.

If Tiger wins this week it is an incredible story, if Tiger wins a major again it's the greatest sports comeback/story of all time

5 months ago this guy was dead to competitive golf

5 months ago this guy had been dead to competitive golf for 3+ years! If his health holds up and he continues improving the way he has been, he'll end up hoisting a trophy again and it will have been a comeback that only Tiger Woods could pull off.

He still has a long way to go and more odds to beat before he recaptures any amount of dominance, but the fact he is back on the first page of leaderboard at this stage shows how good he is.

Ben Hogan on line one regarding comebacks...

Why can’t you guys just start another thread about all the Jack stuff. There are obviously plenty of you that care enough to write essay worthy remarks about the subject but this is the Valspar thread. We like to talk about the tournament and what’s going on in the tournament. There are other outlets for your detailed posts.

I don’t think Tiger wins this. I am pulling for him like crazy but feeling like Casey or Rose may pull it out. Also looking for Patrick Reed to start playing better. Tiger being in the second to last group will put pressure on all the leaders as they have to deal with his huge galleries and the distractions they cause. This should be fun.

Yes! Stay on topic people, I know it's hard cause the hater and ADD peeps wanna take away from GOAT talk. Let's make some predictions:

Tiger 69

Connors 73

Palmer 70

Rain maybe this PM, low wind, 60's. Record crowds I bet?

Hopefully some of you are headed out to the tournament today. Crowds should be off the hook if The last 2 days are any indication. I think this tournament has showcased Tiger fever more than any other so far this year. People lined 3-4 deep fairway to green on a Friday. They did not even want to move to let Finau hit his shot because they didn’t want to miss there chance to see Tiger....lol. I get it, you sit there all day waiting for Tiger and than have to move and than some guy just runs up and grabs your spot , crazy situation.

I would think knowledgeable golf fans would have no problem moving out of the way for another player to hit. It's difficult enough for these pros.

Tiger's radar data from the past 2 days

DX398VKVMAAwlS7.jpg

Oh man don't post that. Next thing you know we'll have a five page digression about how he's actually maxing out at 128 mph clubhead speed.

I started that thread so I won't get into it, though I'm not sure how a ball can carry 264 in the rough an back up 6 yards but I digress. 14 was playing straight into the wind yesterday and was cold this morning, ball speeds are good and he piped one 345 on 5 today, he's as long as he needs to be again and thats good to see.

FWIW you seemed, by far, the most reasonable one in the argument(?-if you can call it that). I'm not really sure what the fuss was about, so you used a noisier stat to back up the fact that an older guy with multiple back surgeries can still get it out there. Who cares? Your point still stood based on the data and I think everyone in the discussion would agree, Tiger hits the ball a long ways. A simple "that club head speed number is probably higher than actual but even still not so much that he becomes a short knocker or even average and ball speed confirms pretty elite" would have sufficed.

Anyone familiar with the area Innisbrook where this Copperhead place is? they showed one shot from the blimp where it looked like there were hundreds of cars randomly parked in a long strip of grass right next to the golf course. Right of way for power lines I would guess. I am wondering if those people are just watching for free through the fences? or if that is legit parking for the event, if it is the cars were parked not in an organized fashion. I have witnessed events like this in the past where some poor guys car was boxed in by a couple of inconsiderate parkers...

I am not going to make a prediction, but I would love to see Tiger in the final group tomorrow and see if he still has that final day killing instinct. I think if the conditions are worse he has a better chance of this happening.

From what I can see forecast says wind like yesterday; gusty ranging from 6 to 10 mph, but a chance of rain starting at about 2:00.... so maybe a couple of guys out earlier can post better than the latter groups? Does Hadwin start moving up the board? Nice to see Jimmy Walker back.

Sadly it's moron central for most of the Tiger gallery. While he brings people to the tournament their not necessarily what golf needs.

While Tiger most certainly adds to it, you can see it every tournament. Running to the ball, not moving back, standing far to close to players hitting shots from trees ( still waiting for someone to be seriously injured). Knowledgeable isn't a term that should be applied liberally to average golfers let alone fairweather fans. Liquor of course makes it even more interesting.
